The Good
The 2019 Toyota Highlander boasts excellent reliability and a comfortable ride, appealing to practical buyers. Its V6 engine offers adequate performance. The spacious interior and available advanced safety features add to its appeal. The Highlander's reputation for holding its value makes it a smart choice for those seeking long-term ownership and peace of mind, giving emotional assurance.
The Bad
The 2019 Highlander's weaknesses include a somewhat bland interior design and a smaller third-row seat compared to some competitors. The infotainment system, while functional, can feel dated. Base models lack some desirable features. Be mindful of potential transmission issues, which some owners have reported. Evaluate the infotainment system response time during a test drive.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2019 Toyota Highlander Have?
Recalls for the 2019 model year have been issued. One prominent recall related to fuel pump failures, which could cause the engine to stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Ensure any used model you're considering has had this recall addressed.
Long-term reliability is generally excellent. However, like any vehicle, regular maintenance is crucial. Pay attention to fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) and brake inspections. While the Highlander is known for its durability, neglecting maintenance can lead to problems down the road. Specifically, monitor for any unusual noises from the engine or transmission, and address them promptly. The 2019 model benefits from Toyota's established engineering, minimizing widespread chronic issues.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are a highlight. Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) is standard on all trims and includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beams. Higher trims offer blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors.
Safety features include eight airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. The 2019 Highlander earned excellent crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick. Optional features include a bird's eye view camera and a panoramic sunroof. The available driver easy speak feature transmits the driver's voice to the rear passengers through the speakers.

How Does the 2019 Toyota Highlander Compare to Other Wagon?
In terms of performance, the Explorer offers more powerful engine options. Feature-wise, the Telluride boasts a more advanced infotainment system. Pricing for the Highlander is competitive but can be higher than the Traverse. The Pilot is a similar alternative, offering a good balance of features and reliability. If reliability is the top priority, the Highlander is a strong choice. If a more modern interior and advanced features are desired, the Telluride is worth considering. If performance is paramount, the Explorer is a better fit. Each SUV has its strengths and weaknesses, and the best choice depends on individual needs and preferences. Evaluate the third-row space; the Traverse offers a notably larger space compared to others.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Toyota Highlander a Good Wagon?

Scary DriveScary ride on the highway with rain. Tires are not wide enough. Window noise when driving. Second row slides out and hits driver seat if not put back correctly. Compared to our 2019 Ford Explorer, the Highlander sucks.

Decent car for smaller drivers.Bought this car for my wife new in 2019. We have 2 little ones. It’s a decent family car. But I am 6’3†260lbs. This car isn’t designed for big and tall people. Seats are hard. Sun visor doesn’t cover enough of the side window and I end up with afternoon sun in my face. The climate control dials are slick and hard for me to grip to twist. Infotainment system seems dated. Cup holders suck. The adaptive cruise control rode the brakes down a hill and now it shakes when you apply the brakes (fixed now with new set of aftermarket rotors). Interior door panel squeaks when my leg rests against it. But overall it’s a decent car, just a little overrated. I’d say if it wasn’t for Toyota having a reputation for reliability I wouldn’t have bought it or kept it. I’d say if you’re over 6’ and this is your only car… pass.

A great riding SUV and very reliable.I traded in my 2016 RAV4 Limited for the Highlander XLE. Primarily for the ride. We had to give up some features such as seat positioning and closeness sensors available on the Rav4. The 2019 Highlander has a V6 that is well reported on and gives us the performance we need. Our ride has definitely improved on the Highlander.

Total disappointment in interior quality. For the most part I’am happy with the unit. My main concern is the material on dash lifting at seam. Dealer says that only fix is to replace entire dash assembly. They indicated replacement may create squeaks & rattles. So my choice is live with imperfections or possible rattles. I have owned many Toyota’s over the years & have been very happy with them. Not the case this time, very disappointed in the quality & will look elsewhere for our next purchase.

Buy this car with your eyes closedI used to own the Infiniti QX60 and loved it in every way. Had to get rid of it because of the famous transmission cvt problems so I got a Toyota. Aside from the interior which is not super sophisticated as the Infiniti, Toyota is a very reliable car. I know engine will always start and the car will always perform. Very comfortable and mileage is great for a V6! Toyota is the best! Everybody else is just an mature.

Perfect for long road trips!I traded in an Infiniti Q50 Red Sport which I loved but lacked the size and storage for a move from California to Texas. I bought this 2019 Highlander with slightly over 20k miles on it. Beautiful copper color, great interior. Two days later we were on our way to Texas with 2 dogs and a whole bunch of stuff in the back. Cargo space is top notch and after 30 hours and 2k miles it exceeded my expectations! Great power and gets great mileage, it was on Eco mode at 75/80 on the freeway going through CA, AZ, NM and Texas. I'm 5'3 and my friend is 6'1 and we both found it very comfortable and easy to drive. My fav feature is the radar cruise control: Even at a high rate of speed it would slow down everytime a semi or car would move over and that happened ALL THE TIME then speed back up like I was doing it. I was blown away. I wish I got the presets and running boards but otherwise, I'm thrilled with this Highlander; it won't be my last Toyota.
