The Good
The 2020 BMW Z4 offers thrilling performance, especially in M40i trim, with responsive handling and potent engines. Its striking design appeals emotionally, while comfortable interiors and decent fuel efficiency cater to practical needs. While not known for exceptional reliability, it generally provides a premium driving experience that many find valuable for the price.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2020 BMW Z4 include a relatively small trunk, limited storage space in the cabin, and potential for electrical glitches common to modern BMWs. Some owners report concerns about long-term reliability of certain components. The ride can also be firm, especially on models with sport suspension, which may not be ideal for all drivers.

What Problems Does the 2020 BMW Z4 Have?
Recalls for the 2020 BMW Z4 should be checked via the NHTSA website using the VIN. Recalls can range from minor software updates to more serious mechanical issues.
Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's electronics and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the car ages. Regular maintenance, using quality parts, and addressing issues promptly are crucial for mitigating these concerns. The adaptive suspension components, especially on the M40i, might require attention as mileage increases. Some owners have mentioned premature wear on brake components, particularly with aggressive driving.
How long will the 2020 BMW Z4 last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features comprise standard forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors.
Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings for the 2020 Z4 may vary, and it is important to consult their websites for the latest information. While not always tested comprehensively due to its low-volume sports car status, BMW typically engineers its vehicles with safety in mind. How Does the 2020 BMW Z4 Compare to Other Sedan?
Features-wise, the Z4 offers a good balance, but the Boxster can be extensively customized with options, increasing its price significantly. Reliability is a mixed bag, with the Z4 not typically scoring as high as some Japanese rivals.
Price-wise, the Z4 sits in a similar range to its competitors. If performance is paramount, the Porsche 718 Boxster is a strong contender, albeit at a potentially higher price. For a more luxurious and comfortable experience, the Mercedes-Benz SLC might be preferable. The Audi TT offers a stylish and tech-laden option. If reliability is a primary concern, exploring other brands might be prudent, although the Z4 offers a compelling blend of performance and style.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 BMW Z4 a Good Sedan?

Fastest and coolest car I have ever owned.I upgraded to the 2020 Z4 M40i after having a 2006 Z4 3.0i. The exterior styling and sound gets looks and complements at least once a day when driving. The interior is modern and has lots of the most up to date technology, although I wish less plastic was used. It drives awesome, and I am very pleased with the car.

Its a Cool RideAt first I was skeptical. I was actually in the market for either the Porsche Cayman or 911. I did my analysis and discovered the Z4 compares pretty well with the Cayman. After test driving both cars, I fell in love with the Z4 and its M specs!!

What an incredibly fun car!We purchased the Z4 M40i model. While not the fastest sports car it certainly does not leave us wanting for more power. The ride and handling exceeded our expectations. We drove it 600 miles back home after purchasing and it was a very good long distance cruiser and returned 35 mpg going 85 mph. Pretty impressive for this level of performance. Wind buffeting is well controlled and at highway speeds with the top down and window up you are able to carry on a conversation at a normal level. The sound of the exhaust is awesome especially in sport mode. It pops and crackles and brings a grin to our faces. A few gripes though. 1. Storage inside is pretty limited as expected in such a small car but I think there were missed opportunities in several areas. 2. The base audio is not very good. I would highly recommend getting the upgraded Harmon Kardon. I had that system in my 428 and it was really good. Overall it is an awesome car and we are completely happy with our purchase.

Just about perfectI recently purchased the Z4 M40. I liked the Z4, but loved the M40. The balance of power, handling, style is a home run. HUD, driving modes and sound systems are some of the best I’ve seen. I’ve always been a corvette guy owning several z06’s and just don’t like the lines on the c8. This new z4M hit all the marks for me and is a better balance of power and style for my taste.

Ultimate driving machineAwesome car, plenty of power and a joy to drive. Top down cruising wind in the hair, most fun you can have with your clothes on.

Dealer support is nonexistent.Vehicle was paid in full at the time of purchase but the Title did not arrive. After checking with the Texas DMV I was told that BMW of North America was listed as a lien holder on the vehicle. Attempts to contact the dealership went unanswered .

Even my wife likes it...Super fun to drive, but more feedback in the steering wheel would be nice. Surprisingly quiet for being a convertible. Lots of power on tap, across a wide range of RPMs. My wife wasn’t thrilled with my decision to get the Z4, although she was supportive. However, on our first real road trip, when things got a little weird on the freeway, and we needed to get out from around some craziness, the Z4 just pulled away with amazing capability and grace. My wife even said “that felt really goodâ€, when normally she’d complain about heavy acceleration. It feels so rock steady on the road, it’s pretty amazing. I’ve never driven a car where people whip out their phones to take pictures previously, so it does have a coolness factor that is fun to experience. Incredibly comfortable seating, and amazing tech. I got the Frozen Grey II Metallic paint option, which looks amazing, but it does make it so you really can’t take it many places for care, so I handle it myself. I really love the car, and I really love driving it.

Zippy!I've owned 5 Z's over 25 years. By far the best. A true performance car (with the 382 hp 6). The car has more gizmos and gadgets than I'm interested in. They're there; I ignore them.

enjoy it much. not as much interior as early z4Enjoyable ride, quiet and great with the top down. Top is easier to pt down vs older z4 models. Do miss the old z4 look but enjoy the new design. A good mix of Toyota and BMW.

Amazing carThe m40i is just incredible. It excels in everything. It’s fast, luxurious and insanely fun to drive. Treat yourself it’s well worth it. I’ve owned Porsche’s and this is more fun
