Rating: 4.85
Based on 12 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2021 BMW X6 is a luxury coupe SUV, a unique blend of SUV practicality and coupe-like styling. It's part of the X6's third generation, which started in 2020. Key trims include the sDrive40i, xDrive40i, M50i, and the high-performance X6 M. The original MSRP ranged from approximately $65,000 to over $100,000 depending on the trim and options. It's popular for its distinctive design and sporty driving experience, setting it apart from more traditional SUVs.
The Good

The 2021 BMW X6 offers strong performance with powerful engine options appealing to driving enthusiasts. It delivers a comfortable and luxurious ride for daily use. Its distinctive coupe design provides emotional appeal. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers reasonable MPG for its class. It holds good resale value compared to others in its class.

The Bad

The 2021 BMW X6 has compromised rear headroom due to its sloping roofline. The infotainment system, while advanced, can have a steep learning curve. Some owners have reported issues with electronic components and sensors. Maintenance and repair costs can be high compared to non-luxury SUVs. Also, visibility can be somewhat hampered by the design.

What Problems Does the 2021 BMW X6 Have?

The 2021 BMW X6, while generally reliable, has experienced some frequently reported problems. Some owners have reported issues with the electronic systems, including the iDrive infotainment system freezing or malfunctioning. Sensor-related problems, such as parking sensors and driver-assistance systems, have also been noted. Some reports mention occasional issues with the climate control system and the electrical system.

While specific recalls for the 2021 model year may vary and are subject to change, it's crucial to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for the latest recall information. BMW has issued recalls for other models related to fuel pump failures, electrical issues, and brake problems. Therefore, it is important to remain vigilant and check for any recalls specific to the 2021 X6 model.

Long-term reliability can be a concern for BMW vehicles due to the complexity of their systems. Maintenance is critical to prevent major issues. Oil leaks, cooling system problems, and suspension wear are typical BMW concerns that could arise with age and mileage. Regular servicing according to BMW's recommended schedule is highly recommended to mitigate these potential issues.

How long will the 2021 BMW X6 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 BMW X6 can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and adherence to the manufacturer's recommended service schedule are crucial for longevity.

Long-term durability can be affected by factors such as driving conditions and climate. Weaknesses over time may include wear on suspension components, potential for oil leaks as seals age, and increased likelihood of electronic system glitches. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan and minimizing costly repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 BMW X6 boasts a wealth of technology features. Standard tech includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen iDrive infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, Bluetooth, and a premium audio system. The iDrive system is controlled via touchscreen, voice commands, or a rotary dial.

Driver-assistance features are plentiful, including standard forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane keep assist, and a surround-view camera system.

Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Optional features include parking assistant plus with automated parking.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for detailed safety performance. As ratings can vary, always refer to the official reports for the most accurate information. Generally, BMW vehicles perform well in crash tests, reflecting their commitment to safety engineering. Optional features like the Driving Assistance Professional Package further enhance safety with advanced driver aids.

2021 BMW X6 Prices and Market Value

The 2021 BMW X6 had an original MSRP ranging from approximately $65,000 for the base sDrive40i to over $100,000 for the X6 M, depending on options. Current used market prices vary based on mileage, condition, and trim level. Expect to find used 2021 X6 models ranging from around $45,000 to $75,000, depending on these factors.

Depreciation is typical for luxury vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and trim level. Lower mileage and a clean Carfax report significantly boost resale value. The X6 M and well-optioned models generally hold their value better than the base trims.

2021 BMW X6 Cost of Ownership

The 2021 BMW X6 is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs can be significant, especially for the V8 models. Maintenance and repairs are also more expensive than average due to the use of specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for these higher-than-average expenses. Regular maintenance is crucial to avoid costly repairs down the line. This is not an economical vehicle.

2021 BMW X6 Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 BMW X6 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 BMW X6 Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2021 BMW X6 competes with other coupe SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, Audi Q8, and Porsche Cayenne Coupe. In terms of performance, the X6 offers a range of powerful engines comparable to its rivals, especially in the M50i and X6 M trims.

Features are also competitive, with the X6 offering a similar suite of luxury and technology options. However, reliability is an area where some rivals may have an edge. The Audi Q8 and Porsche Cayenne Coupe are often cited as having slightly better reliability ratings.

In terms of price, the X6 is similarly priced to its competitors. A potential alternative to consider is the Porsche Cayenne Coupe, which offers a more engaging driving experience and potentially better long-term reliability, although it can be more expensive depending on the configuration. The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe provides a similar blend of luxury and style but might offer a slightly more comfortable ride. The Audi Q8 is a well-rounded option with a strong emphasis on technology and a sleek interior design. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual preferences and priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 BMW X6 a Good Coupe?

The 2021 BMW X6 is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish and sporty luxury SUV with a distinctive coupe design. It's a good choice for those who prioritize performance and don't mind sacrificing some rear passenger headroom and cargo space for the sake of aesthetics.

Whether it's worth buying depends on your budget and priorities. A used 2021 X6 can offer significant savings compared to buying new. Consider the xDrive40i trim for a balance of performance and value or the M50i for a more thrilling driving experience. Before purchasing, have a mechanic inspect the vehicle for any potential issues and ensure it has a solid maintenance history. Factor in the higher ownership costs associated with a luxury vehicle.

Get one!

Second X6. Very comfortable and confident auto. Tried others - Mercedes, Land Rover and came away wanting the X6 again. Nice and tight, full of more functions than truly necessary and safety is evident. I look for every opportunity to drive this vehicle and I have enjoyed every mile. No surprises. It just does what it is supposed to do - very comfortably!

Most Comfortable Car I Ever Owned

The BMW X6 is exactly what I was looking for. I had my eye on it for years as it has an appealing design. Now was my time to buy. It is stylish, both inside and out, and very comfortable. I love the handling and the user interface. I give it a 10 out of 10.

Does cameras and alarm work while parked?

Great vehicle curious about the delivery of the surround camera featured marketed? Feature function while in park mode did not activate alarm after a good triple jarr from impact of another vehicle.

Get one!

Best BMW yet!

Purchased in March 2021, I have enjoyed every one of the 20000+ miles driven. Comfort, power, appearance - and truly exceptional gas mileage (29+ mpg highway) - have made it my passion to be on the road in this car at every opportunity. Elegant, refined luxury, with all the computer assists available in a 21st century, driver-oriented car
