The 2013 Ford Taurus is a full-size sedan, part of the sixth generation (2010-2019) of the Taurus line. Key trims included the SE, SEL, Limited, and the high-performance SHO. Originally conceived as a mid-size sedan, the Taurus evolved into a spacious family car known for its comfortable ride and available features. New pricing started around $27,000, but used models can be found for much less. Its size and available technology made it a popular choice for those seeking a comfortable and well-equipped sedan.
The Good

The 2013 Ford Taurus offers a comfortable and spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers seeking a reliable family sedan. The SHO model provides engaging performance with its turbocharged engine. While not the most fuel-efficient, it delivers decent gas mileage for its size. Its stylish design and available technology appeal to buyers seeking a modern, well-equipped vehicle. Overall, it presents a good value proposition.

The Bad

Some 2013 Ford Taurus models have been known to experience issues with the water pump, potentially leading to engine overheating. The MyFord Touch infotainment system can be slow and buggy. The car's large size can also make it difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. Repair costs can be higher than average for some components.

What Problems Does the 2013 Ford Taurus Have?

The 2013 Ford Taurus has some frequently reported problems that potential buyers should be aware of. One common issue is related to the water pump, which can fail prematurely, leading to engine overheating and potentially significant repair costs. This problem seems to be more prevalent in models with the 3.5L V6 engine.
Another frequently mentioned concern revolves around the MyFord Touch infotainment system. Many owners have reported issues with its responsiveness, glitches, and overall user-friendliness. Software updates were released to address some of these concerns, but the system's performance can still be frustrating for some users.
There have been some recalls issued for the 2013 Ford Taurus, including recalls related to the powertrain, specifically concerning the transmission. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability can also be affected by potential issues with the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) in AWD models, though this is more commonly seen in older models. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes, is crucial to mitigating this risk. Overall, while the Taurus can be a comfortable and spacious vehicle, it's essential to be aware of these potential issues and address them proactively to ensure long-term reliability.

How long will the 2013 Ford Taurus last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Ford Taurus can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reliable service for 10-15 years, depending on driving conditions and care. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing issues promptly are key to longevity. Weaknesses over time can include suspension components wearing out, potential transmission issues (especially with neglected maintenance), and the aforementioned water pump problems. The MyFord Touch system will also become increasingly outdated over time, though it doesn't directly impact mechanical durability.
Positive Owner Reviews
Sarah Miller
We've had this car for several years and it's been a solid performer. Plenty of room for the kids and their stuff. Fuel economy is decent for a car of this size. Minor repairs here and there, but nothing major.
John Davis
I mostly use this car for long highway drives. The seats are very comfortable and it handles well. The technology is a bit dated now, but it's still a good value for the price.
Michael Brown
I appreciate the safety features of this car. It feels very solid and secure on the road. The trunk is huge, which is great for road trips. A little sluggish on acceleration though.
Negative Owner Reviews
Emily Chen
I've experienced some issues with the transmission slipping, especially in colder weather. Otherwise, it's a decent car. I've kept up with regular maintenance.
David Wilson
I've had some issues with the electrical system, including the power windows and the radio. It can be frustrating. Otherwise, the car is mechanically sound.
Brittany Williams
The gas mileage is definitely not the best. I find myself filling up the tank quite often. The car itself is nice, but the fuel costs add up.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Ford Taurus boasts a range of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features, depending on the trim level. Standard features include Ford's SYNC voice-activated system, which allows for hands-free calling and music control. Higher trims offered the MyFord Touch infotainment system, with an 8-inch touchscreen display. This system included navigation, climate control, and entertainment options. However, as mentioned previously, it's known for being somewhat laggy and not very user-friendly.
For entertainment, the Taurus could be equipped with a premium Sony audio system, providing enhanced sound quality. Driver-assistance features, available on higher trims, include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning. A rearview camera was also available.
In terms of safety, the 2013 Taurus comes standard with antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded the 2013 Taurus a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the Taurus a "Good" rating in most crash tests, though its small overlap frontal crash test rating may vary. Optional safety features included a collision warning system. Overall, the 2013 Taurus offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time, especially in the higher trim levels.

2013 Ford Taurus Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Ford Taurus had an MSRP ranging from approximately $27,000 for the base SE model to over $40,000 for a fully loaded SHO. Currently, used market prices range considerably, from around $6,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Taurus has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and factors like the availability of newer models with updated technology. Resale value is affected by factors such as maintenance history, accident record, and overall condition. The SHO trim generally holds its value better due to its performance capabilities.

2013 Ford Taurus Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2013 Ford Taurus are typically moderate for a full-size sedan. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V6 engines. Maintenance costs are average, but potential repairs, particularly related to the water pump or MyFord Touch system, can increase long-term ownership expenses. Overall, the 2013 Taurus is not the most economical vehicle to own, but with careful maintenance and preventative care, costs can be managed. Choosing the 2.0L EcoBoost can slightly improve fuel economy.

2013 Ford Taurus Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Ford Taurus is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Ford Taurus Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2013 Ford Taurus competes with full-size sedans like the Toyota Avalon, Chevrolet Impala, and Chrysler 300. In terms of performance, the Taurus SHO stands out with its powerful EcoBoost V6, outperforming many rivals. However, the base engines are less impressive in terms of fuel economy compared to the Avalon. Feature-wise, the Taurus offered a comparable range of options, but the MyFord Touch system was often criticized for its usability, a disadvantage compared to the user-friendlier infotainment systems found in the Avalon and Impala. Reliability is a mixed bag; while the Taurus can be reliable with proper maintenance, potential water pump issues and other known problems can impact long-term ownership compared to the Avalon, which is renowned for its reliability. Price-wise, the Taurus generally offered a competitive price point when new, and used models are often more affordable than the Avalon.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Avalon for superior reliability and fuel economy, the Chevrolet Impala for a more modern interior and updated technology, or the Chrysler 300 for a more stylish and luxurious experience. If performance is a priority, the SHO is a strong contender, but otherwise, the Avalon might be a better choice for long-term ownership and peace of mind.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Ford Taurus a Good Sedan?

The 2013 Ford Taurus is a decent option for those seeking a spacious and comfortable full-size sedan at an affordable price point on the used market. It’s ideal for buyers who prioritize interior space and a smooth ride. The SHO model is a good choice for those wanting a performance-oriented sedan.
However, it's essential to be aware of the potential reliability issues, particularly concerning the water pump and MyFord Touch system. A pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended. Buying a well-maintained example with a solid service history is crucial. It is generally not recommended to buy new, as the significant depreciation makes buying used a more sensible financial decision.
