Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Toyota Matrix is a compact, versatile hatchback designed with practicality and reliability in mind. As a successor to the Corolla wagon, it offers a blend of car-like handling and SUV-like cargo space. Key trims included the base model and the XRS, with an emphasis on sporty features. Model years span from 2003-2014. A new 2009 Matrix would have cost between $16,000 and $22,000. Its blend of affordability, fuel efficiency, and Toyota's reputation for dependability made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2009 Toyota Matrix excels in reliability and fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. Its hatchback design offers versatility for cargo. The sporty XRS trim provides a more engaging driving experience, satisfying emotional desires for fun. It's a comfortable and affordable option for those seeking a dependable and versatile vehicle.

The Bad

The 2009 Toyota Matrix can suffer from excessive oil consumption, especially in later years. Some owners have reported issues with the water pump and mass airflow sensor. The interior materials can feel cheap, and the base engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. Rust can be an issue in colder climates.

What Problems Does the 2009 Toyota Matrix Have?

The 2009 Toyota Matrix, particularly those with the 2.4L engine (2AZ-FE), has been known to experience excessive oil consumption. This issue can lead to engine damage if not monitored and addressed. Some owners have reported that the oil consumption becomes noticeable after 80,000 miles. There have been recalls related to floor mat entrapment, which can cause unintended acceleration. Water pump failures and mass airflow sensor problems have also been reported by some owners. These issues are not as widespread as the oil consumption problem but are still worth noting.

Long-term reliability concerns include rust, especially in areas with road salt. The suspension components, such as struts and shocks, may need replacement over time, depending on driving conditions and mileage. While Toyota generally has a good reputation for reliability, the 2009 Matrix is not without its potential issues, and a thorough inspection is recommended before purchasing a used model. Checking the vehicle's history for recalls and past repairs is also crucial.

How long will the 2009 Toyota Matrix last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Toyota Matrix can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report using them reliably for 15+ years. Key to longevity is regular oil changes (especially monitoring oil levels due to potential consumption issues), timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires, and addressing any cooling system issues promptly. Weaknesses over time include potential rust in northern climates, deterioration of suspension components, and possible engine issues related to oil consumption. Proper care greatly extends its lifespan.

So comfortable to drive. Stealing wheel was smooth and easier to turn. Very nice and Affordable car. I will recommend anyone to buy this car because it’s really comfortable and the chairs are soft.

WATCH OUT!! The 2009 Matrix with the 2.4L i4 (2AZ FE) was assembled with bad piston rings that will cause excessive oil consumption, some owners reporting multiple quarts every 1-2k miles. Toyota did a limited service bulletin (TSB T-SB-0030-15) but not all of the engines have been rebuilt. If buying a 2009 Toyota with the 2.4L 2AZ FE, make sure this rebuild has been completed!

Extremely practical vehicle with lots of apace without being an SUV. Not exciting to drive, but it will get you there

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Toyota Matrix came with relatively basic technology for its time. Standard features included a CD player with AM/FM radio and an auxiliary audio input jack. Higher trims might have included an upgraded audio system with satellite radio capability. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning available.

Safety features included standard front airbags, side airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was also available. Optional features included a sunroof and keyless entry.

Crash test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally good. The IIHS gave the 2009 Matrix a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact tests. NHTSA gave it 4 out of 5 stars in frontal crash tests and 5 out of 5 stars in side crash tests. These ratings should be verified with the specific agency directly for accuracy, though. Overall, the 2009 Matrix prioritized basic safety and entertainment over cutting-edge technology.

2009 Toyota Matrix Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Toyota Matrix ranged from approximately $16,000 to $22,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $9,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Matrix has depreciated considerably over time, as expected for a vehicle of its age. Factors affecting resale value include its overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of any known issues, like excessive oil consumption. A well-maintained Matrix with lower mileage will command a higher price.

2009 Toyota Matrix Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Toyota Matrix is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety ratings and practicality. Fuel economy is decent, especially with the 1.8L engine. Maintenance costs are generally affordable, as Toyota parts are readily available. However, potential repairs related to oil consumption or other common issues can increase long-term costs. Overall, it's a relatively inexpensive car to keep running, assuming you address potential issues promptly.

2009 Toyota Matrix Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Toyota Matrix is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Toyota Matrix Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2009 Toyota Matrix competed with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Mazda3, and Pontiac Vibe (which was essentially the same car as the Matrix, built in the same factory). In terms of reliability, the Matrix and Vibe were strong contenders, benefiting from Toyota's reputation. The Honda Civic offered a more refined driving experience and a slightly better interior, but could be more expensive. The Mazda3 provided a sportier driving experience but might not be as reliable as the Toyota.

Features were comparable across the board, with similar levels of standard and optional equipment. Price-wise, the Matrix was generally competitive, often undercutting the Civic slightly.

Alternatives to consider would be the Toyota Corolla (for similar reliability in a sedan), the Honda Fit (for more compact versatility), or the Mazda3 (for a sportier drive). The Pontiac Vibe is a very similar alternative and might be available at a lower price, assuming it has been well-maintained. The Scion xB also offers a similar boxy versatility with Toyota reliability. All depends on individual priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Toyota Matrix a Good Sedan?

The 2009 Toyota Matrix is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and practical hatchback. It's a good choice for students, commuters, or small families needing cargo space. It's worth buying if you find a well-maintained example with a clean service history and pre-purchase inspection, paying close attention to potential oil consumption issues. The 1.8L engine is likely more reliable in the long run than the 2.4L. Avoid examples with significant rust or signs of neglect. If you need a basic, dependable vehicle, the 2009 Matrix is a solid option; just be aware of its potential weaknesses.

Great car drive and also great to haul just about

Great car drive and also great to haul just about anything Small to mid sized since the back seats fold all the way down. And it gets good Gas MPG as well.

WATCH OUT FOR THE 2.4L

Great Little Hot Hatchback

I've owned my 2009 Matrix XRS since 2008 and it has been a great & reliable car that has only required regular maintenance to keep it going. I get 28-30mpg on the highway and even though I am 6'3", I am very comfortable in the driver's seat. My one complaint is the high performance tires that come on the XRS trimline are expensive and wear out much more quickly than the recommended ~40-50K mile range. I've driven my Matrix 108K miles and plan on keeping it for much much longer.

Love this car!

This car is perfect for college students or new drivers. Super easy to drive. Yet still fits people in back seats! Able to fill tank with $30-35$. Nice trunk

Matrix Vibe

The Matrix and Vibe are car clones. Same interior, engine, controls, etc. Not much difference between a 2005 and a 2009. But all are good cars.
