2012 Chevrolet Traverse Review: Low Priced But Unreliable SUV With Engine Failures

Rating: 4.20
Based on 100 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse is a full-size crossover SUV, offering seating for up to eight passengers. It's part of the first generation, produced from 2009 to 2017. Key trims include the LS, LT, and LTZ. When new, pricing ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000. It stands out for its spacious interior, smooth ride, and car-like handling, making it a popular choice for families needing ample passenger and cargo space without the bulk of a traditional SUV.
The Good

The 2012 Traverse offers a comfortable ride and spacious cabin, appealing to those seeking practicality. Its V6 engine delivers adequate power for everyday driving. While not the most fuel-efficient, it provides good value for its size and capabilities. Emotionally, it offers the security and convenience of a large family vehicle without sacrificing car-like driving dynamics. Decent reliability helps to secure the practical appeal.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2012 Traverse include reported issues with the timing chain, air conditioning system, and some electrical components. Watch out for excessive oil consumption, transmission problems, and ensure regular maintenance is performed to mitigate these risks. Interior materials can feel somewhat dated compared to rivals.

What Problems Does the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse Have?

The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse has faced several frequently reported problems and recalls. One prominent issue involves the timing chain, which can stretch and cause engine problems if not properly maintained or if oil changes are neglected. Another common concern relates to the air conditioning system, particularly the compressor, which may fail prematurely. Excessive oil consumption has also been reported by some owners.
Recalls for the 2012 Traverse have included issues related to the side-impact airbags and potential problems with the seatbelt cables. These recalls should be checked to ensure any necessary repairs have been completed. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the aforementioned timing chain and air conditioning issues, as well as potential transmission problems at higher mileage. Some owners have also noted issues with the power steering system.
It's crucial to review the vehicle's maintenance history and perform a thorough inspection, including checking for any signs of timing chain noise, A/C malfunction, and transmission slippage before purchasing a used 2012 Traverse. Addressing any outstanding recalls is also essential for safety.

How long will the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse can reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching these milestones with regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs. However, neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. The timing chain, transmission, and air conditioning system are potential weak points that require attention over time. Expect potential issues with the electrical system as the vehicle ages. Long-term durability largely depends on how well the vehicle was maintained and driven throughout its life.

Love it!! its exactly what we was wanting and within our budget! Would definitely recommend this car for anyone and especially those with kids. The 3rd row makes it perfect for Friends or Family to all pile in one vehicle together and allow plenty of space for all.

This car is very well designed with comfort and safety in mind. Would buy again. Very smooth ride. Love the twin moon roofs and second row captians seats
Negative Owner Reviews

Ok, there is good things about it, like it's good looking and its roomy but that's about it. I keep up EA with all the maintenance, that being said, it's got too many issues that keep poppin up and it's never the same one. If you want a suv that you have to keep putting money into then this is for you. I have only 100k on it so it's not like alot. I will never buy anything but Toyotas or Hondas ever again. Why cant we get it right.
AngelLA
I bought my 2012 in 2014. It is currently 2019 and I have had to replace the radiator twice. It currently is sitting at Chevrolet because it is now experiencing electrical issues. $450 for them to pull the vehicle apart just to look at it because they have no clue what the issue is. All the mechanic can say is "this is odd."
Jkatshaw
This vehicle has been in the shop for repairs at least 15 times. Everything goes wrong with it, the car has reved up on its own then shut down while driving, the abs ,traction control and stabilitak light comes on causing to drive very badly, the wiring harness for all doors are corroded because they get filled with water which causes damage and now I cannot roll down my windows or lock the car. Air will not blow out of the main vents, radio works some of the time, airbag sensor light is on, etc... I cannot even afford my payments because I have to keep paying for repairs. This is a very unsafe vehicle and it should be recalled. It's a Lemon!! And I cannot return it or get anyone to finance me for a different vehicle. I should get a lawyer

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse offers a decent array of tech, entertainment, and safety features for its time. Standard features include a CD player with an auxiliary audio input, and available features range from Bluetooth connectivity to a rearview camera and rear parking sensors. Higher trims like the LTZ boast a Bose sound system. The entertainment system includes available rear-seat DVD entertainment.
Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (StabiliTrak), traction control, front-seat side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags. Optional driver-assistance features were limited, but available rearview camera and rear parking sensors added convenience.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) were generally positive. The 2012 Traverse received good overall safety ratings, indicating a safe vehicle for families. It's worth noting that specific ratings can vary slightly depending on the test methodology and trim level, so it’s best to check the most up-to-date ratings available from these organizations.

2012 Chevrolet Traverse Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices can range from around $5,000 to $15,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant due to age and potential reliability concerns. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, trim level, and location. Models with lower mileage and documented maintenance records generally command higher prices.

2012 Chevrolet Traverse Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse tends to be moderately costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel economy is not exceptional, so fuel costs can add up. Maintenance and repair expenses can be higher than average due to potential issues like timing chain problems and A/C failures. Regular maintenance is essential to mitigate potential expensive repairs. Overall, consider the potential for higher-than-average repair costs when budgeting for ownership.

2012 Chevrolet Traverse Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse competes with vehicles like the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of performance, the Traverse offers comparable power to its rivals but lags slightly in fuel efficiency. Features are generally on par with competitors, although some rivals offered more advanced driver-assistance technologies.
Reliability is where the Traverse falls short compared to the Highlander and Pilot, which are known for their strong reliability records. The Ford Explorer offers a more engaging driving experience but can also be less reliable. The Nissan Pathfinder provides similar practicality but a less refined interior.
In terms of price, the Traverse is often competitively priced on the used market. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot might be better alternatives, although they may command a higher price. If driving dynamics are more important, the Ford Explorer is a worthy consideration, understanding potential reliability trade-offs. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and budget.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Wagon?

The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse is ideal for families needing a spacious and affordable three-row SUV. It's worth buying if you prioritize interior space and passenger capacity over ultimate reliability. It's recommended to buy a used 2012 Traverse only after a thorough inspection and review of its maintenance history. Lower trims (LS, LT) may offer better value given their simpler features and potentially lower repair costs. Be prepared for potential maintenance and repair expenses. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot, even if it means a higher initial investment.

2012 Chevy Traverse 2LT

The car is great for comfort, styling, capacity, and accessories. I have a problems with the low beam and rear bulbs blowing every few months; there is oil blowback into the intake that causes the sensor to trip and the engine goes into anti-theft mode and cuts the engine power to a crawl; the heat comes on when it wants to; the ac compressor went out; the rear lift gate doesn't go all the way up, it reverses half way up and closes; the buttons for automatic windows on driver side stopped working; other than the above listed items, I love the car.

Was not informed about any recalls

I've had to take it in several times and the air bag on passenger side made a ticking noise which is annoying.the seats are not made for durable wear I had a heavy person actually break my passenger side seat where the control panel is.its all plastic..the ac unit is not working the passenger gets hot air drivers side is cold. And not to mention that I was able to look under the engine and some of the bolts are gone to hold the engine together .

BIG PILE OF JUNK.

One big pile of junk. Constant need of repairs. Chevy should be ashamed to have produced such a horrible vehicle. In about a 1 to 2 year period when hit 100000 miles... motor went $6500, a/c evaporator, cooling fan unit ($1500) ; struts; buncho of other stuff as well.. Spent between $10000 and $11500 on repairs during those 1-2 years. I was at a chevy quick oil change and they said that the 2012 was known to be a pile of junk. Again and foremost, Chevy should be ashamed of this product and cutting large check to those unfortunate enough to have purchased one. I won't buy chevy ever again.

My last Chevy

I've always been a Chevy owner, but this is my last Chevy. There's many reasons I am not happy. It's hard to access the second back seat. Seat back don't lay flat. The positioning of the battery is rediculous. I've had nothing but problems with this vehicle. ABS, Stabilitrack, All wheel drive turns off randomly. It's seems as though it's not the quality I'm used to with Chevy.

Very happy buyer

Great size family vehicle. I love the V6 and it’s very nice for its age. Well designed. Most people assume that it’s new. Very roomy for my terms and all of our stuff.

Great but has issues

I had one for 3 years (due to finances), but every time the tachometer was between 1 & 2 rpm the car would start to stutter until I got it above the 2. I had to replace the starter twice within 6 months, tires are not a common tire size (so they cost more). Transmission started slipping, got it to a shop & they wanted $5200 for a new transmission, another shop said $5000 and another said $4700. It was safe, great to drive other than the mechanical issues.
