2006 Chrysler 300 Review: Among The Worst Years For The Large Sedan

Rating: 4.53
Based on 71 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2006 Chrysler 300 emerged as a modern interpretation of the classic American sedan, boasting bold styling and available V8 power. As a full-size sedan, it offered a distinctive alternative to more conservatively styled competitors. The 300 was produced starting in 2005 and continuing to the present day, with the 2006 model year being a continuation of the first generation. Key trims included the base 300, Touring, Limited, and the performance-oriented 300C. Original pricing ranged from around $24,000 to over $35,000, depending on trim and options. Its popularity stemmed from its imposing presence and powerful engine choices.
The Good

The 2006 Chrysler 300 offers a blend of advantages. Performance enthusiasts appreciate the available HEMI V8. Practical buyers value its spacious cabin and comfortable ride. Its distinctive, bold design stands out. While fuel efficiency wasn't a strong point, it provided good value for its size and features, appealing to those seeking an imposing and comfortable sedan without breaking the bank.

The Bad

The 2006 Chrysler 300 has some known weaknesses. Some owners reported issues with electrical components, including the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). The suspension components can be prone to wear, leading to repairs. Fuel economy, especially with the V8, is not its strong suit. Rust can also be an issue in colder climates. Watch out for these potential problems when considering a used model.

What Problems Does the 2006 Chrysler 300 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2006 Chrysler 300 include electrical issues, particularly with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). This module controls various electrical functions, and failures can lead to stalling, starting problems, and other electrical malfunctions. Suspension components, such as ball joints and control arm bushings, are also known to wear out relatively quickly, requiring replacement. Rust can be a concern, especially in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system. Recalls for the 2006 Chrysler 300 have addressed issues such as potential fuel leaks and problems with the airbag system. Long-term reliability can be affected by the quality of maintenance. Neglecting regular fluid changes and addressing minor issues promptly can lead to more significant problems down the road. Specific model year variations in reported issues are relatively minor, but it's generally advisable to check for any outstanding recalls and obtain a thorough pre-purchase inspection from a qualified mechanic.

How long will the 2006 Chrysler 300 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2006 Chrysler 300 can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. Years of service depend greatly on owner care. Neglecting maintenance can shorten its lifespan considerably. Long-term durability is generally acceptable, but certain components are more prone to failure. The suspension, as mentioned, is a common area of concern. Electrical gremlins can also emerge over time, potentially requiring troubleshooting and repairs. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items, and addressing issues proactively are crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan and reliability.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Chrysler 300 offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included power windows and locks, air conditioning, and a basic audio system. Higher trims added features like a premium sound system, leather upholstery, and dual-zone climate control. Some models included an optional navigation system. For entertainment, it featured a CD player and available satellite radio. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles but included available features such as traction control and anti-lock brakes (ABS).
Safety features included front and side airbags, as well as available side curtain airbags. The 2006 Chrysler 300 received good crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The NHTSA gave it five stars for frontal driver-side and passenger-side crash protection, and four stars for side crash protection. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating for frontal offset crash tests. These ratings provided reassurance to buyers seeking a safe and spacious sedan. However, it lacked advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control, which are common in newer cars.

2006 Chrysler 300 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Chrysler 300 ranged from approximately $24,000 to $35,000+, depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and location, typically ranging from $3,000 to $8,000. Depreciation has been significant, as with most vehicles of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it's a desirable trim like the 300C with the HEMI engine. Clean titles and well-documented service records will command higher prices.

2006 Chrysler 300 Cost of Ownership

The 2006 Chrysler 300 is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typical for a large sedan. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V8 engine. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average, given potential electrical and suspension issues. Parts availability is generally good, but labor costs can add up. Long-term, owners should budget for potential repairs to keep it running reliably. It's not the most economical choice, particularly compared to smaller, more fuel-efficient cars.

2006 Chrysler 300 Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 Chrysler 300 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Chrysler 300 Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2006 Chrysler 300 competed with full-size sedans like the Ford Crown Victoria, Chevrolet Impala, Toyota Avalon, and Buick Lucerne. Compared to the Crown Victoria, the 300 offered more modern styling and a more refined interior. The Impala was generally more fuel-efficient but lacked the 300's bold design. The Avalon provided superior reliability and a smoother ride, while the Lucerne offered a more luxurious experience.
In terms of performance, the 300C's HEMI V8 was a standout, offering comparable power to some sports cars. Feature-wise, the 300 held its own against competitors, offering a good balance of amenities for its price point. However, its reliability record lagged behind Toyota and Buick.
Alternatives to the 2006 Chrysler 300 include a slightly newer Toyota Avalon for increased reliability or a Buick Lucerne for a more comfortable ride. If performance is a priority, a newer Dodge Charger (related to the 300) could be a better choice. Considering the age of the 2006 model, carefully weigh reliability against the 300's distinctive styling and available V8 power.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Chrysler 300 a Good Vehicle?

The 2006 Chrysler 300 is ideal for buyers seeking a bold and stylish full-size sedan with available V8 power at an affordable price point in the used market. It's worth buying *if* you are aware of its potential reliability issues and are prepared for potential maintenance costs. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial. The 300C trim is desirable for its performance, but expect higher fuel consumption and potential repair costs. It's best suited for those who appreciate its distinctive styling and don't mind potentially addressing issues as they arise. Consider a well-maintained example with lower mileage and a good service history.

My 300c is a 2006 with 86,xxx miles on it. I love this car, roomy, reliable, and handsome. My paint is great, no peeling or fading. The 5.7 hemi has performed flawlessly, but being 16 years old, I'm going to add a few performance parts, intake and exhaust mainly. I have two complaints,

It's Been Reliable, But...

I have a 2006 Chrysler 300 AWD. I bought it used 13 years ago. Currently, it has 136K miles on it. So far, I've only had maintenance repairs -- tie rod replacements, tires, battery, brakes, and most recently a starter. It's a roomy car with comfortable leather seats. The drivers seat has cracked and torn. The trunk is huge with a pass-through in the back seat. The battery is in the trunk which makes it easy to replace. It's a huge battery so it's pricey to replace. Being AWD, you can't replace just one tire. All of them need to be replaced at the same time. The built-in garage door-sync is nice but I've noticed I have to be practically to the garage door and hold it down for it to work. I used to be able to open the garage door from the street. Power windows/mirrors and moonroof. Heated front seats are awesome. It's rides comfortably and smooth. It does not have the get up and go if you need to get in or out of traffic quickly -- there's too much lag time before the engine kicks in. Every now and then, I notice the engine lose slight power when sitting at a stop light -- like it's going to die. Lifters are knocking, too. Overall, it's not been too bad of a car but I've not been very happy over the performance issues.
