Key trims include Base, SE, and Limited. New, prices ranged roughly from $28,000 to $38,000. Its popularity stems from its smooth ride, spacious interior, and Toyota's proven dependability. It's a family-friendly choice known for longevity.
The Good

The 2010 Toyota Highlander boasts impressive reliability and a comfortable ride, appealing to practical buyers seeking a dependable family vehicle. Its smooth V6 engine offers adequate performance. The spacious interior and user-friendly design contribute to a pleasant driving experience, evoking a sense of security and practicality for emotional buyers.

The Bad

What Problems Does the 2010 Toyota Highlander Have?

The 2010 Toyota Highlander generally enjoys a good reputation for reliability, but some issues have been reported. A common concern is water pump failure, which can lead to overheating if not addressed promptly. Some owners have also experienced issues with oil leaks, particularly as the vehicle ages. These leaks often originate from valve cover gaskets or the timing chain cover.

Regarding recalls, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls related to your specific VIN. While I don't have real-time recall data, common areas for Toyota recalls in that era often included issues with floor mats interfering with the accelerator pedal (a broader Toyota issue) and potential problems with airbag systems.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the transmission and the potential for rust in areas with heavy road salt use. Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes and rust prevention measures, can significantly mitigate these risks. Check for any unusual noises or vibrations during a test drive, as these could indicate potential mechanical problems.

How long will the 2010 Toyota Highlander last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 Toyota Highlander can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this milestone. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and addressing minor issues promptly are key to longevity.

Long-term durability is generally excellent, but weaknesses can emerge. As mentioned earlier, watch for water pump issues and oil leaks. Suspension components (struts, shocks) may need replacement after 10 years or more. Rust can be a concern in colder climates. Overall, the Highlander is known for its ability to withstand the test of time.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Toyota Highlander offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a CD player with six speakers, air conditioning, and power windows and locks. Higher trims added features like a JBL premium audio system, a sunroof, and automatic climate control.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles. Available features included Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), and anti-lock brakes (ABS). A rearview camera was optional on higher trims.

Safety features included front airbags, side-impact airbags, and side curtain airbags for all three rows.

Optional features varied by trim but could include a navigation system, a rear-seat entertainment system (DVD player), and leather upholstery.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA are generally good. It's recommended to consult these agencies' websites for specific crash test results for the 2010 model year. The Highlander typically performed well in frontal and side-impact crash tests.

2010 Toyota Highlander Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Toyota Highlander ranged from approximately $28,000 for the base model to around $38,000 for a fully equipped Limited trim. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level.

The Highlander depreciates relatively slowly compared to some competitors, thanks to Toyota's strong reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and geographical location. Models with lower mileage and a clean maintenance record command higher prices. The V6 engine and AWD also boost resale value.

2010 Toyota Highlander Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Toyota Highlander is generally considered economical to own in the long run. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for its class, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. Maintenance is relatively affordable, with readily available parts and a large network of qualified mechanics. While repairs can be more expensive than some domestic brands, the Highlander's inherent reliability helps to keep repair costs down overall. Long-term ownership is generally predictable and manageable.

2010 Toyota Highlander Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Toyota Highlander is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Toyota Highlander Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2010 Toyota Highlander competed with vehicles like the Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Chevrolet Traverse, and Ford Explorer. In terms of reliability, the Highlander generally outperformed the Explorer and Traverse. The Pilot offered similar reliability and a slightly more spacious third row. The Pathfinder offered a more rugged feel but lagged behind in fuel economy.

Regarding performance, the Highlander's V6 engine was competitive, but some rivals offered more powerful options. Feature-wise, the Highlander was well-equipped for its time, but later models of its competitors offered more advanced technology.

Price-wise, the Highlander was typically positioned in the middle of the pack. A well-maintained Honda Pilot is a good alternative, offering similar reliability and practicality. If a more budget-friendly option is needed, consider a Buick Enclave. The Ford Flex provides a unique style and spacious interior if its reliability issues are understood. Overall, the Highlander stood out due to its balance of reliability, practicality, and comfort.

Ranks #121 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Toyota Highlander a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2010 Toyota Highlander is an ideal choice for families seeking a reliable and practical mid-size SUV. It's worth buying as a used vehicle, especially if you prioritize dependability and a smooth ride. Look for models with a well-documented maintenance history and avoid those with excessively high mileage. The V6 engine is preferable for its added power and towing capacity. While the Limited trim offers more luxury, the SE trim provides a good balance of features and value. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is always recommended. Check for any outstanding recalls and service bulletins before committing to a purchase.

I purchased my 2010 Highlander in March 2011 with 5K

I purchased my 2010 Highlander in March 2011 with 5K miles. I now have 177,377 miles and never had a major repair required. Just replaced spark plugs for second time and should be good for another 75-80K miles. Thinking of trading in-not sure what to do. Oh btw: I’ve never missed a scheduled oil change in 13 years or ownership. Anyone have an opinion??????

I bought my 2010 Highlander in 2011 with 30k miles. It is the 6 cyl model with AWD and a 3rd seat. I now (4/24) have 267,000 miles on it and it runs as if it was new. I have driven it on- and off-road as well as several 5,000 round trips to CA towing trailers and it has performed flawlessly! No serious mechanical issues and the body has no rust (remarkable in MN). The key is regular factory suggested service. I have been toying with replacing it for a newer Toyota but the Toyota dealer is telling me that with continued regular service, I should get 300,000 - 350,000 miles or more without major problems from this vehicle. It is incredibly smooth on the highway and in town. I am 82 and have never had a vehicle this reliable, comfortable, or last for these many miles.

The Highlander was everything I wanted.

Did great for our family of 4 with a large dog. Great room. Very reliable. Handled well. Only disappointment was gas mileage, which was lower than my pick-up truck.

This car has been excellent to me! I have used it to move across the country and driven it every which way across the USA several times. Absolutely old faithful, comfortable, and easy to fix and clean. Still going strong at 170,000 miles!

Great Riding SUV with good get up and go!

We really like the V6 Highlander SUVs. They have great 'get up and go' and ride really nice going down the highway. Plenty of storage in the back with the seats being able to be folded down. Leg room in second row was very adequate for carrying around softball kids. Front leg room and head was very comfortable for us as well.

Most reliable car I have owned

My car fits my needs . Has plenty of leg room . It is an 8 seater. Great horse power . I love the accessories like my aux chord which I use to play my music from pandora. I just love my car.

Scrapiron

This car has met or exceeded our expectations. Over all very low maintenance and dependability. We both were very happy with the price of this Highlander.
