What Problems Does the 2010 Toyota Matrix Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 Toyota Matrix are generally not widespread, but some issues have surfaced. One notable concern involves excessive oil consumption, primarily affecting models with the 2.4L engine. This can lead to engine damage if oil levels are not regularly monitored and maintained. Some owners have reported that Toyota addressed this issue under warranty, but it's crucial to check the vehicle's history for any related repairs.

Another area of concern is the potential for rust, particularly in regions where salt is used on roads during winter. Inspecting the undercarriage, rocker panels, and wheel wells is crucial before purchasing a used Matrix. Minor electrical issues, such as problems with power windows or door locks, have also been reported by some owners.

Regarding recalls, it's important to check the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. While specific recalls may vary, common Toyota recalls often involve issues like accelerator pedal entrapment (though this was more prevalent in earlier models) and airbag malfunctions. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and inspections, is essential for mitigating potential long-term reliability concerns.

How long will the 2010 Toyota Matrix last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 Toyota Matrix can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this milestone with regular servicing. Years of service can extend well beyond 10-15 years with diligent care. Long-term durability is a strong point, although as vehicles age, wear items like suspension components, brakes, and hoses will require replacement. The aforementioned potential for excessive oil consumption in the 2.4L engine is a weakness that can shorten engine life if not monitored closely. Rust is also a significant long-term concern, especially in colder climates.
Positive Owner Reviews
Paul C.
I really like my Matrix-S. Using no-ethanol gasoline is recommended for optimum performance. It is able to fit 8-foot long items inside with the passenger seat folded down. I am fairly tall, so the little bit of extra bit of headroom I get with the sunroof is nice. With regular, recommended maintenance, I haven’t had any issues or breakdowns. [knock on wood] If you have a chance and if it’s the right fit, definitely pick one up.

Large trunk. Good control. No engine noise. Good performance car. Solid on the ground. Turns corners well. Starts smoothly. Keyless entry. Very sporty. Very good on fuel consumption.
JandC
Reliability was our biggest concern. This didn?t disappoint.i would have liked more luxury inside, sunroof and/or leather but this car served our needs well.
Negative Owner Reviews
Scott
The 2010 Toyota Matrix S is a good car!! Warning watch out for OIL CONSUMPTION issues, mine started at 60,000 miles, i've always had to check the oil and put oil in there, i've always had the oil changes at maintained 5,000 miles. I got 202,000 miles out of it, until I started having transmission issues now!! it's still running now, not sure for how long it will last!!
Never a Toyota again
Sooooooo many recalls and the selling sticker on the vehicle at the time of my purchase stated KNEE AIRBAGS which is why I bought it instead of a Subaru. However 3 months of owning this matrix I get a letter stating that the air bags did not exist and that the sticker was in correct. I did not like the design at all because it has several flaws.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Toyota Matrix's built-in tech and features were relatively basic by today's standards, but adequate for its time. Standard entertainment features included a CD player with an auxiliary audio input. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems with more speakers. Navigation was not a common factory-installed option, though aftermarket solutions were available. Driver-assistance features were minimal, with no advanced systems like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning available.

Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and front and side airbags. Optional features included side curtain airbags for enhanced head protection.

Crash-test ratings for the 2010 Toyota Matrix were generally good. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded it four or five stars in most crash tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it a "Good" rating in its moderate overlap front crash test. It's important to check specific ratings for different crash scenarios on the NHTSA and IIHS websites for a comprehensive assessment of its safety performance. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2010.

2010 Toyota Matrix Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Toyota Matrix ranged in price from approximately $16,000 to $21,000 depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, varying based on condition, mileage, and location. The Matrix has depreciated significantly, but its Toyota badge helps it retain value better than some competitors. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, documented maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of desirable features like AWD. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices.

2010 Toyota Matrix Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Toyota Matrix is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 1.8L engine. Maintenance is relatively straightforward and affordable, with readily available parts. Repairs are generally infrequent and not overly expensive. The Matrix's reliability contributes to lower long-term ownership costs compared to some less dependable vehicles. However, addressing potential oil consumption issues in the 2.4L engine is crucial to avoid costly repairs.

2010 Toyota Matrix Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Toyota Matrix is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Toyota Matrix Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2010 Toyota Matrix competed against vehicles like the Honda Civic Hatchback, Mazda3 Hatchback, and Nissan Versa. In terms of reliability, the Matrix generally scores well, often exceeding the Nissan Versa. The Honda Civic Hatchback is also known for reliability, offering a similar level of dependability. Performance-wise, the Mazda3 Hatchback provides a more engaging driving experience, while the Matrix prioritizes practicality and fuel efficiency. Feature-wise, the base models are fairly basic across the board; higher trims offer comparable amenities.

Price-wise, the Matrix typically falls within the same range as its competitors in the used market. If driving enjoyment is a priority, the Mazda3 is a better alternative. For outright fuel economy and a lower price point (used), the Nissan Versa could be considered, but at the expense of some reliability and driving dynamics. The Honda Civic Hatchback offers a well-rounded package similar to the Matrix, but may command a slightly higher price in the used market due to its strong reputation. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual priorities and budget.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Toyota Matrix a Good Sedan?

The 2010 Toyota Matrix is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and practical hatchback. It's a good choice for commuters, small families, or anyone needing a versatile vehicle with ample cargo space. Whether it's worth buying depends on its condition and price. A well-maintained example with a documented service history is definitely worth considering. Look for lower mileage examples and thoroughly inspect for rust. The S trim offers a good balance of features and value. Avoid the XRS if fuel economy is a primary concern. Given its age, buying used is the only option; a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended.

OIL CONSUMPTION WARNING!!

Reliable even after 11 years

At a time when I was moving around two dogs and a cat, this car was an absolute must. It was a great value to start and even more so now that I use it as a second vehicle. The only maintenance I've done is the routine oil changes, etc. I expect to own it for another 10 years

Excellent Car for Versatile Use

I really like my Matrix-S. Using no-ethanol gasoline is recommended for optimum performance. It is able to fit 8-foot long items inside with the passenger seat folded down. I am fairly tall, so the little bit of extra bit of headroom I get with the sunroof is nice. With regular, recommended maintenance, I haven’t had any issues or breakdowns. [knock on wood] If you have a chance and if it’s the right fit, definitely pick one up.

One of the best investments I've ever made

Overall, I'm very pleased with my vehicle. Bought it Certified Used with only 300 miles on the odo; saw it on this website. It would have been nicer if it had the optional 400 watt JBL and a sunroof, but I'm very happy it has AWD. Vehicle came with optional, All Weather Guard Package - Outside Mirrors w/Electric Remote & Heater; Rear Seat Heater Ducts. I gave the vehicle 'good,' not excellent, under Reliability because of what I thought was a premature brake wear issue; four new rotors @ 28K miles 🙁 Gave the vehicle 'good,' not excellent under Comfort, drivers seat leg room isn't that great for a person who is 6'4"; but I've managed. An excellent under Interior Design, next to the 12v plug is a 110v household plug outlet. An excellent under Performance, the 2.4L is no slouch when it comes to merging on the interstate. Leg room in the second row is good and folds flat horizontally (if I were to take a carpenter's level, the little bubble would be in the center). Something I 'really' like about the 2009/2010 models, is that the front passenger seat folds flat. I was able to transport six (6) - two by eight foot (2 X 8ft) long, rigid foam sheets from a big box hardware store. Other than the forementioned brake issues, no problems; just turned 65K miles.

My favourite car . . . .

I love the fold down seats and all of the room. With 255,000.00 km and mostly maintenance not a lot of repairs on mine. What do I do now? I would like another Matrix but Toyota doesn't manufacture it anymore!!

Pretty good buy

This is a good starter inexpensive outdoorsy transportation car. Hatchback is always a plus. Gets the job done when you need it to. 4 stars.

Matrix is for the value minded

Consumer Reports like the 2010 Matrix as a good first car for a young person. Really a hatchback Corolla. Folding seats give lots of room for a variety demands. Not a high performance vehicle unless you opt for the larger engine.

Most reliable car until 120k

Bought this car with 5k (dealership demo car) for utility after trading SUV. Can fit two bikes inside with seats folded down and 3-4 kayaks on top. Have the AWD S. This car was always reliable. Fast and fun to drive but soooo much road noise. Cannot drive this car with back windows down, car vibrates horribly. Have tried 3-4 different sets of tires to help ride and road noise-Goodyear Eagles, Michelin A/S, general and Touring. Sport suspension too stiff, extremely rough ride but corners on a dime. I find the seats very comfortable for long drives. Car can go anywhere with AWD. I have had this car for almost 8 years but would not buy another one. It has served me well and dependable, always starting and never broke down until recently. Car maintained always and oil changes EVERY 3k miles, brakes, etc. But at 120k car went to pieces-torque converter, issues with transmission, tie rods, leaking differential, steering, multiple sets of brakes, axle issues. Engine still runs perfectly but the rest of it failing. Not sure if issues are related to AWD S model but it is disappointing. Thought Toyota would last longer esp with religious maintenance. Transmission places saying same transmission issues as Rav4. People say these are bullet proof and should go to 200k. Not mine. Time to say goodbye.
