Rating: 4.21
Based on 48 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Toyota Matrix is a compact hatchback, essentially a wagon version of the Corolla. Produced from 2003 to 2014, the 2007 model year falls within the first generation. Key trims included the base, XR, and XRS. New, they ranged from around $15,000 to $20,000. Its popularity stemmed from Toyota reliability, cargo versatility, and fuel efficiency, making it a practical choice for many.
The Good

The 2007 Toyota Matrix offers exceptional reliability and fuel efficiency (practical appeal). Its hatchback design provides surprising cargo space and utility. It delivers adequate performance for daily driving, while some find the sporty XRS trim appealing (emotional appeal). Overall, it's a great value for a reliable and versatile vehicle.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2007 Toyota Matrix include its somewhat bland interior and potential for rust in colder climates. The base engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. Listen for unusual noises from the automatic transmission. Check for oil consumption issues on higher mileage examples. Overall comfort isn't the greatest either.

What Problems Does the 2007 Toyota Matrix Have?

Frequently reported problems with the 2007 Toyota Matrix often revolve around excessive oil consumption, particularly in models equipped with the 2.4L (2AZ-FE) engine. This issue can lead to premature engine wear and failure if not monitored and addressed. Another common concern is rust, especially in areas where road salt is used extensively during winter. Check the undercarriage, rocker panels, and wheel wells for signs of corrosion.

Recalls for the 2007 Toyota Matrix included issues related to floor mat entrapment of the accelerator pedal and potential for faulty valve springs, which could cause engine stalling. It's crucial to verify that any applicable recalls have been addressed by a previous owner. Long-term reliability concerns primarily involve the aforementioned oil consumption and rust issues. Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, so it's wise to have it inspected before purchasing a used model. Early models (2003-2005) experienced similar issues, and some reports cite issues with the mass airflow sensor requiring replacement.

How long will the 2007 Toyota Matrix last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 Toyota Matrix can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles with regular servicing. However, long-term durability hinges on consistent oil changes (addressing the potential oil consumption issue), rust prevention, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes, tires, and belts. Weaknesses over time include the aforementioned oil consumption, rust, and potential for transmission issues. Neglecting these can significantly shorten the lifespan of the vehicle. Adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule significantly enhances its longevity.

Received car from estate settlement. Minor issues easily corrected and have put almost 20,000 miles on it with no significant issues. Scheduled maintenance doesn’t reveal any hidden problems.

Got this car last spring and loved it! Great on gas and hoped it would last me for a long time. It had 230,000 km on it and then all of a sudden the tranny went on it. Mine is a manual transmission and I thought it was the clutch at first. So I traded it in for a Nissan Altima, which was a nightmare. I wanted my baby back so bad. So a few months later, I saw the guy I traded it in to had it up for sale for more than I paid for it! I messaged him and told him I wanted to trade back. He did, thankfully and I couldn't be more happy to be reunited with the little car! Fun little car to drive. I had no other problem ever other than the tranny, which I hear is common for that year. Hope I have no more problems with the tranny though.

After few years of usage, the car hard start. It gives electrical issue that affect the car performance. The car usually failed to start when hot due to such impact. The car wiper sometimes work on it own. Lastly, the car consume more fuel as it aged due to usage.

This is the most uncomfortable car I have ever owned.. also the noiseiest car i have ever owned. you hear all the road noise.. poor insulation.. i took it to the dealer and the could not find anything wrong. sounded like you had a window slightly open or a leak around the door. on the positive side you get good gas mileage.. computer had to be replaced under warranty period. so no problem. price is ok but not fantastic would not buy again.

I have heard that the toyota Matrix is about as good as the Corilla but i thoguht wrong. The problems started from day 2. The engine wouldn't start. So i took it to the back to the dealership. They said there was nothing wrong with the car but i knew they where lying. Then the radio was broking. that sucked. I thought this car would be really great but it wasn't. so i'm dying to get rid of this car. Maybe I can sell it to my friend down in Long Beach

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Toyota Matrix offered fairly basic tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard features included a CD player with AM/FM radio. Higher trims might include an upgraded audio system with more speakers. There were no built-in driver-assistance features like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring.

Safety features included standard front airbags, side airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Electronic Stability Control (VSC) was an optional feature, adding another layer of safety. Optional features included a sunroof, cruise control, and remote keyless entry.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show the 2007 Matrix performing reasonably well in frontal and side impact tests. However, ratings can vary depending on the specific test and model configuration. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted crash tests, and their ratings provide further insights into the vehicle's safety performance. These ratings should be consulted for a comprehensive understanding of the car's safety capabilities. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2007.

2007 Toyota Matrix Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Toyota Matrix ranged from approximately $15,000 to $20,000 depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant, but that makes it an affordable used option. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (rust is a major detractor), maintenance history, and trim level (XRS models often command a slightly higher price). A clean title and documented service records positively impact resale value.

2007 Toyota Matrix Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Toyota Matrix is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety record and affordability. Fuel efficiency is good, especially with the 1.8L engine. Maintenance is relatively inexpensive, with readily available and affordable parts. Repair costs are also generally low, assuming major issues like excessive oil consumption are addressed early. Long-term ownership costs are reasonable, making it a budget-friendly option, but be mindful of potential rust repairs, which can become costly.

2007 Toyota Matrix Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Toyota Matrix is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Toyota Matrix Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2007 Toyota Matrix competed with vehicles like the Honda Civic Si hatchback, Mazda3 hatchback, and Scion xB. In terms of reliability, the Matrix and Civic are generally considered top-tier, surpassing the Mazda3 and Scion xB. Performance-wise, the Civic Si offered a sportier driving experience compared to the Matrix's base engine, while the Matrix XRS provided a similar level of performance. The Mazda3 struck a balance between sporty handling and everyday practicality. Features were comparable across the models, but the Matrix leaned towards a more practical and less feature-rich approach than the Mazda3. Price-wise, the Matrix was often competitively priced, offering good value for its reliability and versatility.

Similar alternatives include the Toyota Corolla (for a sedan version of the Matrix) and the Pontiac Vibe (essentially the same car as the Matrix, but with slightly different styling). Depending on individual needs and preferences, the Mazda3 might be a better choice for those prioritizing driving dynamics and features, while the Civic Si appeals to those seeking a sportier experience. If reliability and practicality are paramount, the Matrix remains a strong contender.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Toyota Matrix a Good Hatchback?

The 2007 Toyota Matrix is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and versatile hatchback for daily commuting and light cargo hauling. It's worth buying as a used car, especially if a well-maintained example can be found with documented service history. Avoid models with excessive rust or signs of neglect. The XR trim offers a good balance of features and affordability, while the XRS provides a sportier driving experience but may be less fuel-efficient. Ensure any applicable recalls have been addressed before purchase. If reliability and practicality are your top priorities, the 2007 Toyota Matrix is a solid choice, provided you're aware of its potential weaknesses and inspect it thoroughly before buying.

Found a low mileage old Matrix...and love it!

Comfy, a bit of road noise but overly reliable and the engine revs QUICK almost like a motorcycle. I have a manual trans and its actually a blast to drive what is in effect a corolla station wagon!

Dependable and very practical. Gets the job done.

This is a practical car that drives and handles well. Much more fun than the Corolla on which it was based. A great capability is that the back seats when down provide a huge, completely flat cargo area behind the front seats. This area is covered in a very durable plastic. It has cargo tie-downs. You can even extend this area further by putting down the front passenger seat, which also has a durable back. This is why the car was sold as a CUV - compact utility vehicle.

extremely reliable car, lots of space

This car is in great condition. Good mileage, usually between 30-33 mpg. It's a hatchback - you can fold down back seats for a lot of storage space. Great for road trips! Easy to drive.
