Rating: 4.49
Based on 100 Owner Reviews â–¶
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse is a full-size crossover SUV known for its spacious interior and comfortable ride. Part of the Traverse's first generation (2009-2017), it offers seating for up to eight passengers. Key trims include the LS, LT, and LTZ. New, it ranged in price from roughly $31,000 to $45,000. Its popularity stems from its ample cargo space and car-like handling, making it a practical choice for families.
The Good

The 2016 Traverse offers a comfortable ride and generous passenger space (emotional appeal). Practically, it boasts a strong V6 engine for decent performance, acceptable reliability ratings, and represents a good value in the used market. Its family-friendly design and ample cargo capacity are also strong selling points. The smooth ride makes long trips enjoyable.

The Bad

Some 2016 Traverse owners have reported issues with the transmission, specifically rough shifting. The infotainment system can feel dated compared to newer vehicles. Also, fuel economy isn't the best in its class. Watch out for potential water leaks, and ensure regular maintenance to prevent costly repairs. Some early models had timing chain issues.

What Problems Does the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse Have?

The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. One common issue is related to the transmission, with some owners experiencing rough shifting or hesitation. Some reports suggest premature transmission failure, although this is not widespread. Another area of concern revolves around the air conditioning system. Some owners have reported issues with the AC compressor failing or refrigerant leaks.
Several recalls have affected the 2016 Traverse. Check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date information, but recalls have included issues with the seat belts and airbags. These are safety-related recalls and should be addressed promptly.
Long-term reliability concerns often focus on the timing chain. While not as prevalent in the 2016 model as in earlier years, it's still something to be aware of. Listen for any unusual engine noises, especially rattling sounds upon startup. Some owners have also mentioned issues with the water pump failing, leading to potential overheating. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes, can help mitigate some of these long-term concerns. The infotainment system can also exhibit glitches over time.

How long will the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse last?

With good maintenance, a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Expect 10-15 years of service with responsible ownership. Key to longevity is regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and cooling system maintenance. Durability is generally good, but weaknesses emerge over time. Transmission issues, AC compressor failures, and potential water pump leaks are areas to watch. Preventative maintenance is crucial to maximizing the Traverse's lifespan. Rust can also be a concern in colder climates.

Best Car I Have Ever Owned. Will definitely Buy Same Car Again. This car is well worth the money. It actually gets great gas mileage to be a larger vehicle
Rachel
I absolutely love my Traverse. It’s beautiful inside and out. I feel safe in this size vehicle after being in a car wreck, in a small car. The gas mileage is the only thing that would be considered a downside. Mine gets about 19 mpg.
KingAvery
Great car ride and drives smooth, I love it. And the color is new for me. Never had this color of car before it's very new for me.
Negative Owner Reviews

I purchased a 2016 Chevy traverse April 2019 from there on I have nothing but problems with this vehicle recently found out that I need a transmission within six months of purchasing the vehicle
Phill
The cam stressed in the motor. Only had the car for 10 months. I wouldn't get the extended warranty it doesn't cover it. Now I am stuck with payments for 4 years and can t sell as us. Go ing to cost 7200 for a motor.

Ride is very stiff ..especially on rough roads . Needs attention to the suspensions. Let air out of tires and still rides rough . Interior lighting reflects in side mirrors !!! This is a step down from our trade! I am reminded every time we travel ! Wish it had a key fob !

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse offers a decent array of tech and safety features. Standard tech includes a rearview camera, a 6.5-inch touchscreen (LS trim), USB port, and Bluetooth connectivity. Higher trims (LT and LTZ) offer the MyLink infotainment system with a larger touchscreen, smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were not yet standard in 2016), and navigation.
Driver-assistance features, often optional, include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. Forward collision alert and lane departure warning were also available.
Safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags. OnStar provides automatic crash response and emergency assistance.
The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse earned good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Check their respective websites for specific ratings.
Entertainment options include a premium Bose audio system available on the LTZ trim and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system for long trips. Note that technology moves quickly, so the infotainment system can feel somewhat dated compared to newer models.

2016 Chevrolet Traverse Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse ranged from approximately $31,000 to $45,000 depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices range from roughly $12,000 to $20,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Traverse has depreciated considerably. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, accident history, maintenance records, and overall condition. Higher trims (LTZ) with more features generally hold their value better than base models. Demand for family SUVs also influences resale prices.

2016 Chevrolet Traverse Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse falls in the mid-range for ownership costs. Insurance premiums are average for its class. Fuel economy is subpar, contributing to higher running costs. Maintenance is generally affordable, but potential transmission or AC repairs can be costly. Long-term ownership hinges on preventative maintenance. While not the most economical choice, responsible ownership can keep costs reasonable.

2016 Chevrolet Traverse Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse competes with the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, and Mazda CX-9. In terms of performance, the Traverse's V6 engine is competitive, but the Pilot and Highlander offer slightly better fuel economy. Feature-wise, the Traverse provides a good range of options, though its infotainment system can feel dated compared to rivals. Reliability is generally acceptable, but the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander have a stronger track record. The Ford Explorer offers a more sporty driving experience, while the Mazda CX-9 boasts a more premium interior and sharper handling.
Price-wise, the Traverse is often more affordable on the used market than the Pilot or Highlander.
Alternatives: If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot are better choices, albeit potentially more expensive. If a more engaging driving experience is desired, consider the Ford Explorer or Mazda CX-9. The Kia Sorento offers a good balance of features and value.
The Nissan Pathfinder is another competitor, though its reliability ratings are similar to the Traverse.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Wagon?

The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse is ideal for families needing ample passenger and cargo space on a budget. It's worth buying used if you prioritize interior room and affordability over the latest technology and perfect reliability. Consider the LT trim for a good balance of features and price. Have a mechanic inspect any used Traverse thoroughly, paying close attention to the transmission and AC system. A well-maintained example can provide years of reliable service for those who value practicality over outright refinement. Be aware of the potential for higher fuel costs.

I bought my LTZ as a Certified Pre Owned, already 5 Years old. I have driven it for 3.5 years and just had to pay for my first Repair - a broken motor mount. It is quiet, smooth and comfortable. I am 6' 4" and go 250 lbs so space and comfort are paramount for me, and I could not be happier.

Great car for people

It’s a great car for every day use but it could have better performance considering the engine in the car. Not gonna lie but it does ok with slight modifications to increase power but would only recommend if you’re looking for a sleeper build lol. Over all it’s fairly comfortable , has its issues but it’s ok. Had to replace the transmission due to a recall. Apart from that it has over 98k miles on the original engine. I love the fun little features with the infotainment systems and the ltz trim was just perfect It does have a Tv in the 2nd row for the little ones I would 100% recommend this car as I got this car brand new with 2 miles from factory. It’s an amazing car.

My comments on my 2016 Chevy Traverse vehicle

This is my second traverse and I’ve never liked the seats in driver & passenger seats. They are uncomfortable getting in and out of. Not much room in back once front seats are adjusted and we’re not tall or large people! The windshield wipers are always noisy & scrub windshield. We purchased traverse as there was not enough room in any of the Equinox that we looked at and drove. Now that we’re older we would not purchase traverse or equinox due to way the seats are. The seating in my 2009 Traverse were much more comfortable and easier to get in and out of as the seats were so different than 2016 ones. Now I need to get recalls completed before we sell/trade! Thanks for reading and hopefully changes will be made in Traverse for the better! I’ve had Suburban that I really liked to as it was very roomy! My husband is a die-hard Chevy-GM customer and he has never bought me anything to drive but Chevrolets to drive.
