Rating: 4.59
Based on 100 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2017 Chevrolet Traverse is a full-size SUV designed for families needing space and versatility. It's part of the second generation, which began in 2009. The 2017 model is available in LS, LT, Premier, and High Country trims. Pricing ranged from around $30,000 to $45,000 when new. Its popularity stems from its spacious three-row seating, ample cargo capacity, and relatively smooth ride compared to other large SUVs.
The Good

The 2017 Traverse boasts a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to families needing practicality. Its V6 engine delivers adequate performance. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers good value for its size. Emotionally, buyers appreciate the sense of security and capability provided by a large SUV.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2017 Traverse include below-average fuel economy for its class and some reported issues with the transmission. The infotainment system can feel dated compared to newer models. Watch out for potential air conditioning problems and ensure regular maintenance to mitigate transmission concerns.

What Problems Does the 2017 Chevrolet Traverse Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2017 Chevrolet Traverse include issues with the air conditioning system, particularly compressor failures. Some owners have also reported transmission problems, such as hard shifting or slipping, which can lead to costly repairs. There have been recalls related to airbag deployment and seat belt functionality.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the transmission and potential for electrical issues. Maintaining the vehicle according to the manufacturer's recommended service schedule is crucial to mitigating these risks. Thorough inspections before purchasing a used 2017 Traverse are highly recommended, paying close attention to the air conditioning and transmission performance. Researching specific recalls and ensuring they have been addressed is also vital for long-term reliability.

How long will the 2017 Chevrolet Traverse last?

With proper maintenance, a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse can reasonably achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles. Many owners report reaching 10 years of service or more. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses often emerge in the transmission, air conditioning system, and electrical components. Regular fluid changes, timely repairs, and preventative maintenance are crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten its service life and lead to costly repairs.

The seats are hard and uncomfortable especially for someone with back problems. The seats have sides that are uncomfortable if you are on the heavier side. For long trips it gets uncomfortable due to the hardness of the seats. It's been six years since my husband purchased the vehicle and my bottom still hurts if driving for an hour or more, even my granddaughter who weights less than 100 pounds complains about the seats. The only plus besides its size is the hauling capacity. I've had issues with the electrical among other things like the sensor above the gas tank, considering its age it should not have so many issues.

I love my new car. It rides smooth and has lots of room. It is very clean and is everything I was looking for. It even came with a remote start

We got a new traverse because the old car had bad front-end and hubby wanted to make sure we ( me and the grandbabies would be safe cause I take them to school. I've had nothing but problems that started farely early. The breaks I've had to replace rotors 2 times and got new tires 3 times the air conditioning stopped working the center console started falling apart. The loose gas cap light always comes on.i have made so many complaints. I feel that if I spend that amount of money buying a brand new car it should last more than 10yr before it starts breaking down. Chevy should do a recall if you have had to do major repairs on more than 1 thing. Now the stabilitrak warning has came on. 2wks ago I had it in shop getting ac fixed I told the guy to check the front end cause something didn't feel right and they called me back saying I had nails in my tires and charged me 20 to plug them really? I have FREE tire repair at discount tires where I get my tires. Thanks that warranty isn't any good anymore. And pressure sensors were reading tires wrong so they reset them guess what drove home and it still shook now the stupid car has stabilitrak problems. Why I feel totally ripped off. I have 2 payments left and own a car that is always going to need a repair cause it was cheaply mande. I have cried so much and I'm so angry. All that money wasted. I am 55 yrs old .y hubby is 62 he can't work. Much longer and not to purchase another new car. Why do I have so much bad luck especially with cars. I can NOT afford to get more work done. I think chevy should replace it with a car that is going to help not cause more heartaches. So disappointed

2017 Chevrolet Traverse Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Chevrolet Traverse Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2017 Chevrolet Traverse competes with the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of performance, the Traverse's V6 is comparable, but some rivals offer better fuel economy. Feature-wise, it holds its own, especially in higher trims, but its infotainment system can feel dated compared to newer models from competitors. Reliability is a concern, with the Traverse generally scoring lower than the Pilot and Highlander. Price-wise, it often offers a competitive edge, especially on the used market.
Alternatives to consider include the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander for their superior reliability. The Ford Explorer offers a sportier driving experience. The Kia Telluride (if considering a newer model year) is a strong contender with a modern design and advanced features. If reliability is a top priority, the Pilot or Highlander are better choices; if budget is the primary concern and you accept potential repairs, the Traverse can be a good value.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Wagon?

The 2017 Chevrolet Traverse is ideal for large families prioritizing space and affordability over ultimate reliability or fuel efficiency. It's worth buying used if the price is right and a thorough inspection reveals no major issues, particularly with the transmission and air conditioning. Opting for a higher trim level like the Premier can enhance the ownership experience with added features, but be aware of potentially higher repair costs. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander. Purchasing a well-maintained, lower-mileage example is crucial for long-term satisfaction.

I had a passenger who was a fortune 500 executive who confirmed this for the headlight issue on January 24, 2024

I believe fortune 500 companies had a hand in this

It was necessary to replace headlights 8 times Accelerator module had to be replace 6 Driver information center had to be replace 8 time The rebuilds were no good At this time my car has been unsafe to drive because of Taacata airbag recall We were informed there could even be a risk of death if MIT became necessary for airbag deployment

No more GM for me on December 11, 2022

Beware of transmissions issues

I've owned a 2008 GMC Acadia, then a 2017 Traverse. Great for family of 4-5 with young kids. I highly recommend buying this vehicle with a warranty as both my experiences with these cara the transmissions begins to have problems after 60k. If you buy the one with more then 50k get a warranty on the trans. Please. Other then that its a great soccer mom car.

This vehicle fits my needs!

This vehicle has everything I need and is very comfortable to sit in. It has the options I need and I am hoping to have it for a long time. The price was right for the amount of mileage it has.

Good Family vehicle

This vehicle has all the room my 4 person family needs...Clean and low mileage. I am very happy with the purchase. USB ports in several locations and all the necessary bells and whistles. The 3.6l V6 with the towing package was a plus!

Lots of room. Drives like a car instead of an SUV.

Radio is trash. Steering wheel should have a little more very skinny for an SUV. All in all it’s a nice vehicle. I like the way it drives.
