What Problems Does the 2018 Volvo V90 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2018 Volvo V90, like other models using the SPA platform, often involve the infotainment system. Owners have noted slow response times, glitches, and occasional system freezes. Some electrical issues, such as sensor malfunctions and issues with the start/stop system, have also been reported. Specific to the 2018 model year, there have been some recalls related to potential fuel leakage and issues with the seatbelt pre-tensioners.

Long-term reliability concerns center around the complexity of the vehicle's electronics. While Volvo has a reputation for safety and durability, the numerous electronic systems can be prone to issues over time. Furthermore, the turbocharged and supercharged engines (T6) can require more diligent maintenance compared to naturally aspirated engines. It's recommended to thoroughly inspect the vehicle's maintenance history and check for any outstanding recalls before purchasing a used 2018 V90. Regular software updates are also crucial for addressing known infotainment and electronic system bugs.

How long will the 2018 Volvo V90 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 Volvo V90 can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, or 10-15 years. Key to longevity is adhering to the recommended service schedule, including regular oil changes and fluid checks. Long-term durability can be affected by the complexity of the electronics. Weaknesses over time may include increased wear and tear on suspension components, potential issues with turbocharger systems (especially on the T6), and potential failure of electronic modules if not well-maintained.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Volvo V90 boasts a comprehensive suite of technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The centerpiece is the Sensus Connect infotainment system, featuring a 9-inch touchscreen that controls navigation, audio, climate, and vehicle settings. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard driver-assistance features include lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and a rearview camera. Optional features included adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist (semi-autonomous driving), blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and park assist.

Entertainment features include a standard high-performance audio system with available Bowers & Wilkins premium sound. Safety is a Volvo hallmark, and the V90 is no exception. The 2018 V90 earned top safety ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), including a Top Safety Pick+ award. It also received a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). These ratings reflect the V90's robust construction and advanced safety technologies, reinforcing Volvo's commitment to occupant protection. Check specific crash test ratings for verification.

2018 Volvo V90 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Volvo V90 had an MSRP ranging from approximately $50,000 to $60,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $25,000 to $40,000, reflecting significant depreciation. Depreciation is influenced by mileage, condition, trim level, and market demand. Models with lower mileage, a clean accident history, and desirable options (like the Bowers & Wilkins sound system or Pilot Assist) will generally command higher resale values. Volvo's reputation for safety helps maintain reasonable resale value.

2018 Volvo V90 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2018 Volvo V90 are typically moderate to high, reflecting its luxury status and advanced safety features. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially for the T5 engine. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the vehicle's complexity and the relative scarcity of Volvo dealerships compared to more common brands. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate if the vehicle is well-maintained, but unexpected repairs can make it more costly to own than some competitors. It's generally not the most economical vehicle to own in its class.

How Does the 2018 Volvo V90 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2018 Volvo V90 competes with luxury wagons like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon, Audi A6 allroad, and BMW 5 Series Touring (though the latter wasn't sold in the US for this model year). In terms of performance, the German rivals often offer more powerful engine options and sportier handling. Feature-wise, the V90 is competitive, with a strong emphasis on safety and a stylish interior. However, its infotainment system isn't as intuitive as those found in the Mercedes or Audi.

Reliability is an area where the V90 lags slightly behind some competitors. While not unreliable, it's not known for the bulletproof reliability of some Lexus models. Price-wise, the V90 often offers a good value proposition, undercutting some of its German rivals, especially in the used market.

Alternatives to consider include the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon for a more luxurious experience and superior technology, or the Audi A6 allroad for its blend of off-road capability and luxury. If reliability is a top priority, a Lexus RX might be a better choice, albeit in SUV form.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Volvo V90 a Good Sedan?

The 2018 Volvo V90 is ideal for buyers who appreciate Scandinavian design, prioritize safety, and desire a comfortable and stylish alternative to an SUV. It's worth buying, particularly as a used vehicle, if you're comfortable with potentially higher maintenance costs and have carefully inspected the car's history. The Inscription trim offers the most luxurious experience, while the R-Design provides a sportier feel. Consider a well-maintained, lower-mileage example with a comprehensive service record. Ensure all recalls have been addressed and factor in the cost of a pre-purchase inspection.

I love it.

V90 is a hard to find Volvo Model. I looked for 1 or 2 year old one for a long time. Beautiful looking car that I have gotten many complements on. New it was a little out of my price range but at 2 years old I paid Cash. the quality of fit and finish in and out is superior. very comfortable seats with lots of adjustments. Real good on long trips. Fuel Economy for a 4000 pound car is excellent. Do not regret buying this car.

Excellent Safety History Combined With Great Looks

This is the best Volvo I have owned. I have been driving Volvos since 1960 and owned over fourty-two. Three were destroyed, while I was at a stop, having been hit by a highway patrol officer, distracted driver, and drunk driver. The new models are very efficient and have the latest electronics to guide me to my locations while providiing fantastic music. When compared to the "luxury" brands, this Volvo is in the "Best Buy" category.

Comfortable road and town wagon

Comfortable to either drive or be a passenger. Excellent road vehicle in long distance and mountain driving! If you are an Apple phone or I-pad user, the central touch system is no problem...do not rely on that national consumer publication review for your only guide if you are considering the Volvo sensus system!

Comfortable and capable, who need an SUV

This V90 has the best seats ever, and I thought my SAAB Aero had excellent seats. The V90 is quiet, reasonably quick, well equipped and AWD. The interior is well thought out, and logical. No issues with the SENSUS system that drives most of the functions. LED headlights are excellent. I would not hesitate to buy one again if something happened to this one. Downside is the high acquisition cost, that should be offset by longevity. The V90 compares favourably to my Jag, and the last 3 Mercedes. Leagues above even expensive N/A domestic vehicles. This thing is just solid and comfortable.

Luxurious and fun to drive, but not flashy

I spend a lot of time in my car, between my job and getting away on weekends. The car is safe, quiet, luxurious and peppy. I really enjoy it.

Wagon People

We are true wagon people, having Audi’s and BMW’s in the past. Though we diverted to the SUV world for a bit, we are back in the wagon world again. The V90 is more than adequate for holding and hauling our stuff. The overall design is absolutely beautiful. The engine options provide enough power for everyone, though many will be less excited by only all 4cyl alternatives. We chose the T5 and added the Polestar option. It has plenty of power for us. Good technology and safety features. We are very happy with our purchase...

The best Volvo I have owned

I owned many Volvo's for the past fifty years and my current V90 R-Design is the best one so far. I like the ample size, technology is very good, outstanding safety systems and structure, the four cylinder supercharged and turbocharged engine is remarkable in power and fuel efficency. Seats are very comfortable, and the interior is well laid out.

V90....A very elegant estate car.

Engine is a little noisy at take off but quiet afterwards. The interior is beautifully detailed and comfortable. The cargo area is big enough for much gear. The exterior is head turning for a wagon. I like this V90 over the V90 Cross Country. The V90 is an elegant estate wagon.
