Rating: 4.49
Based on 17 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2004 Subaru Impreza, part of the second generation (2000-2007), is known for its standard all-wheel drive. Available as a sedan or wagon, it offered a blend of practicality and sporty handling. Key trims included the base Impreza, the RS, and the performance-oriented WRX and WRX STI. The original MSRP ranged from approximately $16,000 to $31,000 depending on the trim. Its symmetrical AWD and rally-inspired performance made it popular.
The Good

The 2004 Impreza's advantages include its confident all-weather performance due to AWD, a reputation for reliability (though specific issues exist), and a practical wagon body style. Performance enthusiasts are drawn to the WRX models, while practical buyers appreciate the Impreza's fuel efficiency and overall value.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2004 Impreza include potential head gasket issues, especially in naturally aspirated engines. Rust can also be a concern, particularly in areas with road salt. The interior is often criticized for its basic design and materials. The WRX models require more frequent and potentially costly maintenance.

What Problems Does the 2004 Subaru Impreza Have?

The 2004 Subaru Impreza is known for a few frequently reported problems. The most significant is the potential for head gasket failure, particularly in the naturally aspirated 2.5L engines (Impreza and RS models). This issue can lead to coolant leaks, overheating, and potentially engine damage. Rust is also a common concern, especially in areas where road salt is used extensively. The rear wheel arches and undercarriage are particularly susceptible. The WRX models, while offering performance, can be more prone to issues related to turbocharger maintenance and wear. Some owners have reported issues with the clutch in the WRX, especially with aggressive driving. Recalls have been issued for various issues over the years, including potential fuel leakage and airbag inflator problems. It's crucial to check the VIN with the NHTSA database to determine if any recalls are outstanding. Long-term reliability hinges heavily on maintenance. Neglecting scheduled maintenance, especially oil changes and timing belt replacements, can significantly shorten the lifespan of the engine. The EJ255 engine in the STI, while powerful, requires meticulous care.

How long will the 2004 Subaru Impreza last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Subaru Impreza can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this mileage with regular servicing. However, consistent neglect can lead to significant problems well before this point. The head gasket issue remains the biggest long-term durability concern for non-turbo models. Rust can also significantly impact longevity, especially in colder climates. WRX and STI models, if driven hard and not maintained diligently, might experience premature wear on the turbocharger, clutch, and other performance-related components. Paying attention to maintenance schedules and addressing issues promptly is key to extending the life of a 2004 Impreza.

It does everything! An absolute blast to drive, plenty of power and excellent handling, all-weather capability and you can throw your bike in the back. It even works as a family car, when the kids are small! Plenty of legroom & headroom up front, really intuitive controls, quality interior. Very easy to get to know this car and wow does it drive well.

Safe and reliable with a sporty performance. Handled well under all conditions. Has a great sound system also. Was a fun car to just get out and enjoy a drive.

It was a HUGE score for this wrx. It only had 87k and it was an 05 and bought it for 7800. Love the cars.com app.
Negative Owner Reviews
Subie_boostin
Dont get me wrong its an amazing car overall but for the price you guys are asking for is way too much since its just a stock 2004 wrx and its automatic which makes no sense to me at all because for the same price your better off just buying an STi...

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Subaru Impreza's technology and features were relatively basic compared to modern cars. Entertainment typically consisted of a standard AM/FM radio with a CD player, though some models might have had upgraded sound systems as optional equipment. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems available at the time.
Safety features included standard front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were often an option or standard on higher trims. Side airbags were also available as an option on some models. Driver-assistance technology was non-existent.
The WRX and WRX STI models, while offering performance upgrades, didn't significantly enhance the tech or safety features beyond what was available on the lower trims.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied depending on the specific test. The 2004 Impreza generally received good scores for frontal crash protection but marginal scores for side-impact protection. It is always advisable to check these ratings directly from the IIHS and NHTSA websites for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

2004 Subaru Impreza Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Subaru Impreza ranged from around $16,000 for the base model to over $31,000 for a fully-equipped WRX STI. Used market prices today (2023) vary greatly based on condition, mileage, and trim. A well-maintained base Impreza might sell for between $3,000 and $6,000, while a clean WRX or STI could fetch significantly more, ranging from $10,000 to $25,000+, especially if it's unmolested and has low mileage. The WRX and STI models hold their value better due to their performance pedigree and cult following. Factors affecting resale value include condition, mileage, service history, and whether the car has been modified.

2004 Subaru Impreza Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2004 Impreza are generally moderate, but the WRX and STI models can be more expensive due to their higher performance. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine; the base Impreza is reasonably efficient, while the WRX and STI consume more fuel. Maintenance and repair costs can be moderate to high. The head gasket issue can be a significant expense. WRX/STI models also have higher maintenance costs due to their performance components. Overall, the Impreza can be economical to own, but the WRX/STI variants can be relatively costly in the long run.

2004 Subaru Impreza Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Subaru Impreza is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Subaru Impreza Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2004 Subaru Impreza competed with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3 (Mazda Protege in 2004), and Mitsubishi Lancer. Compared to the Civic and Corolla, the Impreza offered standard AWD, a significant advantage in inclement weather. The Mazda 3 offered sportier handling than the base Impreza but lacked AWD. The Mitsubishi Lancer, particularly the Lancer Evolution, was a closer competitor to the WRX/STI in terms of performance, though reliability could be a concern. In terms of reliability, the Civic and Corolla generally had a better reputation. Features-wise, the Impreza was fairly basic compared to some of its rivals. Price-wise, the Impreza was competitive, but the WRX/STI commanded a premium.
Alternatives to the 2004 Impreza include the Honda Civic Si (for sporty handling and reliability), the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe (for practicality), and the Mitsubishi Lancer (for a similar AWD experience). If AWD isn't a necessity, the Mazda 3 offers a more engaging driving experience for a similar price point.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Subaru Impreza a Good Wagon?

The 2004 Subaru Impreza is ideal for someone seeking a practical and capable vehicle with standard all-wheel drive, especially in regions with challenging weather conditions. Whether it's worth buying depends on the individual's needs and budget. A well-maintained base Impreza or RS can be a good value, but potential head gasket issues must be considered. The WRX and STI are appealing to performance enthusiasts but require a higher budget and careful inspection. Buying a used 2004 Impreza is generally recommended over buying new (since new is not an option). Prioritize models with comprehensive service records and a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic.

2004 Impreza Outback Sport

I love my 2004 Impreza Outback Sport. It’s safe, spacious, and does all that I ask it to. Great in the snow and a blast on curvy backroads. Handles great. The only modification I’ve done is that I’ve put 2.5rs / WRX 5 spoke alloys on it. Same size as the original so no change in performance. This would make a great first car too.

Good little car, noisy on the highway though.

I had the 2004 Impreza Wagon with the automatic transmission, for 12 years, and put 150 thousand miles on it. It was great for most things, my only real complaint was noise at highway speeds. It got old. It got decent mileage, used to get the EPA values (22 mpg city, 28 hwy). Maintenance was not expensive and it was a very DIY-friendly car. With studded snow tires it was unbeatable in snow.

College Car

Just purchased for my son to take to college. Have only owned for a week; but, had a great experience with the dealer and looking forward to having this car last all through the college years. Living in Upstate NY the AWD was vital to our needs in wanting to make sure our son was safe.

Best car i have owned or will ever own

its got the power. Its got the looks. Its got the comfort. These are just the general comments i can give you of this car. I have owned it for 4 years and have not had any problems. With a new exhaust and some nice mods like a turbo, this car can hit greater speeds than m3's and porsches
