What Problems Does the 2011 Volvo XC90 Have?

The 2011 Volvo XC90, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Common issues include problems with the electronic throttle module (ETM), which can cause rough idling or stalling. The climate control system, specifically the blend door actuators, can also fail, leading to inconsistent temperature control. Suspension components, such as bushings and struts, may wear out, especially on models with higher mileage. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, particularly slipping or rough shifting, though this is more prevalent in earlier model years. Recalls for the 2011 XC90 are relatively limited; it's crucial to check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the aging electronic systems and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the vehicle ages. The V8 engine, while powerful, can be more expensive to maintain due to its complexity. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and fluid flushes, is crucial to mitigate potential problems and extend the vehicle's lifespan. Premature wear of brake components is also a fairly common complaint. Thorough pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic are highly recommended.

How long will the 2011 Volvo XC90 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2011 Volvo XC90 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service. Key to longevity is consistent maintenance: regular oil changes, transmission services, and addressing issues promptly. Long-term weaknesses include potential electronic gremlins and wear and tear on suspension components. The leather upholstery and interior trim generally hold up well, but plastic components can become brittle over time. Rust is generally not a significant issue unless the vehicle has been exposed to harsh conditions. Proper care ensures years of reliable service.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Volvo XC90 comes equipped with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include a premium sound system with CD player and auxiliary input, dual-zone automatic climate control, and cruise control. Higher trims and optional packages offer a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity (limited compared to modern systems), rear park assist, and a sunroof. Driver-assistance features are relatively basic, focusing on safety rather than advanced driving aids.

Safety Features:
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Traction Control
  • Front and side airbags
  • Side curtain airbags for all three rows
  • Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS)
  • Rollover Protection System (ROPS)
Crash Test Ratings: The 2011 Volvo XC90 generally performed well in crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings should be consulted for specific scores, but historically, the XC90 has been recognized for its strong safety performance. The IIHS often awarded it "Good" ratings in various crash tests. Keep in mind that testing methodologies have evolved over time, so direct comparisons to newer vehicles may not be entirely accurate. While lacking modern driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring, its focus on core safety features makes it a safe choice.

2011 Volvo XC90 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Volvo XC90 ranged from approximately $39,000 to $53,000 depending on the trim and options. As a used vehicle, prices now range from roughly $5,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation has been significant due to age and mileage. Factors affecting resale value include: overall condition, maintenance records, mileage, trim level (V8 models tend to hold value better), and location. Vehicles with documented service history and lower mileage command higher prices. The XC90's reputation for safety helps maintain some resale value, but age is the primary driver of depreciation.

2011 Volvo XC90 Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Volvo XC90 can be moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for a mid-size luxury SUV. Fuel economy is below average, especially with the V8. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the Volvo's European origins and potential for specialized parts. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits; neglecting repairs will lead to more expensive problems down the road. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential. It's not the most economical choice, but a well-maintained model can offer reasonable value.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Volvo XC90 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2011 Volvo XC90 competes with vehicles like the Acura MDX, Lexus RX, BMW X5, and Audi Q7. Compared to the MDX, the XC90 offers similar safety features but slightly less sporty handling. The Lexus RX excels in reliability, potentially outperforming the XC90. The BMW X5 offers superior performance but at a higher price point and potentially higher maintenance costs. The Audi Q7 provides a more luxurious interior and advanced technology, but its reliability record might be similar to the XC90.

In terms of price, the XC90 offers good value on the used market. However, for those prioritizing reliability, the Lexus RX might be a better choice. If performance is key, the BMW X5 is a strong contender, but be prepared for higher ownership costs. The Acura MDX provides a balanced approach to performance, features, and reliability. Similar alternatives include the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class, though it can also be more expensive to maintain. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual priorities and budget. The XC90 stands out for its safety and family-friendly focus, but rivals may offer advantages in other areas.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Volvo XC90 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2011 Volvo XC90 is ideal for budget-conscious families prioritizing safety and a comfortable ride. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if found in good condition with documented maintenance history. Look for models with lower mileage and avoid neglected examples. The 3.2 model offers a balance of fuel economy and performance, while the V8 provides more power but at a higher cost. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is crucial. If you value reliability above all else, consider a Lexus RX instead. However, if you appreciate Volvo's safety reputation and classic design, the 2011 XC90 can be a worthwhile purchase.

2011 Volvo XC90

We bought a used 2011 Volvo XC90 (170K mls.) for our teenagers and are very pleased with conditions of the exterior, comfort of the ride and power of the car. The previous owners did a good job at keeping up with the maintenance and had new tires recently added before they sold it. We did have to address some repairs within a few weeks but it was to be expected. Very solid car with a great reputation for safety.

Best Comfort and most secure ride

This car came into my life by surprise and I am in love with how well it has treated me. I am about to hit 180,000 miles and with regular work done (oil changes & etc) this car does not give me an impression that it will die anytime soon. I have run into typical older car problems, such as burnt out headlights. One thing that was my only "big'' problem, was that the hardware to my exhaust rotted out, which was a pricey minor fix (as it is Volvo) but worth it compared to replacing the whole thing. The seats are super comfortable for short and long drives. It handles unbelievably well in winter weather. With Volvos safety ratings I never feel uneasy when driving in dangerous conditions. I love this car and its made me fall in love with Volvos. Looking for my next Volvo right now, I will for sure miss this gem.

This is my 3rd XC90. Great vehicle.

Y first Volvo was a 144 - 1968. 2nd - 142 1970. Next I purchased 2 1973 142E’s. The first was in an accident. The second was purchased as it’s replacement. 1980’s, 1990’s, 2000’s. About 12 in total. I any had 2 limited 262C s.

Most comfortable car I’ve had!

Great to have optional third row. Use it to separate kids on long car rides. Back rows good for average kids, not tall ones, tight leg and head space for tall adults. Love front seats and visibility. Great travel car.

Most comfortable, safe car I have owned

This SUV is loaded with extras and safety features. The third row is a great option to have and also the incorporated booster in 2nd row. We couldn't be happier with this SUV.
