Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2019 BMW X6 is a luxury mid-size Sports Activity Coupe (SAC), blending SUV practicality with coupe styling. Part of the second X6 generation (2015-2019), it offers a unique silhouette. Key trims include the sDrive35i, xDrive35i, and xDrive50i, with the M version at the performance apex. New pricing ranged from approximately $64,000 to over $100,000. Its bold design and powerful engine options made it popular among buyers seeking a distinctive and sporty SUV.
The Good

The 2019 BMW X6 boasts strong performance from its range of engines, offering thrilling acceleration. Its comfortable and luxurious interior provides a pleasant driving experience. The striking coupe design appeals to emotional buyers, while the available all-wheel drive and cargo space offer practical benefits. However, reliability can be a concern, impacting overall value.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2019 BMW X6 include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury SUVs. Some owners report issues with the electronics system. The sloping roofline reduces rear headroom and cargo space compared to traditional SUVs. Be mindful of potential oil leaks and turbocharger issues on higher-mileage examples. It's crucial to review maintenance records carefully.

What Problems Does the 2019 BMW X6 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 BMW X6, and generally for this generation, often involve the electrical system. Owners sometimes report issues with the iDrive system, including screen malfunctions and software glitches. Oil leaks, particularly around the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing, are also relatively common, especially as the vehicle ages. Turbocharger issues, particularly in the V8 models, can arise, leading to costly repairs. While not extremely widespread, reports of coolant leaks and cooling system failures exist.

Recalls for the 2019 model year should be checked via the NHTSA website using the VIN, as they can vary. Long-term reliability is a mixed bag. While many owners experience few major issues, the complex systems and higher performance engines demand regular and meticulous maintenance. Neglecting scheduled services can quickly lead to cascading problems and expensive repairs. Pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended to identify potential issues before committing to a purchase. Be sure to check the vehicle's service history for evidence of regular maintenance and repairs.

How long will the 2019 BMW X6 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 BMW X6 can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. However, achieving this longevity depends heavily on adhering to the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule and addressing issues promptly.

Long-term durability concerns revolve around potential oil leaks, turbocharger wear (especially in V8 models), and electronic system glitches. The suspension components may also require attention as the vehicle ages. Careful owners who prioritize maintenance have a significantly higher chance of experiencing a reliable and long-lasting vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 BMW X6 is well-equipped with technology. Standard features include BMW's iDrive infotainment system with a 10.2-inch display, navigation, Apple CarPlay compatibility (subscription required), a rearview camera, and Bluetooth connectivity. Entertainment options include a standard nine-speaker audio system, with upgrades like a Harman Kardon surround-sound system available.

Driver-assistance features include standard features such as lane departure warning and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Optional features included blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and a surround-view camera system.

Safety features encompass multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) crash test ratings should be checked for specific scores, as they can vary. As of the last update, IIHS ratings for the 2019 X6 were generally good, but specific results depend on the testing criteria at the time. NHTSA provides star ratings for overall safety and specific crash scenarios. Available features like Active Driving Assistant provide increased safety margins.

2019 BMW X6 Prices and Market Value

The 2019 BMW X6 had a new MSRP ranging from around $64,000 for the base sDrive35i to over $100,000 for the X6 M. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and trim level, generally ranging from $35,000 to $60,000.

The X6 depreciates at a moderate rate for a luxury SUV. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and optional equipment. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage and desirable options packages command higher prices. The X6 M typically holds its value better than the lower trims due to its higher performance and exclusivity.

2019 BMW X6 Cost of Ownership

The 2019 BMW X6 is a costly vehicle to own long-term. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and performance capabilities. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs are also above average, as BMW parts and labor tend to be expensive. Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent major issues. Budgeting for unforeseen repairs is advisable, making it a less economical choice for budget-conscious buyers.

2019 BMW X6 Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 BMW X6 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 BMW X6 Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2019 BMW X6 competes with other luxury mid-size SUVs and coupes like the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, Audi Q8, and Porsche Cayenne. In terms of performance, the X6 is generally competitive, offering powerful engine options and sporty handling. Feature-wise, it offers a similar level of luxury and technology as its rivals.

However, the X6's reliability is often considered lower than some competitors, particularly the Lexus RX and Audi Q8. The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe is a direct competitor with a similar coupe-like design and comparable performance, while the Porsche Cayenne offers a more engaging driving experience but at a higher price point. The Audi Q8 provides a more traditional SUV shape with a focus on technology and comfort.

If reliability is a primary concern, the Lexus RX might be a better alternative. For a similar blend of performance and luxury with potentially better reliability, the Audi Q8 is worth considering. The Porsche Cayenne is the choice for those prioritizing driving dynamics. The Mercedes GLE Coupe is a very similar alternative, offering similar attributes.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 BMW X6 a Good Vehicle?

The 2019 BMW X6 is ideal for buyers who prioritize style and performance over practicality. Its unique coupe design and powerful engine options appeal to those seeking a head-turning luxury SUV.

Whether it's worth buying depends on individual priorities. If you value reliability and cargo space, other SUVs might be better choices. However, if you appreciate the X6's distinctive styling and are willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs, it can be a worthwhile purchase. A used X6, with a thorough pre-purchase inspection and a comprehensive maintenance history, offers better value than buying new. The xDrive35i offers a good balance of performance and fuel economy, while the X6 M is for those who demand ultimate performance.

Fun, Functional, Fantastic!

My X6 has been the perfect combination of a luxury SUV and a cushy BMW sedan. I didn't want some big clunky SUV but wanted something a little larger than my BMW 535 . I chose the X6 because it's a very cool looking vehicle with excellent performance and handling. plenty of legroom, both front and back, good space for carrying stuff, and all the creature comforts of a well-appointed BMW sedan. I'd buy my X6 all over again!

Most exciting SUV to drive

This is a really fun and sporty SUV to drive. Other SUVs seem "boxy" and like driving a truck. This car handles excellent, accelertates nicely, and extremely comfortable

Very pricy disappointment !!!!!!!!!

I love the look and the concept behind this vehicle. I purchased my X6 at the beginning of this year . Today is 7/22/2019 and I just left my vehicle at the dealership with drivetrain malfunctioning and the engine overheating. It has been very disappointing for a vehicle that is seated at home most of the time. So far it has left me stranded thrice in the middle of the road with my two little girls.

Horrible!!!! Broke down twice in 6 months!!

This is the 4th BMW I have purchased. Bought it brand new and in 2 weeks it stalled and stranded me on Christmas Eve...dealer said had a “dud” part. Then 6 months later with less than 4K miles it stalled again “Drivetrain” malfunction—I was yet again stranded with my brand grandkids!!!! I do not want this vehicle anymore—-waiting to see if BMW will help me!!!!!! Very very disappointed—-pay a lot of money to drive these cars so they should not breakdown within first year!!!!

Why don't more people own the X6??

This vehicle feels sporty, comfortable, and safe all in the same moment. How do they design such a perfect ride?? Pure pleasure every time I get in the car and press start. As a previous owner of Mercedes and BMW, this car tops the list.
