The Good
The 2014 Touareg boasts a comfortable ride and a luxurious interior (emotional appeal). Its strong engine options provide ample power (emotional/practical), while the diesel option delivers respectable fuel economy (practical). While not known for stellar reliability, many find its sophisticated design and overall value proposition compelling (both).
The Bad
Potential weaknesses include higher maintenance costs compared to some competitors. Electrical issues, air suspension problems (if equipped), and potential for diesel engine (TDI) complications are things to watch out for. Pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended to assess the vehicle's condition, especially its maintenance history.

How Does the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg Compare to Other Wagon?
Compared to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Touareg provides a more refined driving experience, but the Grand Cherokee offers better off-road capability. The Lexus RX excels in reliability and luxury, while the Acura MDX provides a balanced package of features and reliability. The Touareg's price point is generally similar to its rivals in the used market.
Alternatives to consider include the Lexus RX for superior reliability, the Acura MDX for a balanced package, or the Jeep Grand Cherokee for off-road prowess. If reliability is a top priority, the Lexus or Acura are better choices. The Audi Q7, which shares a platform with the Touareg, offers a similar driving experience with potentially higher maintenance costs.

I've never written one of these before, but had toThis car brings me joy - pure, joy. It's thought of things I didn't even know possible and it doesn't do it in an overly luxurious / pompous way; though it certainly is luxurious, and in the most pragmatic way... I love its handling, styling, feeling of performance/safety/reliabilty...I had to write this - and I've never reviewed anything before in my life.

Better than a Swiss Army KnifeWe all know that a Swiss Army Knife does many things in an *okay* manner. Knife? There but not too sharp, not too strong. Scissors? Got ‘em. But don’t ask me to actually cut anything more than a very thin string. If I can use the tiny things at all. Saw? It’s there, but please, please don’t tell me it’s gonna help me cut through the tree across my bike path. That’s kind of what I expected in switching from a top-of the line GMC Sierra Pickup to a Touareg. I expected lots of compromise. Boy oh boy was I wrong. A year ago I switched careers away from a 25 year career in single family home building. I have had pickups since I was 20. I never imagined not owning a pickup. But my new career is all corporate - Vancouver appointments, urban parking lots, no hauling anything other than my MacBook. But I still have a 5500 lb travel trailer. My family goes skiing and hiking dozens of times a year. I live on a mountain where the road doesn’t get plowed near soon enough or often enough in winter. I have a utility trailer for my yard work and landscaping needs. What to buy? I like new vehicles, rarely buy used. Test drove a Telluride, Atlas. Nice vehicles, but not enough towing capability. Audi Q7 - very nice, but I have a Porsche Macan S, and I love Porsche interiors and VW interiors, but Audi interior design language doesn’t do it for me. Then my friend started telling me how he tows his big Airstream with a TDI VW Touareg. And how it’s his and his wife’s favourite vehicle ever. Then I read how they are manufactured in Europe, and share a bunch of design with the Cayenne. Then I looked. Last TDIs sold in Canada are a few years old because of dieselgate. Bummer. But then I started looking and found an impeccable black ‘14 TDI R-line Executive. Only 70,000 Kms. I drove it. It is amazing!!! No, it’s not my Macan, but in Sport mode, it belies it’s size. So I bought this beauty last August. It is by far the best skiing, forest road hiking, versatile vehicle I have ever owned. It even tows my big travel trailer with no sweat! Up and down hills, amazing! TDI has the turbo dialed just right so there is always power available and fuel economy is amazing if you want it to be. It’s the Swiss Army knife with no compromise. Also, the interior quality is very high for a non-luxury brand It’s so enjoyable to drive day in and out, does so many things so well, that I am selling my Macan, and can now go for a less practical small sporty car like a Golf R for our second vehicle. The only reason I gave 4/5 for reliability is because I had the Check Engine light come on for the Diesel Particulate Filter, and has to take it in. This is under warranty for pretty much forever though, as all VW diesel emissions systems have been reconditioned due to dieselgate. Everything else is running perfectly, especially for a 7 year old vehicle.

Incredible car, solid, safe built like a tank! This car has plenty of room, I'm 5'9" and it's more suited for 5'10" and up. Towing capacity is amazing! 7700 lbs. Panoramic sunroof, power everything, A/C, sound system, leather, etc.

Toughest Truck/Crazy Fun Sportscar in OneI’m a truck guy all my driving life, particularly diesel. Still own an ‘86 Chevy 6.2L “Detroit†diesel going 300K mi strong. Have owned every domestic (USA) make/model truck and even Toyota & Nissan, but finally gave up on a Domestic modest sized diesel vehicle. VW diesel technology has always impressed, so in 2011 I finally took the plunge on a 2011 Touareg TDI Sport. Drove it 90K mi and traded it in for a 2014 R Line TDI Sport before moving across the country. I’ve never owned such a beast of a truck that was so much fun—and drove like a sportscar. I’ve got 118K mi on my ‘14, and while I’m working out some bugs caused by “the fix,†I’ll drive ‘er until it makes no sense to anymore, as hands down—it’s the toughest beast of a truck that is so much fun to drive. Makes the NY-TX run —-a breeze.

Best vehicle I ever ownedThis is a vehicle you drive and take the long way home as it is so much fun driving it. It is fast of the line, and smooth as can be. We love the drive and how easy it is to turn around with its tight turns. AMAZING.

Great PerformanceI have a TDI lux model and love the performance. This is a very tight suv and is very responsive. Excellent fuel mileage! Easy to handle and impressive in snow!
