The 2020 Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV that represents Volvo's commitment to safety, Scandinavian design, and comfortable driving. Part of the second-generation XC90 introduced in 2015, the 2020 model offers a blend of luxury and practicality. Key trims include Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. Pricing ranged from approximately $49,000 to $70,000 when new. It stands out due to its elegant interior, comfortable seats, and focus on safety, making it a popular choice for families seeking a premium SUV.
The Good

The 2020 Volvo XC90 offers a comfortable and luxurious ride, appealing to those seeking a relaxing driving experience. Its elegant Scandinavian design and well-appointed interior evoke a sense of sophistication. While not a performance SUV, its engine provides adequate power. Practical buyers appreciate its focus on safety, spacious interior, and decent fuel efficiency for its class. Reliability can be a concern, but overall it's a stylish and practical choice.

The Bad

Some common complaints about the 2020 Volvo XC90 include its infotainment system, which can be slow and cumbersome to use. Reliability has been a recurring concern, with reports of electrical issues and problems with some of the advanced driver-assistance features. The ride, while comfortable, can feel a bit floaty for some drivers. Potential buyers should carefully inspect the car's service history and consider an extended warranty.

What Problems Does the 2020 Volvo XC90 Have?

The 2020 Volvo XC90, while praised for its design and safety, has faced its share of reported problems. One of the most frequently cited issues revolves around the infotainment system. Owners have reported slow response times, glitches, and software malfunctions, making it frustrating to use some of the car's features. Electrical issues, in general, have been a recurring concern, with reports of problems affecting various systems, including the lights, sensors, and driver-assistance features.

Some owners have also reported issues with the air suspension, particularly in models equipped with this option. Problems can range from uneven ride height to complete system failure. Engine issues, though less common, have also surfaced, including oil consumption and premature wear in some cases.

While specific recalls for the 2020 model year may exist and should be checked with NHTSA, it's important to note that Volvo has issued recalls for other XC90 model years for issues such as faulty seatbelts, airbag malfunctions, and fuel line leaks. These recalls, while not directly affecting the 2020 model, highlight the potential for similar issues to arise.

Long-term reliability is a concern for some owners. The XC90's complex systems and reliance on technology can lead to increased maintenance costs and potential for breakdowns as the vehicle ages. Thorough maintenance and regular servicing are crucial to mitigate these risks.

How long will the 2020 Volvo XC90 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2020 Volvo XC90 can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. However, reaching the upper end of that range depends heavily on diligent maintenance. The XC90's complex electronics and air suspension (if equipped) are potential long-term weaknesses. Regular servicing of these systems is crucial. Oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires will significantly impact longevity. Neglecting maintenance will likely lead to premature failures and higher repair costs over time. Some owners report the engines are reliable if maintained but others show oil consumption. Regular software updates are important as well for optimal performance.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Volvo XC90 boasts a comprehensive suite of technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard is a 9-inch Sensus Connect touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. While visually appealing, its complex menu structure and occasional sluggishness have been criticized. Available entertainment features include a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system offering exceptional audio quality.

Driver-assistance features are a strong point, with standard equipment including lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and a driver attention alert system. Adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist, Volvo's semi-autonomous driving system, is available and helps with steering, acceleration, and braking on well-marked highways. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also offered.

Safety is paramount, and the XC90 typically receives excellent crash-test ratings. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has often awarded the XC90 its Top Safety Pick+ designation. Standard safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, and a rearview camera. Optional features include a 360-degree surround-view camera system and park assist pilot.

While the infotainment system might not be the most intuitive, the XC90's focus on safety and its array of driver-assistance features make it a compelling choice for families.

2020 Volvo XC90 Prices and Market Value

The 2020 Volvo XC90 had a starting MSRP of around $49,000, with higher trims like the Inscription reaching $70,000 or more when new. Current used market prices typically range from $30,000 to $50,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The XC90 depreciates at a moderate rate for a luxury SUV. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it's a popular color combination. Models with lower mileage and a clean Carfax report command higher prices. The T8 plug-in hybrid may hold its value slightly better due to its fuel efficiency and desirability.

2020 Volvo XC90 Cost of Ownership

The 2020 Volvo XC90 tends to be moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums are generally higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine, with the T8 plug-in hybrid offering the best fuel economy. Maintenance can be expensive, especially for specialized repairs or if using a Volvo dealership. Potential reliability issues can also lead to unexpected repair bills. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for regular maintenance and potential repairs, making it a less economical choice than some of its rivals.

2020 Volvo XC90 Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 Volvo XC90 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Volvo XC90 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2020 Volvo XC90 competes against other mid-size luxury SUVs like the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Acura MDX. In terms of performance, the XC90's T6 engine is adequate, but the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE offer more powerful engine options. The Audi Q7 offers a similarly refined driving experience. Features-wise, the XC90 is well-equipped, but its infotainment system lags behind rivals in terms of user-friendliness. Reliability is a concern compared to the Acura MDX, which is known for its dependability. The Lexus RX 350 also offers better reliability.

In terms of price, the XC90 is generally competitive, but used market values can fluctuate. If reliability is a top priority, the Acura MDX or Lexus RX are better alternatives. For a sportier driving experience, the BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne might be preferable, albeit at a higher price point. The Audi Q7 offers a similar blend of luxury and practicality. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and preferences. For those prioritizing Scandinavian design and a focus on safety, the XC90 remains a compelling option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Volvo XC90 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2020 Volvo XC90 is ideal for families who prioritize safety, comfort, and stylish Scandinavian design. It's worth buying if you appreciate its unique aesthetic and don't mind potential infotainment quirks or reliability concerns. Buying used can be a good value, but a thorough inspection and a comprehensive warranty are highly recommended. Consider the T6 or T8 models for a balance of performance and fuel efficiency. The Inscription trim offers the most luxurious features. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Acura MDX or Lexus RX. Ensure the vehicle has a detailed service history and address any outstanding recalls before purchasing.

It's a bust

I bought a volvo because they have a rep for being safe and reliable. I've owned my 2016 xc90 momentum since October 2019 and it's always in the shop. Last year, radiator hose went out. That was covered under warranty thank goodness. Today, the fuel injector went out. That is not cover and its about a 2K cost. This is supposed to be a luxury vehicle. It does not feel luxurious. It feels more like the packaging is luxurious and the insides are crap. Such a disappointment. I really wanted this car to work...but looks like I'll be car shopping much sooner than later.

Reliable and comfortable SUV

This vehicle has the best safe for a base model. Gas consumption is also great. All the feature it has is great considering it is just a base model. Since it is a base model, the only downside is it doesn't have a hitch for bicycle rack. But overall comfort is there for daily driving and to haul lots of stuff.

All you want in a luxury SUV

Ride, handling, responsiveness, safety assists, pleasant interior and exterior is brilliant - I have the XC90 T6 Inscription with leather vented seats, heated, etc... I couldn't be more happy with the handling and roominess of this model and vehicle. I tested other luxury SUV's but this is the one. Took one test drive, that was all it took.

I LOVE THIS CAR

This car has it all. Tons of safety features which, actually, help me to drive it safely in all weather conditions. Lots of power when needed. Decent mileage as well. No operating issues at all. Very comfortable for driver and for passengers and tons of cargo space, with room for more on the roof! The car is very comfortable and easy to operate. Best car I ever owned.

First SUV, very comfortable, handles very well.

Had to get a bigger car and this SUV has been very good for my back getting into and out of the car. The car has great pick up and runs great. Has a lot of safety features that I love. Handles very well on turns and on the road. Back up camera has a big view for seeing what is behind the car. Very comfortable seats, great sound from the radio, style of car is beautiful as is the inside. Lots of leg room and head room.
