Rating: 4.62
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2017 Subaru Impreza, part of the fifth generation (2017-2023), offers a blend of practicality and Subaru's signature features. Available as a sedan or hatchback, it's known for its standard all-wheel drive. Key trims include the base, Premium, Sport, and Limited. New, the Impreza ranged from around $18,000 to $25,000. Its popularity stems from its AWD capability, fuel efficiency, and reputation for reliability.
The Good

The 2017 Impreza boasts standard AWD, appealing to practical buyers seeking all-weather capability. It offers a comfortable ride and decent fuel economy. Emotionally, it provides the Subaru "go-anywhere" image. While not a performance car, it's reliable and offers good value for money, especially with its strong safety ratings and available tech.

The Bad

The 2017 Impreza's engine is often criticized for being underpowered, resulting in slow acceleration. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) can feel sluggish. Some owners report infotainment system glitches. While reliable overall, watch for potential oil consumption issues and ensure regular maintenance to avoid CVT problems.

What Problems Does the 2017 Subaru Impreza Have?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza generally enjoys good reliability, but some owners have reported a few common issues. One frequent concern revolves around excessive oil consumption, although this is not as prevalent as in some older Subaru models. Regular oil level checks are crucial. The CVT transmission, while generally reliable, can exhibit sluggish behavior or, in rare cases, require replacement if not properly maintained. Some owners have noted infotainment system glitches, such as slow response times or connectivity problems, but these are typically minor. There have been some recalls related to potential fuel pump failures or issues with the PCV valve, so checking the vehicle's VIN against Subaru's recall database is recommended.
Long-term reliability concerns mainly focus on the CVT's lifespan and the potential for increased oil consumption as the car ages. Ensuring timely maintenance, including CVT fluid changes and regular oil checks, is essential for mitigating these risks. Otherwise, the 2017 Impreza tends to be a dependable vehicle with proper care.

How long will the 2017 Subaru Impreza last?

With good maintenance, a 2017 Subaru Impreza can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more, potentially lasting 10-15 years. Subaru's are known for their longevity. However, long-term durability hinges on adherence to the maintenance schedule, particularly CVT fluid changes. Potential weaknesses include increased oil consumption as the engine ages and possible wear on suspension components. Addressing these proactively can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its class. The base model includes a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Subaru Starlink, offering smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). Higher trims boast an 8-inch touchscreen.
Entertainment features include a standard four-speaker audio system, with optional upgrades to a premium Harman Kardon system in higher trims. Driver-assistance features are available through Subaru's EyeSight system (optional), which includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available on the Limited trim.
Safety features include standard rearview camera, anti-lock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags. The 2017 Impreza earned excellent crash-test ratings from the IIHS, receiving a "Top Safety Pick+" designation, and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. This makes it a very safe option for families and safety-conscious buyers. Optional features like keyless entry, push-button start, and a sunroof enhance the driving experience.

2017 Subaru Impreza Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Subaru Impreza ranged from approximately $18,000 to $25,000 depending on trim and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used models typically sell for between $12,000 and $18,000, depending on mileage, condition, and location. Depreciation is relatively slow due to Subaru's reputation for reliability and the desirability of AWD. Factors affecting resale value include condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable options like EyeSight. Lower mileage examples and those in excellent condition command higher prices.

2017 Subaru Impreza Cost of Ownership

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the CVT. Maintenance is generally affordable, but CVT fluid changes and potential oil consumption could add to expenses. Repairs are usually not overly expensive. Overall, the Impreza offers a good balance between upfront cost and long-term running expenses, making it a relatively budget-friendly option.

2017 Subaru Impreza Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 Subaru Impreza is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Subaru Impreza Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza competes with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. Compared to the Civic and Mazda3, the Impreza lags in driving enjoyment and engine power but wins in all-weather capability thanks to standard AWD. The Corolla offers similar reliability but lacks the Impreza's standard AWD. The Elantra provides a more affordable option but may not hold its value as well.
In terms of features, the Impreza is competitive, especially with available EyeSight. Reliability is generally good, on par with the Corolla and Civic. Pricing is competitive, especially considering standard AWD.
Alternatives include the Mazda3, which offers a more engaging driving experience and stylish design, and the Honda Civic, known for its efficiency and spacious interior. If AWD isn't a priority, these are good choices. The Toyota Corolla offers similar reliability and value. However, for buyers specifically needing AWD in a compact car, the Impreza stands out as a strong contender.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza a Good Vehicle?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable, safe, and fuel-efficient compact car with standard all-wheel drive. It's a good choice for those living in areas with inclement weather. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs. A used 2017 Impreza offers excellent value, especially if properly maintained. Consider the Premium or Limited trims for added features and safety technology. If AWD is essential, the Impreza is a strong contender; otherwise, rivals like the Mazda3 and Honda Civic offer more engaging driving experiences.

Almost perfect.

Front mid console is a bit awkward in placement, making it difficult to put two drinks in the designed locations. Its also awkward for the passenger to open the compartment because the fit is too close to the front seats. The lack of any dedicated sunglass compartment is frustrating. How about as part of the overhead info center?

Just got it- still "breaking it in"

Love all the fancy doo-dads- heated seats, Bluetooth connectivity and hands-free feature, good legroom front and back, and rear camera. It actually has LESS storage space than my 2008 Nissan Sentra! But, in the Sentra, legroom was sacrificed for a gigantic trunk.... So far, I'm having fun driving an automatic- it's been over 20 years. The Impreza handles well on the curving mountain roads I drive; good power for passing slower trucks going up the mountains. Looking forward to "real" winter driving.....

2nd IMPREZA -GREAT CAR

This is my second Impreza - I would not have changed from my 2013 Impreza but I did not have all the safety alerts so I (very reluctantly) upgraded to the 2017. This car is great and I am thankful for all the safety alerts. I have not had to use the automatic break feature (thank God) but I am grateful that it is there.
