The 2008 Toyota Highlander is a mid-size crossover SUV, part of the second generation (2008-2013). It's known for its blend of car-like handling with SUV practicality. Key trims included the Base, Sport, and Limited. New, the pricing ranged approximately from $28,000 to $36,000. Its popularity stems from Toyota's reputation for reliability, its spacious interior, and available third-row seating, making it a practical family vehicle.
The Good

The 2008 Highlander offers a smooth ride and ample power for everyday driving. Toyota's renowned reliability provides peace of mind. Comfortable seating and a well-designed interior enhance the driving experience. Practical buyers appreciate the fuel efficiency and strong resale value. Emotionally, owners enjoy the sense of security and versatility it provides.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include potential oil consumption issues in higher mileage vehicles. The third-row seating is cramped and best suited for children. What Problems Does the 2008 Toyota Highlander Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Toyota Highlander include excessive oil consumption, particularly in higher mileage V6 models. Some owners have reported issues with cracking dashboards, especially in warmer climates. The electronic stability control (VSC) system has occasionally been a source of problems, with sensors malfunctioning. There have also been reports of water leaks into the cabin, often due to clogged sunroof drains.

Recalls for the 2008 Highlander included issues related to the accelerator pedal potentially becoming stuck and floor mats interfering with the accelerator. These recalls were part of a larger Toyota recall campaign.

Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the transmission and potential for premature wear in the suspension components. Rust can also be a factor in northern climates, especially on the undercarriage. Regularly checking and maintaining fluid levels, particularly oil, is crucial for mitigating some of these issues. Addressing any warning lights or unusual noises promptly can also help prevent more significant problems down the road. It's advisable to check the vehicle's history for any past recalls or service records before purchasing.

How long will the 2008 Toyota Highlander last?

With good maintenance, a 2008 Toyota Highlander can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing 15-20 years of service. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely repairs, is critical.

Long-term durability strengths include the robust engine and transmission (with proper care). Weaknesses often emerge in the suspension components, which may require replacement over time. As mentioned before, oil consumption can become a problem in high mileage engines. Addressing rust prevention is vital, especially in regions with harsh winters. Overall, the Highlander is known for its longevity if properly maintained.

This car met all my needs and take me to every where I wanna go.. it’s really a good bye.. thanks to Big John and his team Toyota ..
Love2Drive
Above everything else, the most reliable vehicle I ever owned. Other than consumable (brakes, rotors, filters, fluids, etc.), not a thing needs to be replaced. Should be good for another 100K miles at least (currently @ 140K miles). Comfortable ride, precise handling, powerful engine, smart instrument panel design, what more can you ask for?
Jose
powerfull, easy to drive, plenty of room, exterior design great. I buy used car under 7500 miles, so far everything is fine, great cars for family.
Negative Owner Reviews
lmao XD
Owned one and it had too many issues to count. TPMS light randomly on, engine light sometimes on, water pump blew with not even 90k, jerky trans and many times would not start for the life of it. Also may I add the engine bay is unreasonably tight and the front of the car had to come off for the water pump.
Jones
Listed a vehicle that had an accident. Drove 3 hrs only to find that I was lied to. Do buy from these crooks.

The Toyota Highlander is as good as it gets in it's segment. Comfortable, reliable, and I think nice looking. As a sales rep for 40 years, I have driven crazy miles (30,000) per year and this is the finest experience I have had in a vehicle. 110,000 miles with not as much as a knob go wrong.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Toyota Highlander offered a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a CD player with six speakers, air conditioning, and power windows and locks. Higher trims offered optional features like a JBL premium audio system, a navigation system (often considered outdated by today's standards), and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

In terms of safety, all 2008 Highlanders came standard with anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (VSC), traction control, and a suite of airbags, including front, side, and curtain airbags. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but the VSC system helped maintain stability in slippery conditions.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) were generally good. The Highlander earned a "Good" rating in the moderate overlap front crash test and side impact test. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 5-star rating for frontal crash protection for both driver and passenger and 5 stars for side crash protection. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2008.

2008 Toyota Highlander Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Toyota Highlander ranged from approximately $28,000 to $36,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $6,000 to $12,000, but can vary depending on condition, mileage, and location.

The Highlander has historically held its value well due to Toyota's reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and whether it's a 4-cylinder or V6 model. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command the highest prices. V6 models are generally more desirable than 4-cylinder models due to their increased power and towing capacity.

2008 Toyota Highlander Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2008 Toyota Highlander are typically moderate, reflecting its safety record and commonality. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially for the 4-cylinder model. Maintenance costs are generally low, thanks to Toyota's reliability. Repairs can be more expensive if major components fail, but routine maintenance is affordable. Long-term ownership costs are considered economical compared to some other SUVs, making it a relatively affordable choice for a used vehicle.

Summary Toyota IS Recalling 90,189 MY 2008 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid Passenger Vehicles Equipped With A Third ROW Seat. These Vehicles Fail TO Conform TO THE Requirements OF Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard NO. 208, "occupant Crash Protection." THE Non-Driver Designated Seating Positions (Dsp) ON These Vehicles IS Equipped With Seat Belt Assemblies That Have A Feature That Converts THE Retractor From AN Emergency Locking Retractor (Elr) TO AN Automatic Locking Retractor (alr). THE Belts Convert TO THE ALR Mode After THE Webbing HAS Been Fully Withdrawn From THE Retractor. THE System IS Designed SO That AS THE Belt IS Released Into THE Retractor, THE System Remains IN THE ALR Mode SO That A Child Restraint System (crs) CAN BE Tightly Secured.
Consequence However, FOR THE Two Third ROW Dsp's ON These Vehicles, THE ALR Mode Deactivates Before THE Webbing IS Fully Retracted, SO That IT Will NOT Lock When Certain Rear-Facing Crs's That Have A Short Seat Belt Routing Path ARE Installed IN THE Vehicle. This CAN Allow THE Seat Belt Webbing TO Spool OUT During Normal Driving Maneuvers, Which Could Affect THE Stability OF A Child Restraint Installed AT Those Seating Positions. AS Such, This Could Discourage THE USE OF A Child Restraint and IN THE Event OF A Crash, THE Child MAY NOT BE Adequately Protected Possibly Resulting IN Injury.
Remedy Dealers Will Install A Newly Designed Seat Belt Component Free OF Charge. THE Recall IS Expected TO Begin ON or About December 18, 2008. Owners MAY Contact Toyota AT 1-800-331-4331.

The 2008 Toyota Highlander competed against the Honda Pilot, Nissan Murano, Chevrolet Traverse, and Ford Edge. In terms of reliability, the Highlander and Pilot were generally considered top performers. The Murano offered a more stylish design but lagged in cargo space and practicality. The Traverse provided more space but wasn't as fuel-efficient. The Ford Edge offered a sportier driving experience but didn't have a third row.

Feature-wise, the Highlander offered a solid set of standard and optional equipment. The Pilot had a more spacious third row, while the Murano had a more upscale interior. Price-wise, the Highlander was competitive within its class.

Alternatives to the 2008 Highlander include the Honda Pilot for its spaciousness and reliability, or a newer, slightly used Toyota Highlander (2011+) for updated features and potentially lower mileage. If cargo space is a primary concern, the Chevrolet Traverse might be a better choice, but be aware of its reliability track record compared to Toyota. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual needs and priorities.

Ranks #135 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Toyota Highlander a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Toyota Highlander is ideal for families seeking a reliable and practical mid-size SUV. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if you prioritize reliability and affordability. It's particularly attractive if you find a well-maintained example with a detailed service history. The V6 models offer better performance and towing capacity. Avoid examples with high mileage and signs of neglect. Pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended to check for potential oil consumption or other common issues. Consider later model years (2011+) if your budget allows, as they offer updated features and potentially lower mileage.

My mother had this car for 8 years and it was quite uncomfortable and unreliable. Toyota cut so many corners and there are so many points for failure. Not to mention the interior is very fragile and degrades too easily.

not a good car no sir

Owned one and it had too many issues to count. TPMS light randomly on, engine light sometimes on, water pump blew with not even 90k, jerky trans and many times would not start for the life of it. Also may I add the engine bay is unreasonably tight and the front of the car had to come off for the water pump.

Unhappy with paint JOB on December 7, 2023

Terrible job paint from factory!!!!!

I bought this car new in 2008. I have nothing bad to say except the paint start flaking after about 5 years. I should have taken to dealer over paint issue. My car only has 65,000 miles and paint is completely gone. I am in the process of a new paint job. Seems my issue was the clear coat in the paint. I have owned 6 other Toyotas, all bought new. This is only 1 with this issue!

Really good car

My highlander has 87,000 miles and is good as new. Never had any mechanical issues. Just had it detailed and it looks like new. Still has original brakes which have some miles remaining!

Best combination of all, the most reliable vehicle

Above everything else, the most reliable vehicle I ever owned. Other than consumable (brakes, rotors, filters, fluids, etc.), not a thing needs to be replaced. Should be good for another 100K miles at least (currently @ 140K miles). Comfortable ride, precise handling, powerful engine, smart instrument panel design, what more can you ask for?
