The 2020 Volvo V90 is a luxurious wagon embodying Scandinavian design and practicality. Volvo has a long history of producing safe and stylish vehicles. The V90, offered as a wagon, provides ample cargo space and a comfortable ride. Key trims include the Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. New pricing ranged from approximately $51,000 to $61,000. The V90 stands out for its elegant interior, comfortable seating, and focus on safety. It's popular among buyers who value a blend of luxury, utility, and distinctive styling.
The Good

The 2020 Volvo V90 offers a compelling blend of advantages. For practical buyers, it boasts impressive cargo capacity, a comfortable ride, and a reputation for safety. Emotionally, the V90 entices with its elegant Scandinavian design, luxurious interior, and smooth performance. While not a sports car, it provides ample power for daily driving. Its fuel efficiency is also respectable for its size, and its value proposition resides in its refined experience.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2020 Volvo V90 include the infotainment system, which some users find complex or slow to respond. The rear visibility can be challenging due to the car's design. While generally reliable, some owners have reported minor electrical issues. Also, the T6 engine's fuel economy may not always meet expectations in real-world driving conditions. Be mindful of the car's depreciation, which can be significant.

What Problems Does the 2020 Volvo V90 Have?

The 2020 Volvo V90, while generally reliable, has experienced some frequently reported problems. Common issues revolve around the infotainment system, with reports of slow response times, software glitches, and connectivity problems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some owners have also mentioned issues with the climate control system and its sensors.
Recalls for the 2020 V90 have addressed issues such as potential problems with the fuel pump, which could lead to engine stalling, and issues with the automatic emergency braking system. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA to verify if any recalls apply and if they have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the complexity of the car's electronics. Over time, the sophisticated systems could be prone to failures, potentially leading to higher repair costs. The air suspension, available on some models, is another area to monitor for potential issues as the car ages. Early model years of the V90 (2017-2019) had some similar issues, so checking service records and prior repairs is advisable when considering a used 2020 model. Preventative maintenance, especially regarding software updates and system checks, is crucial for mitigating potential problems.

How long will the 2020 Volvo V90 last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2020 Volvo V90 can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. Volvo has a reputation for building durable engines and chassis. However, the long-term durability hinges on adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, including timely oil changes, fluid replacements, and software updates. Potential weaknesses over time include the aforementioned electronic systems, air suspension components (if equipped), and the turbocharger, which may require attention after several years. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into more costly repairs. Rust is generally not a major concern due to Volvo's corrosion protection.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Volvo V90 is equipped with a comprehensive suite of technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The centerpiece is the 9-inch Sensus Connect touchscreen infotainment system, which integrates navigation, audio controls, climate settings, and vehicle information. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Standard driver-assistance features include lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Optional features include Pilot Assist, Volvo's semi-autonomous driving system, which can assist with steering, acceleration, and braking on well-marked roads. A 360-degree surround-view camera is also available for enhanced maneuverability.
For entertainment, a premium Harman Kardon sound system is standard on the R-Design and Inscription trims, while a Bowers & Wilkins system is optional on the Inscription. Safety is a key strength of Volvo, and the V90 reflects this. It earned excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS. The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick+" designation. Standard safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, and whiplash protection system.

2020 Volvo V90 Prices and Market Value

The 2020 Volvo V90 had a starting MSRP of around $51,000, with higher trims reaching upwards of $61,000. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $30,000 to $45,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The V90 experiences moderate depreciation, which is typical for luxury vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, service history, and optional equipment. Models with desirable options like the Bowers & Wilkins sound system and Pilot Assist tend to command higher prices. Color can also play a role, with more popular colors retaining better value.

2020 Volvo V90 Cost of Ownership

The 2020 Volvo V90 is moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums are generally higher than average due to its luxury status and safety features. Fuel costs are reasonable, particularly with the T5 engine, but the T6 and T8 can be more demanding. Maintenance costs are in line with other European luxury vehicles, requiring specialized parts and labor. Repairs can be expensive, especially for electronic components and the air suspension. Long-term ownership costs are higher than mainstream vehicles but comparable to its luxury rivals.

2020 Volvo V90 Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 Volvo V90 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Volvo V90 Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2020 Volvo V90 competes with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon, Audi A6 allroad, and BMW 5 Series Wagon. In terms of performance, the V90's T6 engine provides adequate power, but it doesn't match the outright performance of some rivals. Features-wise, the V90 offers a comparable suite of technology and safety equipment, although the infotainment system may not be as intuitive as some competitors. Reliability is generally good, but some rivals like the Lexus RX offer a stronger track record. The V90's price point is competitive, often undercutting the Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
Alternatives to consider include the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon for a more luxurious and refined experience, or the Audi A6 allroad for its standard all-wheel drive and rugged appeal. The Buick Regal TourX (discontinued after 2020) offered a more budget-friendly wagon alternative, though it lacks the V90's premium features and brand cachet. For someone prioritizing reliability above all else, a Lexus RX might be a better choice, though it's an SUV, not a wagon.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Volvo V90 a Good Vehicle?

The 2020 Volvo V90 is ideal for buyers who appreciate Scandinavian design, a comfortable ride, and a focus on safety. It's a worthwhile purchase for those seeking a luxurious and practical wagon. Buying used offers the best value, as depreciation can be significant. The R-Design trim provides a good balance of style and features. While the T6 engine offers more power, the T5 is sufficient for most drivers and more fuel-efficient. Inspect the car thoroughly for any signs of electrical issues or deferred maintenance before buying. Ensure all recalls have been addressed and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic.

Gorgeous inside and out! I love the comfort of the interior, the drive is so sporty and the exterior is so stylish. Great technology too- easy to use.

People stop me to ask about my V90 Inscription.

Front seat comfort is excellent. Interior material is high quality and well built. Exterior paint and finish is first rate. Originally, I thought that the IPAD-like center info system would be difficult to use, but after a short time I found it actually very easy to use. For a 4 cylinder, the power is fine but the MPG is somewhat low (around 18-20 mpg city, 27-29 mpg highway; the 15 gallon fuel tank limits highway travel).
