Rating: 4.70
Based on 12 Owner Reviews â–¶
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Toyota Matrix is a compact hatchback known for its practicality and Toyota reliability. Introduced as a successor to the Corolla wagon, its body style offers cargo versatility and passenger comfort. Model years generally run from 2003-2014. Key trims include the base, S, and XRS (discontinued before 2012). Pricing for a used 2012 Matrix typically ranges from $8,000 to $14,000, depending on condition and mileage. Its blend of affordability, fuel efficiency, and cargo space makes it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2012 Toyota Matrix boasts excellent reliability, a hallmark of Toyota. It offers a comfortable ride and a functional, if somewhat plain, design. Fuel efficiency is commendable, appealing to the practical buyer. Performance is adequate for daily driving. The Matrix provides great value, being affordable to purchase and maintain, making it emotionally appealing to those seeking peace of mind.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2012 Toyota Matrix include a somewhat bland interior and less-than-exciting handling. Watch out for excessive oil consumption in higher mileage examples of the 2.4L engine (if equipped). Rust can be an issue in regions with harsh winters. Also, ensure the automatic transmission shifts smoothly, as some owners have reported minor issues over time.

What Problems Does the 2012 Toyota Matrix Have?

The 2012 Toyota Matrix generally enjoys good reliability, but some common problems have been reported. One notable issue, particularly with the 2.4L engine (although less common in the 2012 model year since the S trim was less prevalent), is excessive oil consumption. Owners should monitor oil levels regularly. Another concern is potential rust, especially in areas where road salt is used extensively. Check the undercarriage and body panels for signs of corrosion.

Some owners have reported minor issues with the automatic transmission, such as rough shifting. Regular transmission fluid changes can help mitigate this. There have been recalls related to airbag inflators (Takata airbags), so it's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with Toyota to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns are minimal if the vehicle is properly maintained. However, like any car, wear and tear items such as brakes, suspension components, and the battery will eventually need replacement. Overall, the 2012 Matrix is considered a reliable choice, but pre-purchase inspection is always recommended, especially looking for signs of oil leaks or rust.

How long will the 2012 Toyota Matrix last?

With good maintenance, a 2012 Toyota Matrix can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Years of service can extend well beyond 10-15 years. Key to longevity is regular oil changes, timely replacement of fluids (transmission, coolant, brake fluid), and addressing any mechanical issues promptly. The engine and transmission are generally durable. Weaknesses may include rust (especially in colder climates), potential oil consumption (2.4L engine), and wear of suspension components like struts and bushings over time. Proper care ensures long-term reliable service.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Toyota Matrix offers a basic but functional set of tech and safety features. Standard entertainment includes a CD player with AM/FM radio and an auxiliary audio input jack. Higher trims (especially the S, though less common in 2012) might have included an upgraded audio system with satellite radio capabilities. There's no built-in navigation system available.

Driver-assistance features are minimal; it lacks modern features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning. Standard safety features include antilock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain).

Optional features (depending on the trim and packages) might include cruise control, keyless entry, and power sunroof.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) are generally good. The 2012 Matrix received good ratings in most IIHS crash tests. NHTSA ratings can vary depending on the specific test, but generally, the Matrix performed adequately. Check specific ratings for frontal, side, and rollover crash tests on the NHTSA website for detailed information.

2012 Toyota Matrix Prices and Market Value

The 2012 Toyota Matrix had a starting MSRP of around $16,000 to $20,000 when new, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $14,000. The Matrix depreciates at a slower rate than many other vehicles due to Toyota's reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level, and location. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition will command higher prices. The S trim (when available) generally holds its value slightly better due to its sportier features and more powerful engine.

2012 Toyota Matrix Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Toyota Matrix is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety record and affordable value. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 1.8L engine. Maintenance and repair costs are also relatively low, thanks to Toyota's reliability and readily available parts. Long-term ownership costs are predictable and manageable, making it a budget-friendly choice. Regular maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, will help keep costs down.

How Does the 2012 Toyota Matrix Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2012 Toyota Matrix competes with other compact hatchbacks like the Honda Civic Hatchback, Mazda3 Hatchback, Hyundai Elantra Touring, and Kia Soul. In terms of reliability, the Matrix is generally considered on par with or slightly better than the Civic and surpasses the Hyundai and Kia. Performance-wise, the Mazda3 offers a more engaging driving experience. Feature-wise, the Hyundai Elantra Touring and Kia Soul might offer more tech and amenities for the price, especially in terms of infotainment. The Kia Soul provides a unique, boxy design that some buyers prefer.

Price-wise, the Matrix is often comparable to the Civic and Mazda3 in the used market. However, the Elantra Touring and Soul might be slightly cheaper.

Alternatives to the 2012 Toyota Matrix include:
  • **Honda Civic Hatchback:** Similar reliability and fuel efficiency.
  • **Mazda3 Hatchback:** More fun to drive with a sportier feel.
  • **Hyundai Elantra Touring:** Potentially more features for the price.
  • **Kia Soul:** Unique styling and value.

If reliability and practicality are paramount, the Matrix is a strong choice. However, if driving enjoyment is a higher priority, the Mazda3 is a better option.

The best car I have ever had

This car has great gas mileage, comfortable for long drives and is wonderful to carry long items by folding down the seats and is large enough to pack a lot of groceries etc.

Reliable like all Toyota cars and fast and agile

This car is very reliable with no problem for years. It is basically a corola with extra trunk space. I owned the sports version and it is very responsive.

Suits me

Wanted a car easy to drive, sits up a bit higher, white, 4door. No complicated cockpit, reliable.. Son said to check out Matrix, so I went and got one. Dealership most helpful. I am an Ol' lady (83) and do not shop or fool around. ( well, you know what I mean) so I am happy, though it does not ride like a Rolls. I did not pay for a Rolls, either. JR

always considered a matrix on May 14, 2012

unique lovable car

I have entertained the thought of buying a matrix every since my daughter rented one for a short road trip over five years ago. I was impressed with the handling and feel of the car ( hers was the base model). I purchased the S model 2010 certified used six months ago. I am a teacher full time and I am also a artisan/crafter, doing arts and crafts shows six months out of the year. The cargo space in this car is incredible, holds all my teaching supplies as well my crafting inventory when I do my shows. This car is eye catching. people give me compliments on the styling all the time.I have taken my car on the freeway for up to 5 hour road trips it purrrrrrs and handles well (very good on gas mileage). This is the second toyota That I have purchased, previously owned a solara camry that I loved. This car has captured my loyalty as well. I am 55 years old but this car has a light , airy, carefree feel that makes me feel 25 again.
