2005 Toyota Matrix Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.36
Based on 45 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2005 Toyota Matrix is a versatile and practical compact wagon, essentially a hatchback version of the Corolla. Produced from 2003 to 2014, the Matrix offered a blend of car-like handling and SUV-like cargo space. Key trims included the base, XR, and XRS. New, they ranged from around $15,000 to $20,000. Its popularity stemmed from its reliability, fuel efficiency, and ample cargo capacity, making it a favorite among those needing practicality without the bulk of an SUV.
The Good

The 2005 Toyota Matrix boasts exceptional reliability and fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. Its sporty design and available all-wheel drive provide a touch of fun, attracting those seeking something more engaging. The comfortable interior and versatile cargo space add to its appeal as a dependable and sensible choice that doesn't sacrifice style or utility. The long lasting nature of Toyota vehicles is a big advantage as well.

The Bad

The 2005 Toyota Matrix can suffer from oil consumption issues, particularly in later years as mileage increases. Rust can also be a problem, especially in regions with harsh winters. The XRS model, while sporty, can be less reliable than other trims. Check for suspension wear and tear, and be aware of potential recalls related to airbags and other safety features. Regular maintenance is key to preventing these problems.

What Problems Does the 2005 Toyota Matrix Have?

The 2005 Toyota Matrix is generally considered reliable, but some common issues and recalls have been reported. A significant concern is oil consumption, particularly in higher-mileage vehicles with the 1ZZ-FE engine. This can lead to engine damage if not monitored and addressed. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, is another potential problem. Check the undercarriage, door panels, and wheel wells for signs of corrosion.

Recalls for the 2005 Matrix have included issues with airbags (Takata recall), which can deploy improperly. It's important to check the vehicle's recall history with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to ensure all necessary repairs have been completed.

Long-term reliability concerns also include potential failures of the mass airflow sensor, oxygen sensors, and catalytic converter as the vehicle ages. The XRS model, with its higher-performance engine, may experience more frequent or costly repairs compared to the base and XR trims. Suspension components, such as struts and bushings, may also require replacement over time. Regular maintenance, including oil changes, fluid checks, and inspections, is crucial to mitigating these potential issues and extending the vehicle's lifespan. Check the service history when purchasing a used Matrix.

How long will the 2005 Toyota Matrix last?

A well-maintained 2005 Toyota Matrix can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. With regular maintenance and conscientious driving, many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles. However, longevity is highly dependent on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or ignoring minor repairs can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Key areas to monitor for long-term durability include the engine (oil consumption), transmission, and suspension. Rust prevention is also essential, especially in colder climates. The weak points tend to be rust, oil consumption, and general wear and tear of rubber components.
Positive Owner Reviews
Robby
Original owners since 2004. Amazing vehicle all around, mainly for the sole reliability it provides. Pushing 470,000km without a single problem ever, this car will never let you down. Maintenance is cheap as dirt because the engine is so well made and nothing ever breaks, timing chain replaced for the first time at 450,000km which is insane. Not to mention it handles well and is quite responsive and smooth for An old car like this and the seats are pretty comfortable easy for long drives. Great on gas super cheap. Overall would definitely recommend, great car.
HelenM
It is a little work horse. She does everything I need to get done . I am going to keep as long as I can.
Chris M
Very Reliable. Very roomy for big people. 25 - 35, local - highway. Excellent vision outside for drivers. Very spacious when rear seats are down, 6 by 4 feet. comfortable for rear passengers.
Negative Owner Reviews
Casper
I enjoyed owning this car! Very comfortable and had a lot of room, the fold flat seats come in handy often. Not very good in the snow or when the pavement is wet no matter the tires i had on it.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Toyota Matrix offered relatively basic tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM radio and a CD player. Higher trims might have included an upgraded sound system with more speakers. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) available.

Safety features included standard front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional. Side airbags were also available as an option. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) wasn't available on all trims.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) show mixed results. While the Matrix performed reasonably well in frontal offset crash tests, side-impact protection was rated as "Marginal" or "Acceptable" depending on the specific test year. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings also varied, with some years receiving 4 or 5 stars for frontal crash protection. These ratings should be considered when evaluating the safety of a 2005 Matrix.

Optional features included a sunroof, fog lights, and remote keyless entry. Overall, the 2005 Matrix prioritized practicality and affordability over cutting-edge technology and advanced safety features. Consider that its crash test scores are less impressive by modern standards.

2005 Toyota Matrix Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Toyota Matrix had a base price ranging from approximately $15,000 to $20,000, depending on the trim level and options. Today, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and location. The Matrix has depreciated significantly due to its age, but its reputation for reliability helps retain some value. Factors affecting resale value include a clean title, service records, low mileage, and minimal rust. The XRS trim, being the sportiest, often commands a slightly higher price on the used market. Good condition is key.

2005 Toyota Matrix Cost of Ownership

The 2005 Toyota Matrix is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety record and value. Fuel economy is excellent, contributing to lower running costs. Maintenance is relatively affordable, with readily available and reasonably priced parts. Repairs are generally infrequent and not overly expensive, thanks to Toyota's reliability. However, potential oil consumption and rust issues could lead to unexpected costs. Overall, the 2005 Matrix is a budget-friendly choice for those seeking affordable transportation. However be wary of age related wear and tear.

2005 Toyota Matrix Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Toyota Matrix is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Toyota Matrix Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2005 Toyota Matrix competed with vehicles like the Mazda3 Hatchback, Honda Civic Si Hatchback, and the Pontiac Vibe (essentially a rebadged Matrix). In terms of reliability, the Matrix and Vibe generally outperformed the Mazda3, while the Honda Civic Si offered sportier performance. Feature-wise, the competitors were relatively similar, though the Mazda3 might have offered a slightly more refined interior. Price-wise, the Matrix was typically competitive.

A similar alternative is the Pontiac Vibe, as it shares the same mechanicals and overall design. A better alternative, if performance is a priority, could be the Honda Civic Si. If interior refinement is desired, the Mazda3 is a good choice. However, for a balance of reliability, practicality, and affordability, the Toyota Matrix remains a strong contender. Before buying, research specific model year issues for each car. Consider the Honda Element for greater cargo versatility, at a higher price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Toyota Matrix a Good Hatchback?

The 2005 Toyota Matrix is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and practical vehicle with good cargo space and fuel efficiency. It's a great choice for students, commuters, or small families. It's worth buying if you find a well-maintained example with a clean service history and minimal rust. Avoid examples with excessive oil consumption. The base or XR trims are generally more reliable than the XRS. Buying used is the only option, and a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended to assess its overall condition and identify any potential problems.

Long Lasting Car

this car has outperformed any other car I have owned while still taking a lot of hits. It has been reliably getting me where I need to go for many years and still runs 15 years later

Hard core Honda owner... converted.

It's a reliable, peppy japanese🎎 car. Except, This one has a Canadian🍁 VIN. Seriously, I have fallen in love with this car. It's not a Lamborghini. It's utilitarian enough to be usable for a Home Depot run, but once you're behind the wheel, this car begs to be driven like a small sports car.

Best car buy I ever made

Other than desiring another 20 or 30 horsepower, this car is nearly perfect in my opinion. Bought it new, the XR trim. Looked great new and still does. Got the factory clear coat, always run through automated washes, never by hand, and still looks shiny new. Very versatile to haul people and stuff. Both my daughters used it for a while, both moved to college with it. Totally reliable, still runs like new, shifts crisp and solid, doesn’t burn a drop of oil, still full to the top at 5k oil changes. Saved my rear today. I got the optional stability control, which was offered for the first time on the 2005 Matrix. A close call with three deer at highway speeds could have turned out very badly. Surely I would have gotten sideways, flipped and rolled. But the stability control tool over like the hand of God, got the car straightened out, and ABS then brought me to a stop feet from the buggers. A heart stopping experience but absolutely amazing what the stability control can do... on a 15 year old car.

Extremely Reliable and Long-Lasting

I’ve had this car since it was purchased in 2005 and I couldn’t be happier. We have had to do some minor maintenance on the car over the years from typical wear and tear, but I am currently at 225,000 miles and still going! I have never once been left on the side of the road or had any breakdown issues, and I think that speaks volumes for the reliability of this car. Love it.

Best car ever!!!!

I bought my 2005 matrix 5 speed new. We actually started with a 2003 matrix traded it for a rav 4 then went back and purchased the 2005. Bessie is her name i drive her about 90 miles or so Monday thru Thursday. She has been the best car. We've kept her maintained but she has almost 360k miles now. We just replaced her clutch for the first time. We've had to replace small maintenance items like tires, battery lights etc. She has been so faithful! I LOVE my matrix!
