Rating: 4.42
Based on 38 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2010 Subaru Impreza, part of the third generation (2007-2011), offers a practical and versatile driving experience. Available as a sedan or hatchback, its key trims include the base 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, and the sporty WRX. New pricing ranged from approximately $17,000 to $25,000. The Impreza is popular for its standard all-wheel drive (AWD) system, making it a capable choice in various weather conditions. It stands out due to its blend of practicality, safety, and Subaru's renowned reliability.
The Good

The 2010 Subaru Impreza offers a compelling mix of practicality and fun. Its AWD provides confident handling in various conditions (emotional), while its reputation for reliability and decent fuel economy appeal to the practical buyer. The Impreza also delivers adequate comfort for daily driving and represents solid value for money given its features.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2010 Subaru Impreza include its somewhat lackluster base engine performance. Interior materials can feel basic, and road noise can be noticeable. Oil consumption can be a concern in some models, so regular monitoring is crucial. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, should also be inspected. Finally, the factory head unit is dated.

What Problems Does the 2010 Subaru Impreza Have?

The 2010 Subaru Impreza, like other models from this era, has some frequently reported problems. One common issue is excessive oil consumption, particularly in the naturally aspirated 2.5L engine. Regularly checking and topping off the oil is crucial to prevent engine damage. Head gasket failures, a long-standing Subaru issue, can still occur, although less frequently than in older models. The WRX model is susceptible to issues related to the turbocharger and intercooler, especially if not properly maintained.

Rust can be a problem, especially in areas where road salt is used. Inspecting the undercarriage and wheel wells for corrosion is recommended. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, such as slipping or rough shifting, although this is less common. Recalls for the 2010 Impreza have addressed issues such as potential fuel delivery problems and brake light switch malfunctions. Checking the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls is recommended before purchasing a used model. Long-term reliability can be good with proper maintenance, but neglecting issues like oil consumption can lead to significant problems down the road.

How long will the 2010 Subaru Impreza last?

With good maintenance, a 2010 Subaru Impreza can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 10-15 years of service. Durability is generally strong, but consistent maintenance is key. Weaknesses over time include potential rust, especially in colder climates, and wear and tear on suspension components. Addressing oil consumption promptly is crucial for long engine life. Regular fluid changes (oil, coolant, transmission) and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires will significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan.

I fricking LOVE this car!! I am so happy with my purchase! I only wish I had purchased it sooner. It is zippy and fun!
Jenifer
I recently purchased this car used and I am completely satisfied with this purchase. It?s a great runner, good on gas mileage and very stylish and safe!!
DietWRX
This car meet all of my needs, it's perfect for new and experienced drivers. For the price it's a lot harder to get that much power from much else. Its recent and works great, great handling, no engine problems at 120,000 miles and its can move.
Negative Owner Reviews
J-rod
I bought my 2010 2.5i premium sedan at 30k miles. It didn't take long for the interior to make slight crinkling and cracking noises every time I went over a bump. Somehow a panel in the back popped out and won't go back in. The seat is noisy when I move around. So the interior is a bit cheap. Then shifting is choppy especially when the AC is on. I can't shift into reverse half the time unless the car is slowly coasting forward. I got this car to drive to work in the snow and for reliability. The viscous cuppling, a part of the all wheel drive system went bad costing me $1600. The mechanic said it could've been due to uneven tire sizes. Idk. I kept the tires that were on the car when I bought it. Other than that a great car!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Subaru Impreza's tech features are relatively basic compared to modern vehicles. Standard entertainment includes a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary input jack. Higher trims may offer an upgraded sound system. Navigation was an optional feature. Driver-assistance features are limited; electronic stability control (VSC) and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard. Safety features include front, side, and curtain airbags.

Crash-test ratings are generally good. The 2010 Impreza received high scores from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Specifically, it was named a Top Safety Pick. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings also show good performance in frontal and side crash tests. However, technology like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control were not available at this time. The car relies on traditional safety systems such as airbags and seatbelts. The optional fog lights are another nice-to-have safety feature. Overall, the 2010 Impreza prioritizes fundamental safety over advanced tech.

2010 Subaru Impreza Prices and Market Value

The 2010 Subaru Impreza had a new MSRP range of roughly $17,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and location, but typically range from $5,000 to $12,000. The Impreza holds its value relatively well due to its AWD system and reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident history, and overall condition. Models with lower mileage and comprehensive service records command higher prices. The WRX trim tends to retain more value than the base models.

2010 Subaru Impreza Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Subaru Impreza is generally considered relatively economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent, although not exceptional. Maintenance costs can be average, but the potential for oil consumption issues can increase long-term repair expenses. Parts availability is good. While not the cheapest car to own, the Impreza's reliability and durability can make it a cost-effective choice over the long run, provided maintenance is kept up to date and repairs are addressed promptly.

2010 Subaru Impreza Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Subaru Impreza is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Subaru Impreza Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2010 Subaru Impreza competes with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Volkswagen Golf. Compared to the Civic and Corolla, the Impreza stands out with its standard AWD, providing superior traction in inclement weather. The Mazda3 offers a sportier driving experience, but lacks AWD in most trims. The VW Golf provides a more refined interior, but can be more expensive to maintain. In terms of reliability, the Impreza is generally on par with the Civic and Corolla, but potentially less reliable than the Mazda3 depending on the specific year and engine. The WRX variant offers significantly more performance than most rivals in its class.

Alternatives to the Impreza include the Mitsubishi Lancer (also available with AWD) and the Suzuki SX4 (a less common but affordable AWD option). If AWD isn't a necessity, the Honda Civic and Mazda3 offer comparable fuel economy and reliability at a similar price point. For someone prioritizing interior quality and driving dynamics over AWD, the VW Golf is a good choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Subaru Impreza a Good Sedan?

The 2010 Subaru Impreza is ideal for drivers who prioritize all-weather capability and a reputation for reliability. It's a good choice for those living in areas with snow or rain. Whether it's worth buying depends on the condition and price of the used vehicle. A well-maintained Impreza with a clean history is a solid buy. The WRX trim is worth considering for enthusiasts seeking a fun and practical performance car. Before purchasing, have a mechanic inspect the car for potential issues like oil consumption and rust. Avoid examples with a questionable maintenance history. If AWD is not needed, other options might offer better fuel economy or a more refined interior, but the Impreza remains a competent and practical choice.

Know what you’re getting into

I bought this car with about 88K miles on it. I knew with Subaru’s once they hit 100K+ they would require maintenance. I spent a bit over $9K for my car and have spent roughly right around the same to get it running the way it should be. The most recent problem was having to rebuild my entire engine due to major oil leaks. This car will last you a long time if you take care of it from the get go. Do not listen to dealerships and take it in for an inspection ASAP if you decide to purchase.

Good handling and reliable car

Used this car for commuting and liked the way it handles. The AWD made it nice to drive. Gave least problems. Great value for the money.

Fun to drive, however the engine is unreliable

The car is a great looking car (I have the sedan version) and is incredibly fun to drive with the 5-speed manual transmission. However, the engine and transmission are not super reliable. The engine often has head gasket problems around 100k miles, and mine blew a rod within 10000 miles of me buying it (total 105000 miles).

For $8,500 you can get a lot of power.

This car meet all of my needs, it's perfect for new and experienced drivers. For the price it's a lot harder to get that much power from much else. Its recent and works great, great handling, no engine problems at 120,000 miles and its can move.
