The Good
The 2014 Volvo XC90 offers a comfortable and safe ride, appealing to practical buyers. Its classic Scandinavian design evokes a sense of understated luxury, attracting emotional buyers. While not a performance SUV, its smooth ride and spacious interior provide a pleasant driving experience. Reliability is generally good, and it represents good value in the used market due to depreciation.
The Bad
The 2014 Volvo XC90's weaknesses include its relatively outdated infotainment system compared to newer models. Fuel economy is not a strong point. Potential buyers should watch out for transmission issues and electrical problems, particularly in higher-mileage examples. The 3.2L engine can feel underpowered when fully loaded. Suspension components should also be inspected.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2014 Volvo XC90 Have?
Recalls for the XC90, while not necessarily specific to the 2014 model year, have addressed issues related to airbags and fuel pump relays in the past. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls.
Long-term reliability concerns often center around the cost of maintaining a luxury SUV as it ages. Parts can be expensive, and repairs may require specialized knowledge. Suspension components, such as struts and control arms, may need replacement over time. Oil leaks from the engine and transmission are also potential concerns. Regular maintenance and careful inspection before purchasing are essential to mitigate these risks.
How long will the 2014 Volvo XC90 last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles. Available features include rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. These features enhance safety and convenience.
Safety is a Volvo hallmark. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a full complement of airbags, including side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags. The 2014 Volvo XC90 received strong crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reflecting its robust safety design.
While the technology is dated compared to newer SUVs, the XC90's focus on fundamental safety features remains a strong selling point. Optional features like the blind-spot monitoring system added extra layers of protection.

How Does the 2014 Volvo XC90 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
Reliability is a mixed bag. The Lexus RX 350 is generally considered more reliable, while the BMW X5 can be more problematic. The Acura MDX offers a good balance of reliability and performance. Price-wise, a used 2014 XC90 is often more affordable than a comparable RX 350 or X5, making it a value proposition for budget-conscious buyers.
Alternatives to consider include the Acura MDX for its reliability and performance, or the Lexus RX 350 for its comfortable ride and fuel efficiency. If budget isn't a major concern, a newer, certified pre-owned SUV from these brands might be a better choice. However, if a safe and spacious SUV at a lower price point is the priority, the 2014 XC90 remains a viable option.

No major problems. Maintenance on schedule. On my second set of tires. Second set brakes. It's a highway vehicle for sure. Quick precise steering. It's a keeper so far. Two minor repairs. Brake pedal sensor. Can't remember the other thing.

Great SUVI love this car! So reliable, easy to own. Great space, looks good. Built like a tank, but drives smooth - even had a button buck hit and bounce off - no damage at all. Highly recommend.

Safe carWe have owned Volvo cars since 1988 and they have been the safest car around. We were T-boned and we all walked out with nothing more than a few scrapes on my arm from the broken window and a broken toe. Survived 2 different deer hitting our cars Survived a rear end collision with nothing more than a headache

Best car I?ve owned! My 2014 XC90 Premier-Plus has been a very good car. I bought it used with 25,000 miles 2 years ago and now I have 129,000. I haven?t had a single problem other than regular matinance. I?m hoping it will last 300,000 miles and am pretty confident it will up to this point. I was surpised by how comfortable the car is when I first test drove it before buying. It?s quiet when on the highway. Seats are amazing. Just enough bells and whistles to make one happy. Despite a good sounding mighty roar the engine puts out when accelerating power is extremely inadequate for its size, I wish they put the T6 (3.0 6 Cylinder Turbo 302HP) that is an option in all the other models. The transmission is super smooth and fairly quick reacting. It drives like a tank! I have never driven a car so smooth and firm, even on ice the thing is always planted to the ground, I don?t think I have ever had a problem skidding or brining it to a stop in the snow. I saw a video on YouTube where this guy took it to an icy parking lot at night and pounded the accelerator to the floor, the thing barreled straight forwards as if there were no ice at all! I wouldn?t dare to try it though... I hate it when people say it is outdated because it isn?t really, I think even now it still looks better than most the cars on the road. And don?t even get me started on quality, everything about the car feels solid, taking it off-road wouldn?t be a problem because of its ride height and ruggedness. As much as I?d love to keep it to 300k miles, I love the new 2016-19 XC90. I might eventually trade in for the new version. Anyways, I would highly recommend buying this car to anyone who wants something safe, reliable, comfortable, and is willing to sacrifice a little bit of power for all of the good things about the car. VOLVO FOR LIFE!
