2008 Subaru Impreza Review: A Compact That Drives Like an Off-Road SUV

Rating: 4.17
Based on 70 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Subaru Impreza marked the start of its third generation. Available as a sedan or hatchback, it offered Subaru's signature symmetrical all-wheel drive. Key trims included the base Impreza, the performance-oriented WRX, and the luxurious Outback Sport. New, it ranged approximately from $17,000 to $25,000. Its popularity stems from its all-weather capability, practicality, and rally-inspired performance in the WRX variant.
The Good

The 2008 Impreza boasts confident all-weather performance thanks to its standard AWD. It offers reasonable reliability and decent fuel efficiency for its class. The hatchback provides practical cargo space. Emotionally, the WRX delivers a sporty driving experience, while practically, it's an affordable and capable compact car.

The Bad

The 2008 Impreza's weaknesses include a somewhat bland interior and a less-than-inspiring base engine. Some owners have reported issues with oil consumption and head gasket failures, particularly on the naturally aspirated engine. The WRX, while fun, can be expensive to maintain and insure.

What Problems Does the 2008 Subaru Impreza Have?

The 2008 Subaru Impreza, particularly the naturally aspirated 2.5L engine, is known for potential head gasket failures. This issue can lead to overheating and costly repairs. Oil consumption is another frequently reported problem, requiring owners to regularly check and top off the oil levels. Some owners have also reported issues with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting or slipping.

Recalls for the 2008 Impreza have included issues related to the fuel pump and brake light switch, which could affect braking performance and safety. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the head gaskets and the potential for increased oil consumption as the engine ages. The WRX, while generally reliable, can be more sensitive to maintenance neglect and modifications, potentially leading to turbocharger or engine damage. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and inspections, is critical to mitigating these risks.

How long will the 2008 Subaru Impreza last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Subaru Impreza can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 15-20 years of service from their Imprezas. However, long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance, particularly addressing the head gasket and oil consumption issues. Weaknesses over time include potential rust in regions with harsh winters, suspension component wear, and the eventual need for replacement of major components like the timing belt (if applicable) and catalytic converter.

I had an 08 impreza for 4 years. It cost me 12k over those 4 years and it died because it was overheating due to head gaskets.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Subaru Impreza offered relatively basic technology for its time. Standard entertainment features typically included a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary input jack. Higher trims might have included an upgraded audio system with satellite radio capability.

Driver-assistance features were minimal, with standard antilock brakes (ABS) and available electronic stability control (ESC). There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning available.

Safety features included front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for head protection.

The 2008 Subaru Impreza received good crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The IIHS awarded it a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact tests. NHTSA ratings varied depending on the specific test and model, but generally, the Impreza performed well in frontal and side crash tests. Check official IIHS and NHTSA websites for specific ratings and details.

2008 Subaru Impreza Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Subaru Impreza ranged from approximately $17,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices vary greatly based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find base models ranging from $4,000 to $8,000, while WRX models can fetch $8,000 to $15,000 or more. The Impreza's all-wheel-drive system contributes to decent resale value, but high mileage, poor maintenance, and any accident history significantly impact the price. WRX models, due to their performance appeal, generally hold their value better than base models.

2008 Subaru Impreza Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Subaru Impreza is moderately economical to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially for the base model. Maintenance can be more expensive than some rivals due to the Subaru's horizontally opposed engine design, which can increase labor costs for certain repairs. Repair costs can be higher if head gasket issues arise. The WRX, with its turbocharged engine, will have higher maintenance and repair costs compared to the base model.

2008 Subaru Impreza Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Subaru Impreza is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Subaru Impreza Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2008 Subaru Impreza competed with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Mitsubishi Lancer. Compared to the Civic and Corolla, the Impreza offered standard all-wheel drive, giving it an edge in inclement weather but sacrificing some fuel economy. The Mazda3 offered a sportier driving experience than the base Impreza but lacked AWD. The Mitsubishi Lancer, especially the Lancer Evolution, provided similar rally-inspired performance to the WRX but could be less reliable.

In terms of reliability, the Civic and Corolla generally outperformed the Impreza, particularly regarding head gasket issues. The Mazda3 offered similar reliability. The Impreza's features were comparable to its rivals, though some offered more advanced tech options.

A similar alternative to the Impreza, considering AWD and practicality, would be the Toyota Matrix (Pontiac Vibe), though it lacks the Impreza's sporty character. If AWD is not a necessity, a Honda Civic or Mazda3 might be a better choice for long-term reliability and lower running costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Subaru Impreza a Good Sedan?

The 2008 Subaru Impreza is ideal for drivers who prioritize all-wheel drive capability and practicality in a compact car. It's worth buying used, especially if you live in an area with frequent snow or rain. A well-maintained example with documented service history is essential. Avoid models with excessive mileage or signs of neglect. The WRX is a fun option for enthusiasts, but be prepared for higher maintenance and insurance costs. If AWD is non-negotiable, and you're on a budget, a 2008 Impreza can be a good choice, but thoroughly inspect it before purchasing and factor in potential repair costs.

Great car for the money

This car did every thing a AWD sedan should do. Great in snow and still gets good gas mileage. The Subaru brand has never let me down.
