Rating: 4.74

Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2019 Volvo XC90 is a luxurious mid-size SUV, representing Volvo's commitment to Scandinavian design and safety. The XC90 debuted in 2002, and the second generation, including the 2019 model, boasts a stylish wagon/SUV body style. Key trims include Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. Pricing for the 2019 model ranged from approximately $48,000 to $68,000 when new. Its elegant interior, advanced safety features, and comfortable ride make it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2019 Volvo XC90 offers a blend of performance and comfort, appealing to both emotional and practical needs. Its elegant design and luxurious interior cater to emotional buyers, while its focus on safety, reliability, and fuel efficiency (for its class) attract practical buyers. It's a stylish and sensible choice.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2019 Volvo XC90 include infotainment system complexity, which can be distracting or slow. Some owners have reported issues with electronic components and air suspension (if equipped). Repair costs can be higher compared to some rivals, and the T6 engine, while powerful, might not feel as sporty as competitors' engines.

What Problems Does the 2019 Volvo XC90 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 Volvo XC90, while not universally experienced, often revolve around the infotainment system. Users have complained about slow response times, glitches, and connectivity issues with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Some owners have also reported issues with the air suspension system (if equipped), leading to costly repairs. Other reported problems include electrical glitches, such as sensor malfunctions or issues with the climate control system.

Recalls for the 2019 XC90 are important to check. Common areas for recalls on this and similar model year Volvo vehicles include issues with the fuel line, potential seatbelt failures, and software glitches that could affect safety systems. Always consult the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information.

Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the complex systems within the XC90. While Volvo has a reputation for safety, the advanced technology can lead to increased maintenance and repair costs as the vehicle ages. Preventative maintenance and addressing issues promptly are essential for long-term reliability. The T8 hybrid models might have additional concerns related to the battery and hybrid system over time. Regular servicing from qualified technicians is recommended.

How long will the 2019 Volvo XC90 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 Volvo XC90 can reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Key to longevity is adherence to scheduled maintenance, including oil changes, fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires. Long-term durability can be affected by the air suspension system (if equipped), the infotainment system, and potential issues with the turbocharger or supercharger (especially in T6 models). Regular inspections and proactive repairs can mitigate these weaknesses and extend the vehicle's lifespan. Models subjected to harsh driving conditions or neglected maintenance may experience a shorter lifespan.

This car is nothing short of superb. A pleasure to drive and gives you the feeling of complete safety. Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in purchasing one.

The very best car I have ever driven in my whole life. Thank you for the unforgettable experience and I’m looking for future cars of the same VOLVO class and quality if any ever exists. Thank you.

The XC90 has been my dream car for many years... then I finally bought it. It surpassed my expectations. Not only its safety features (already it's an AWD giving peace of mind) but the 'hard' details, such as solidity, airbags, and also the 'soft' ones, the cameras, the signaling systems, the auto brake, the SOS button inside... you do feel totally protected. I was also impressed by the powerful and seamless connectivity and the possibility of starting or stopping the car from remote, which is very handy when you want to heat or cool the car before you go for a trip. Not to mention the times when you may forget to lock it... it sends you an alert and you can lock it from afar. Mine is a 7 seater but only use one row of back seats... the trunk is simply giant. The car is super spacious without ever giving you the feeling of being oversize or bulky Finally, the moonroof is simply stunning. I would totally recommend it.
Negative Owner Reviews
Larry
We test drove a 2016 XC90 and loved it but or budget didn't. We leased an XC60 instead. Since our lease was ending, we decided to go for the XC90 this time basically because we saw a great color scheme on the lot. The test drive was horrible. The cabin looked considerably cheaper than out memory of the 2016 and the feel inside was uncomfortable. It reminded me of driving with a back window slightly open with the air pressure pulsating as I drove. The power wasn't impressive and the ride was average. I do not think it is worth the price.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Volvo XC90 is equipped with a comprehensive suite of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features include a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, and a rearview camera. Driver-assistance features include lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking.

Optional features include adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist (semi-autonomous driving), a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, park assist, and a Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system. The infotainment system controls many vehicle functions, which can be a double-edged sword, offering extensive control but also potential complexity.

Safety is a Volvo hallmark. The 2019 XC90 earned excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick+" rating, indicating top performance in crash tests and advanced safety features. These tests evaluate performance in various crash scenarios, including frontal, side, and rollover impacts. The presence of numerous airbags and advanced driver-assistance systems further enhances occupant protection.

2019 Volvo XC90 Prices and Market Value

The 2019 Volvo XC90 had a starting MSRP of around $48,000 to $68,000 depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices range from approximately $28,000 to $45,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation is influenced by factors like mileage, condition, accident history, and trim level. Higher trims like Inscription and well-maintained examples tend to hold their value better. Overall, the XC90 depreciates at a moderate rate compared to other luxury SUVs. Color and optional equipment can also affect resale value.

2019 Volvo XC90 Cost of Ownership

Long-term ownership of a 2019 Volvo XC90 can be moderately costly. Insurance premiums are typically higher than average due to its luxury status and safety features. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice (T5, T6, or T8), with the T8 offering the best fuel economy. 2019 Volvo XC90 Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Volvo XC90 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Volvo XC90 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2019 Volvo XC90 competes with other luxury mid-size SUVs like the Acura MDX, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, and Lexus RX. In terms of performance, the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE generally offer sportier handling and more powerful engine options, while the XC90 prioritizes comfort and a smooth ride. Feature-wise, the XC90 is competitive, offering a comprehensive suite of safety and technology features.

Reliability is a mixed bag; the Acura MDX and Lexus RX have historically better reliability ratings, while the XC90's complex systems can lead to more frequent repairs. The Audi Q7 is similarly complex but offers a more engaging driving experience.

Price-wise, the XC90 is generally in the same ballpark as its German rivals but often offers more standard features. For those prioritizing reliability and a lower cost of ownership, the Acura MDX or Lexus RX are better alternatives. If performance is paramount, the BMW X5 or Mercedes-Benz GLE are stronger contenders. The Audi Q7 presents a similar level of luxury and technology but with a sportier edge.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Volvo XC90 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2019 Volvo XC90 is ideal for families seeking a stylish, safe, and comfortable luxury SUV. It's a worthwhile buy, especially on the used market, if you prioritize Scandinavian design, advanced safety features, and a luxurious interior. However, be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs compared to some rivals. Consider a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history. The T6 and T8 models offer more power, but the T5 is adequate for most drivers. If reliability is your utmost concern, explore alternatives like the Acura MDX or Lexus RX. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

GET ONE

This is my fifth Volvo. My most important feature in any car is safety, and this car is SAFE. It is super comfortable, reliable, attractive, and an all around great car. I had XC70's until this XC90. It was tough to switch, but I'm so happy. My only disappointment is that I have two big dogs and they can't both fit in the way back comfortably, so I have a crate in the way back and a crate in the middle with two seats folded down (one up for a passenger). Otherwise, it's a "10." No issues at all at 4 years in.

Great combination of style and technology

Volvo is known for safety and this one delivers with all the latest safety features. But it also adds performance with a combination of supercharging for power off the line, with turbocharging to add power in mid range. Together they deliver performance similar to a V8 with a lot better mpg. The interior is very modern and tasteful. Seats very comfortable. We opted for the air suspension system which really makes a difference in our area with rough roads. I'd recommend it to anyone. Also added the high performance sound system from Bowers and Wilkins. I did not think I wanted to pay up for it, but once I heard it I couldn't pass it up. Many great tech features like Pilot Assist (auto drive), cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, auto park, etc. Recommend the T6 level powertrain, the Air Suspension, and if you can swing it, the Bowers and Wilkins sound system.

Idiot lights keep popping on. Failed inspection.

Not happy with control panel and HVAC. Lights keep popping off and unable to get inspection sticker. Appears to be an emissions problem. Dealer could care less and charged $150 for scan and light came back on 8 miles later. My 7th and last Volvo!

Love the Volvo XC 90 R-Design

I initially decided to trade my 2017 Volvo XC 60 for a new 2020 XC 90 but came across a low mileage (7100 mi.) 2019 R- Design. Could not be happier with the trade in value for my XC 60 or the price on the slightly used XC 90. Now is really a good time for consumers to trade up! This car is beautiful inside and out with 22 inch wheels, an air conditioned glove box, super comfortable front seats, upgraded sound system and head snapping acceleration. The display system is easy to learn and comprehensive. I cannot think of anything I would add to make driving more enjoyable.

Great/safe car.

A big upgrade from our 2004 XC90. Just drove the 2019 down the East Coast and found it had great performance, comfort, and safety features that helped immensely in some really tough driving weather.
