Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2018 Toyota Highlander is a mid-size SUV known for its reliability and family-friendly features. Part of the third generation (2014-2019), it offers a comfortable ride and ample cargo space. Key trims include the LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited, and Limited Platinum. The pricing range when new was roughly $31,000 to $48,000. It stands out for its reputation for dependability and strong resale value, making it a popular choice for families.
The Good

The 2018 Toyota Highlander offers a blend of practicality and comfort. Its V6 engine provides adequate performance, while Toyota's reputation ensures reliability. The comfortable ride and spacious interior appeal to families, and the Highlander's strong resale value offers peace of mind for the budget-conscious buyer. It's a sensible choice that doesn't skimp on comfort.

The Bad

While generally reliable, the 2018 Highlander's infotainment system can feel dated compared to rivals. The third-row seating is best suited for children or smaller adults. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission's responsiveness. Also, the base four-cylinder engine lacks power for some drivers. It's important to check for proper maintenance records.

What Problems Does the 2018 Toyota Highlander Have?

The 2018 Toyota Highlander is generally considered reliable, but some issues have been reported. Some owners have experienced issues with the automatic transmission, particularly with rough shifting or hesitation. Others have reported problems with the infotainment system, finding it slow or unresponsive.
There have been some recalls for the 2018 Highlander, including potential issues with the fuel pump, which could cause the engine to stall. It is important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls.
Long-term reliability concerns are relatively minimal, but some owners have reported issues with the paint quality, particularly chipping or fading. Also, the leather upholstery in higher trims can show wear and tear over time.
It's worth noting that most of these issues are relatively minor and don't affect a significant percentage of owners. However, it's always wise to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential problems before buying a used 2018 Highlander.

How long will the 2018 Toyota Highlander last?

With regular maintenance, a 2018 Toyota Highlander can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing 10-15 years of service. Toyotas are known for their longevity, and the Highlander is no exception. Proper oil changes, timely replacement of fluids and filters, and addressing minor repairs promptly are crucial.
Long-term durability is a strong point, but weaknesses can emerge over time. Suspension components, such as struts and bushings, may require replacement. Also, keep an eye on the cooling system and transmission for potential leaks or issues. Regular inspections can help catch these problems early.

This is my second Highlander. The first was a 2008 model and still in the family running great. This model has also served me well. I have 75,000 miles on it. I bought new tires at 60,000 and just had the battery replaced 3 weeks ago. The car runs great!

So far I love the vehicle! It is a luxury, quiet, smooth driving experience. A huge reason for choosing the Highlander was because of the Toyota reputation for quality, safety and reliability.

I wish it worked but I have had it 2 months and it is stuck at the mechanics not safe to drive. It is nice and roomy and once it is fixed I can't wait to see how it runs.

Vehicle and the brand are not trustworthy. Toyota does not care about customers. Do not be fooled by advertising. I own my car and I am paying for it, it is my third Toyota but not anymore because as soon as I finish the payments I will buy a different brand
JUST WANT TO CRY
My wife said, it’s my 50th birthday, and I am buying a car, TODAY! She wrote a check for a 2919 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. In my case, you cannot talk to the car, and if you call someone with the car phone, the people cannot hear you, and you cannot hear them. THE DEALER SAID IT DOES NOT WORK , Toyota America said it “WORKS AS DESIGNED”. So they won’t honor the warranty, and the dealer said sorry, we begged Toyota America to fix it. Now I have to go through the Lemon law BS. I swore by my last 4 Toyotas, I had 7 new fords and ford pulled the same BS, we will not fix it but admitted it was broken. I am so so sad.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Toyota Highlander offers a range of tech, entertainment, and safety features. The base LE trim includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get an 8-inch display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were *not* standard on the 2018 model, which is a drawback for some buyers. The infotainment system, while functional, can feel dated compared to newer systems.
Driver-assistance features are a highlight, with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) standard on all trims. This includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available on higher trims.
Entertainment features include a standard six-speaker audio system, with JBL audio available on higher trims. Optional features include a rear-seat entertainment system with a Blu-ray player.
In terms of safety, the 2018 Highlander earned top marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), receiving a "Top Safety Pick+" award. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a 5-star overall safety rating.

2018 Toyota Highlander Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Toyota Highlander ranged from approximately $31,000 for the base LE trim to around $48,000 for the Limited Platinum. As a used vehicle, prices currently range from around $24,000 to $35,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level.
The Highlander holds its value well due to Toyota's reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level, and whether it's a V6 or four-cylinder model. V6 models and higher trims generally command a higher price. The Highlander's low depreciation makes it an attractive option for buyers concerned about resale value.

2018 Toyota Highlander Cost of Ownership

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Toyota Highlander Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2018 Toyota Highlander competes with the Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, and Chevrolet Traverse. In terms of reliability, the Highlander often outperforms its rivals, especially the Explorer and Traverse. The Pilot offers similar reliability and a more spacious third row.
Feature-wise, the Highlander is competitive, but the infotainment system lags behind some rivals. The Pathfinder and Traverse offer more cargo space, while the Explorer offers a sportier driving experience. Price-wise, the Highlander is generally in the middle of the pack.
For performance, the Explorer's optional turbocharged engines offer more power, but the Highlander's V6 is adequate for most needs. The Traverse offers a more comfortable ride, while the Pilot provides a more engaging driving experience.
Alternatives to the Highlander include the Honda Pilot (similar reliability and space) and the Mazda CX-9 (more stylish and fun to drive, but less cargo space). If reliability is paramount, the Highlander or Pilot are excellent choices. If you prioritize space, the Traverse might be a better fit.

Ranks #68 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Toyota Highlander a Good Wagon?

The 2018 Toyota Highlander is an ideal choice for families seeking a reliable and safe mid-size SUV. It's worth buying, especially as a used vehicle, given its strong resale value and proven dependability. It's a smart buy for those prioritizing reliability and longevity over cutting-edge technology or sporty handling.
The XLE trim offers a good balance of features and value. Avoid the base LE trim if you want more features. A thorough inspection is recommended before purchasing any used vehicle. Overall, the 2018 Highlander is a practical and sensible choice that should provide years of reliable service.

Vehicle I loved is now a regret

I loved this vehicle until I tried to transport 3 grandchildren in it. I bought it because of them for its safety and reliability. But I have tried every possible car seat configuration and unless you are 100 lb to fit between the seats without moving them, it is a nightmare! You think you have it figured out then there isn’t a tether attachment for that seat or there aren’t anchors for that seat. There are 3 tether attachments and 3 sets of anchors so you either stand on your head to get the kids in (and then the one in the back has very little room for his feet) or you keep one rear facing (no tether, use the seat belt instead of anchors) for 3 across the middle seat, until one of them gets big enough to change the rear facing out for a booster. The only other way is to make sure you buy one with middle seat captain chairs! Cautionary tale I wish someone had told me. This has turned my purchase of this vehicle into a regret.

Mediocre

Poor handling and loose steering. Uncomfortable ride, noisy. 5000 lb towing capacity is false advertising because car is not wired for trailer brakes. 3rd row seat is midget-sized.

Comfortable ride, lot's of leg room and plenty of space for the kids, the dog and everything else. Smooth drive, quiet interior and lots of places to put things. I highly recommend...and I've owned a few vehicles by multiple companies.
