The Good
The 2008 Impreza boasts confident all-weather performance thanks to its standard AWD. It offers reasonable reliability and decent fuel efficiency for its class. The hatchback provides practical cargo space. Emotionally, the WRX delivers a sporty driving experience, while practically, it's an affordable and capable compact car.
The Bad
The 2008 Impreza's weaknesses include a somewhat bland interior and a less-than-inspiring base engine. Some owners have reported issues with oil consumption and head gasket failures, particularly on the naturally aspirated engine. The WRX, while fun, can be expensive to maintain and insure.

What Problems Does the 2008 Subaru Impreza Have?
Recalls for the 2008 Impreza have included issues related to the fuel pump and brake light switch, which could affect braking performance and safety. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the head gaskets and the potential for increased oil consumption as the engine ages. The WRX, while generally reliable, can be more sensitive to maintenance neglect and modifications, potentially leading to turbocharger or engine damage. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and inspections, is critical to mitigating these risks.

How Does the 2008 Subaru Impreza Compare to Other Sedan?
In terms of reliability, the Civic and Corolla generally outperformed the Impreza, particularly regarding head gasket issues. The Mazda3 offered similar reliability. The Impreza's features were comparable to its rivals, though some offered more advanced tech options.
A similar alternative to the Impreza, considering AWD and practicality, would be the Toyota Matrix (Pontiac Vibe), though it lacks the Impreza's sporty character. If AWD is not a necessity, a Honda Civic or Mazda3 might be a better choice for long-term reliability and lower running costs.
