The Good
The 2008 Volvo XC90 offers a comfortable and safe driving experience. Its Scandinavian design provides an understated elegance appealing to emotional buyers. Practical advantages include a spacious interior, available third-row seating, and Volvo's renowned safety features. While not a performance leader, it provides adequate power for daily driving and decent reliability, offering good value for families.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2008 Volvo XC90 include higher maintenance costs compared to some competitors. The V8 engine, while powerful, can be prone to oil leaks and higher fuel consumption. Also, be aware of potential transmission issues, particularly in earlier model years. Check for suspension wear and electronic glitches, as these can be common problems. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate these issues.

What Problems Does the 2008 Volvo XC90 Have?
Electrical issues, such as problems with the central electronic module (CEM), can also occur, leading to various malfunctions. Power windows and door locks might also exhibit problems. Check engine lights are common, and diagnosing the underlying cause can sometimes be challenging. Recalls have been issued for various reasons, including issues with the fuel pump relay and potential problems with the brake system. Owners should check the vehicle's VIN against recall databases to ensure all necessary repairs have been performed. Long-term reliability largely depends on maintenance. Neglecting scheduled maintenance can exacerbate existing weaknesses and lead to more costly repairs down the line. Pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended to identify potential issues before committing to a purchase.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles but included features like antilock brakes (ABS), stability control, and traction control. Volvo was renowned for its safety, and the XC90 was no exception. Standard safety features included front and side airbags, side curtain airbags for all three rows, and whiplash protection for the front seats (WHIPS). Optional features included rear parking sensors.
Crash-test ratings were generally very good. The XC90 typically earned high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These ratings contributed significantly to the XC90's reputation as a safe and family-friendly vehicle. While the technology is dated by today's standards, the focus on safety remains a strong point.

How Does the 2008 Volvo XC90 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
Alternatives to the XC90 include the Acura MDX, which offers a better balance of performance and reliability, and the Lexus RX, which is known for its long-term dependability and comfortable ride. The BMW X5 provides a more engaging driving experience but can be more expensive to maintain. If safety and affordability are top priorities, and you're willing to invest in preventative maintenance, the XC90 can be a good choice. However, for superior reliability, the Lexus RX is a stronger contender.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Volvo XC90 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

2008 XC 90 purchased in 2023 with 108kVery happy with the XC90. Finding more reasons to like it every time I drive it. Car feels solid and safe. Stepping on the gas gives it a fast start off the line. Purchases it pre-owned,brakes chattered a little. So soon after had both brakes done, now it stopes beautifully, no noise, no vereing, no problems. My last vehicle was a Honda CRV. The hood is bigger and took some getting used to. I was not crazy about spending 81 dollars to fill up and top off the tank. But I am still on the first tank(little less than 1/2 a tank left) I never thought I would ever be able to afford or drive a Volvo in my life time, but I am! Living the dream!

Get the V8 versionXC90 V8 is a phenomenal value for the money. Bought used XC90 V8 exactly one year ago, and we put over 20k miles on it so far (with a couple hundred of those being hard desert off roading). Fantastic vehicle and is surprisingly fuel efficient for a V8 SUV. We average 19 MPG on road trips and 15 MPG for around town. Very comfortable cruiser.

I have owned a 2008 XC90 V8 for about 4 years.Worst vehicle ever owned in my entire life. I am a volvos driver for about 30 years from 240 DL, 740 GLE, 850 GLT, XC90 6 cylinders and the V8 to be the worst with every kind of problems. Finally, it is in my driveway with a broken transmission. The best one so far was the XC90 6 cylinders. My family loves Volvos but now we are very disappointed about that one.

Fully loaded XC-90A safe, solid vehicle that is excellent in snow. Plenty of room and comfort for a large family. Third row seat and roof rack are helpful.

Love Love My XC90This is my 2nd XC90. I love this car. I love the look and the utility . Super love the reliability. Traded my old XC90 for another XC90. This is my forever car.

Most reliable and safe car. Bluetooth enabled.Great condition and still drives very smoothly. So much space yet midsized. Very comfortable. Can’t imagine how we would have gotten on all these years without it.

Great SUV, But there are significant problem areasI own a lot of Volvo's , but this is my first xc90 (v8 Sport, loaded). Replaced my '10 MB 350 BluTec which blew up. Problem areas (and it can cost a ton of money)- Radiator leaks into trans cooler. Once that happens the tranny is toast. Happened to me within a few weeks of my buying. In the end, it was about a $6k ordeal. Also, the front engine cover idler pulley stud often breaks. Another $1k++ repair. Upper Strut mounts are also a problem. Especially passenger side. Replace only with HD IPD. Fuel economy isn't great, but what can you expect from a v8 SUV weighing nearly 5k lbs. Despite all the problems (I think some of the problems were anomalies--except radiator, there's a SB on it) it is a very good SUV.

King of the roadI drove many SUVs the Volvo xc90 v8 is comfort reliable and I feel I drive a tank but needs aerodynamic , the AWD is not reliable on off-road, so complex in maintaining, check engine every time, gearbox is too bad after 100 miles, leather crack, dashboard so classic and the front design so bad shape even the new model

Tank of a carThese are the most solid SUVs on the road. Compared to other brands, they can take a pounding and last forever. I personally like 2008 and later as I don?t want to mess with a timing belt, but they?re all great. As with any car, there can be some quirky and scary looking errors, but almost all are relatively minor sensor issues that can easily be fixed or replaced.
