2009 Subaru Impreza Review: One of the Most Rugged Compacts on the Market

Rating: 4.46
Based on 45 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Subaru Impreza is part of the third generation (2008-2011) known for its practicality and standard all-wheel drive. Available as a sedan or hatchback, key trims included the base Impreza, the Outback Sport, and the WRX. Its popularity stemmed from its reliability, fuel efficiency for an AWD vehicle, and Subaru's reputation for safety. The pricing range when new was roughly $17,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2009 Impreza appeals to both practical and emotional buyers. Its advantages include standard all-wheel drive for enhanced safety and handling, above-average reliability, and decent fuel efficiency. The sporty WRX trim offered a performance boost appealing to driving enthusiasts, while the overall value and dependability made it a sensible choice for everyday commuting.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 Impreza include a somewhat bland interior, especially in the base models. Some owners reported issues with oil consumption in the non-turbo engines. The ride can be firm, and the base engine may feel underpowered for some. Rust can be a concern in areas with heavy road salt use.

What Problems Does the 2009 Subaru Impreza Have?

The 2009 Subaru Impreza, while generally reliable, had some frequently reported issues. One common concern, particularly with the naturally aspirated 2.5L engine, was excessive oil consumption. Some owners reported needing to add oil between changes, which could lead to engine damage if not monitored carefully. Catalytic converter failures were also occasionally reported.

Recalls for the 2009 Impreza included issues related to the fuel pump relay and potential problems with the brake light switch. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to see if all applicable recalls were addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns revolved around head gasket issues (a Subaru staple, though less prevalent in this generation than earlier ones, particularly on the non-turbo engine), particularly if the car was not properly maintained. Rust could also be a problem in areas with harsh winters and road salt. The WRX models, due to their performance-oriented nature, may have experienced more wear and tear depending on the previous owner's driving habits. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and inspections, is crucial for mitigating these risks.

How long will the 2009 Subaru Impreza last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Subaru Impreza can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Expect an average of 15-20 years of service with consistent care. Long-term durability hinges on addressing potential oil consumption issues and preventing rust. Weaknesses over time include suspension components wearing out, potential for head gasket leaks (less common but still possible), and the gradual degradation of interior plastics. Regular fluid changes (oil, coolant, transmission) are key to longevity. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Subaru Impreza offered a relatively basic tech and entertainment package by modern standards. Standard features included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims might have offered an upgraded audio system with satellite radio capability. Navigation was not a commonly available factory option on the 2009 Impreza.

Driver-assistance features were limited. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) were standard. No advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control were available.

Safety features included standard front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for both front and rear occupants.

Crash-test ratings for the 2009 Subaru Impreza were generally good. The NHTSA awarded it four or five stars in most crash test categories. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact crash tests, earning it a "Top Safety Pick" designation. These solid safety ratings were a key selling point for the Impreza.

2009 Subaru Impreza Prices and Market Value

The 2009 Subaru Impreza had a starting MSRP around $17,000 when new, with the WRX trim reaching approximately $25,000. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and trim, ranging from roughly $5,000 to $12,000. Depreciation has been significant, but Subaru's reputation for reliability and the appeal of all-wheel drive help maintain resale value. Factors affecting resale include mileage, maintenance history, absence of rust, and whether it's a desirable trim like the WRX. Well-maintained examples command a premium.

2009 Subaru Impreza Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Subaru Impreza is generally considered relatively economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent, especially for an AWD vehicle. Maintenance costs can be average, but potential oil consumption issues in the naturally aspirated engine could lead to higher repair bills if not addressed. Regular maintenance is key to avoiding costly repairs. Long-term ownership costs are reasonable if the car is well-maintained.

2009 Subaru Impreza Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Subaru Impreza is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Subaru Impreza Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2009 Subaru Impreza competed with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Nissan Sentra. Compared to these rivals, the Impreza's main advantage was its standard all-wheel drive, offering superior traction in inclement weather. The Civic and Corolla were typically more fuel-efficient and offered a slightly more refined interior, but lacked AWD.

In terms of reliability, the Impreza was generally on par with the Civic and Corolla, although the oil consumption issues on some engines could be a concern. The Mazda3 offered a sportier driving experience than the base Impreza, but lacked the AWD option. The Sentra was often priced lower, but its reliability was sometimes questioned. For those prioritizing fuel efficiency and a more comfortable ride, the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla might be better choices. However, for buyers needing all-weather capability and a reliable AWD system, the Impreza was a strong contender. The Mazda3 is a similar alternative if AWD is not a must and a sportier drive is desired. The Mitsubishi Lancer (AWD versions) could also be considered but it is not as refined as the Impreza.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Subaru Impreza a Good Wagon?

The 2009 Subaru Impreza is a good choice for buyers seeking a reliable and practical compact car with all-wheel drive. It's ideal for those living in areas with snow or rain, or those who simply value the added traction and stability. Whether it's worth buying depends on the condition and price. A well-maintained example with documented service history is crucial. The WRX trim offers more performance, but be prepared for higher running costs. Avoid models with excessive rust or signs of neglect. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended, especially to check for oil leaks and potential head gasket issues.

Great commuting car or second car for errands, etc

This car served us well for commuting and errands. It has been a reliable basic car. It has great cargo capacity for a small car and is easy to park in congested neighborhoods. Brakes are all new -- pads, rotors and calipers -- at the beginning of last winter.

Is this common??

I bought the car on 9/28/18 from Northwest Motorsports. I come to find out the radiator is shot when I turned on my ac and the car got hot. I haven?t even made my first payment. The salesman went to their Lynwood location the day before and on his way back the car he said blew a hose and he fixed it. I don?t think this is the kind of problem I should be having for an $8,000 car already

Great Car!

the car is used and runs so smooth, its like new! the only thing I am not impressed with is the fact it doesn't have an aux plug, but it is an older vehicle and I knew it wasn't going too. the cloth black seats are perfect when you have a child that likes to make a mess. it is very roomy and has a nice look to it.

Great car, handles well and reliable.

It felt sporty and handled well. I had a remote start added to it and a hitch to transport bicycles but otherwise, it had everything I wanted & needed.
