Rating: 4.26
Based on 82 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse is a large crossover SUV offering seating for up to eight passengers. Part of the first generation (2009-2017), it was designed as a family-friendly alternative to minivans. Key trims included LS, LT, and LTZ. Its popularity stemmed from its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and car-like handling. New, the Traverse ranged from approximately $30,000 to $45,000 depending on trim and options.
The Good

The 2013 Traverse offers a blend of practicality and comfort. Its spacious interior and smooth ride appeal to families. The V6 engine provides adequate performance, and its relatively fuel-efficient for its size. The design, while not groundbreaking, is inoffensive and functional. It's a value proposition for those needing lots of passenger and cargo space.

The Bad

The 2013 Traverse is known for potential transmission issues, specifically hard shifting or complete failure. Electrical problems and air conditioning malfunctions are also frequently reported. Watch out for excessive oil consumption and timing chain wear, which are common concerns with this model year. Careful inspection and a thorough service history check are crucial.

What Problems Does the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse Have?

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse has a history of reported problems. Transmission issues, including hard shifting, slipping, and complete failure, are frequently cited, often requiring expensive repairs. Excessive oil consumption is another common complaint, potentially leading to engine damage if not monitored and addressed. Timing chain wear is also a concern, as the timing chain can stretch over time, causing performance issues and eventually requiring replacement.
Electrical problems, such as issues with the power windows, door locks, and infotainment system, are not uncommon. The air conditioning system is also prone to malfunctions, particularly with the compressor. Several recalls were issued for the 2013 Traverse, including concerns related to the airbag system, seat belt cables, and windshield wiper functionality. These recalls should be verified as completed before purchasing a used model.
Long-term reliability is a concern due to these issues. Regular maintenance, particularly oil changes, is crucial to mitigate the risk of oil consumption and timing chain wear. Addressing any unusual noises or shifting problems promptly can potentially prevent more significant transmission damage. Due diligence in checking the vehicle's service history and inspecting for any signs of the aforementioned problems is strongly recommended before buying a used 2013 Traverse.

How long will the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Chevrolet Traverse can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-12 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing minor repairs promptly are crucial. The Traverse's weaknesses lie in its potential for transmission problems, oil consumption, and timing chain wear. Neglecting these issues can significantly shorten its lifespan. Consistent maintenance is key to maximizing durability.

I have a 2013 Chevy Traverse that was taken care of. It has had an Alternator failure, Air Conditioner failure but overall is a fair vehicle for your money. But the other day I had a warning light saying thr transmission was overheated. The truck lost power and had to pull off road and let drivetrain cool off. Anyone know what should be done? I considered a transmission flush and transmission fluid change. Also noted that there are 4 recalls to repair safety issues. How can I find out if they have been fixed already? My registration lists truck as 4W. So do I have a 4WD or FWD? My Traverse has 199,000 miles. Should I trade in my SUV.

I haven't owned the vehicle 24 hours, tried to take it back the same day but the dealership was closed. Took it back the next day, only to find out the transmission is bad. So now, I have to get money together for car repairs. Have extended warranty but pretty sure claim will be denied due to pre existing condition, that the dealer claim they know NOTHING about.

I bought this vehicle less then 6 months ago, it was used. A 2013 Chevy traverse, since I’ve had nothing but issues. I replaced one headlight 4 months ago and the mother headlight yesterday. Was driving today and the same headlight went out! It’s becoming expensive and a hassle! Would NOT recommend this vehicle!

I have a 2013 Chevy traverse that stalled on me. First I got an error message on my dash board that said "TRACTION CONTROL OFF " then it said " ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED" and then it powered down and wouldn't start. By the way this happen on the I 95, this incident nearly cause multiple accident.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include an AM/FM/CD audio system and OnStar. Higher trims (LT and LTZ) added the MyLink infotainment system with a color touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Optional features included a navigation system, a premium Bose audio system, and rear parking sensors.
Driver-assistance features were limited, but the LTZ trim offered blind-spot monitoring. Standard safety features included antilock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags, including side-curtain airbags for all three rows. Optional safety equipment included rear parking assist.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally positive. The 2013 Traverse received an overall 5-star safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also gave the Traverse good ratings in most crash tests. However, it's important to note that safety standards and testing procedures have evolved since 2013, so modern vehicles may offer superior protection. Always verify specific crash test results from reputable sources for the most accurate information.

2013 Chevrolet Traverse Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse ranged from approximately $30,000 to $45,000, depending on the trim and options. As of late 2024, used prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Traverse has depreciated significantly due to its age and known reliability concerns. Factors affecting resale value include its mechanical condition, maintenance history, and overall cosmetic appeal. Models with lower mileage and a clean title command higher prices. The LTZ trim generally holds slightly more value due to its added features.

2013 Chevrolet Traverse Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse can be moderately costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel costs are relatively high due to its size and fuel economy. Maintenance can be expensive, especially if transmission or engine issues arise. Repairs, particularly those related to known problems like timing chain and transmission issues, can be significant. Overall, the 2013 Traverse isn't the most economical choice due to potential repair costs.

2013 Chevrolet Traverse Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Chevrolet Traverse is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse competes with SUVs like the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of performance, the Traverse's V6 engine is comparable, though some rivals offer slightly better fuel economy. Feature-wise, it's competitive, but some competitors have more advanced driver-assistance features for that model year. However, the Traverse generally falls short in reliability compared to the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander, which are known for their dependability.
The Ford Explorer offers a sportier driving experience, while the Nissan Pathfinder was redesigned in 2013, giving it a more modern interior. Price-wise, the Traverse is often slightly more affordable on the used market, reflecting its reliability concerns.
Alternatives to consider are the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander, which offer superior reliability. If budget is a major concern and you're willing to accept the risks, the Traverse can be a viable option, but a thorough inspection and budget for potential repairs are essential. The redesigned 2013 Nissan Pathfinder might also be a good alternative to look at.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Wagon?

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse is suitable for large families on a budget who need ample passenger and cargo space. However, it's crucial to acknowledge its reliability concerns. It's worth buying *only* if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history and pass a pre-purchase inspection. Be prepared for potential repairs. Avoid high-mileage examples. Due to potential maintenance costs, consider lower trims, as fixing LTZ-specific features (like the Bose sound system or power liftgate) can be costly. The 2013 Traverse represents a gamble; if you're risk-averse, consider a more reliable competitor.

Ten Years without a Single Problem

I bought an LT model new in 2013 and have driven it daily ever since. I have not had a single problem of any sort.....no repairs, service, etc. other than oil changes at the proper intervals. The interior has held up beautifully, and the exterior paint has coped quite well with being parked outside in the hot desert sun. The gas mileage is around 16 to 17 MPG, which is rather low, but it is a large vehicle. Acceleration is excellent, but there is a lag before the transmission downshifts for passing. Overall, it is one of the nicest, quietest vehicles I have ever owned.

The vehicle itself is a nice comfortable car. Highway driving it’s the best. Inner city driving it’s terrible on gas. Lucky to get 13 miles to a gallon

Great size. Comfortable ride.

Comfortable ride and highway speeds, plenty of room for family of 4. I think the engine is a little under powered for the size of the vehicle, though that's pretty minor
