What Problems Does the 2013 Volvo XC90 Have?

The 2013 Volvo XC90, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Common issues often revolve around the electronic systems, including the navigation system, sensors, and climate control. Some owners have reported issues with the transmission, experiencing rough shifting or slipping. Suspension components, such as the air suspension (if equipped), can also be a source of problems as the vehicle ages. It's important to check the condition of these systems during a pre-purchase inspection.
While specific recall information can vary, it's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls related to the 2013 Volvo XC90. Long-term reliability concerns often stem from neglected maintenance. Regular fluid changes (engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant) are essential to prolonging the life of the vehicle. Address any warning lights or unusual noises promptly to prevent more significant and costly repairs down the road. Models with higher mileage are more likely to exhibit wear and tear, so a thorough inspection is paramount.

How long will the 2013 Volvo XC90 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Volvo XC90 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reliable service for 10-15 years. However, long-term durability hinges on consistent upkeep. Weaknesses often emerge in the electronic systems, suspension components (especially air suspension if equipped), and drivetrain. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and addressing minor issues promptly, is crucial to maximizing the lifespan and minimizing costly repairs. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan and increase the likelihood of major repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Volvo XC90 boasts a range of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features, though dated compared to newer models. Standard features include a premium sound system, dual-zone climate control, and a sunroof. The infotainment system includes a radio, CD player, and available navigation. Optional features include a rear-seat entertainment system with DVD player.
Driver-assistance features are less advanced than current models, focusing primarily on basic safety. These include anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. Some models may have optional features like rear parking sensors.
Safety is a Volvo hallmark. The 2013 XC90 typically received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA. It includes standard safety features such as side-impact airbags and whiplash protection system (WHIPS). While not offering the advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) of newer vehicles, its solid structure and comprehensive airbag system contribute to its safety reputation. Check IIHS and NHTSA websites for specific crash-test results for the 2013 model year.

2013 Volvo XC90 Prices and Market Value

The 2013 Volvo XC90 had a starting MSRP of around $40,000 to $50,000 when new, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices range significantly, typically from $8,000 to $18,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation has been substantial due to its age. Factors affecting resale value include the overall condition of the vehicle, maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options. Models with lower mileage and a well-documented maintenance record command higher prices. The popularity of SUVs and the Volvo brand also play a role in resale value.

2013 Volvo XC90 Cost of Ownership

Long-term ownership costs for a 2013 Volvo XC90 can be moderate to high. Insurance costs are typically average for a mid-size luxury SUV. Fuel costs can be significant due to its fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher compared to non-luxury vehicles, especially if repairs are needed for specialized Volvo components. Routine maintenance, if performed at a Volvo dealer or qualified independent shop, can also add to the expense. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle to own, primarily due to fuel consumption and potential repair costs.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Volvo XC90 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Volvo XC90 competes with other mid-size luxury SUVs like the Acura MDX, Lexus RX, and BMW X5. In terms of performance, the BMW X5 generally offers a sportier driving experience, while the XC90 prioritizes comfort. The Acura MDX and Lexus RX are known for their reliability, often exceeding the XC90 in this aspect. Feature-wise, newer versions of its rivals may offer more advanced technology. In terms of price on the used market, the XC90 can be a good value.
Alternatives to consider include: The Acura MDX offers similar practicality and better reliability. The Lexus RX provides a more luxurious and refined experience with excellent reliability. The BMW X5 delivers superior performance and handling, but may come with higher maintenance costs. The Buick Enclave is also an alternative with 3-row seating, that can offer better value on the used market.
The XC90 excels in its reputation for safety and comfortable ride, appealing to families. However, buyers should weigh its strengths against its dated technology and potentially higher maintenance costs compared to some rivals.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Volvo XC90 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Volvo XC90 is ideal for families seeking a safe and comfortable, albeit somewhat dated, mid-size SUV. It's a worthwhile purchase on the used market if found in good condition with a solid maintenance history. Prioritize lower-mileage examples and those without air suspension to minimize potential repair costs. Avoid neglected examples or those with extensive electronic issues. The Inscription trim offers the most luxurious features, while the base 3.2 provides good value. If advanced technology and ultimate reliability are priorities, consider alternatives like the Acura MDX or Lexus RX. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

Safety first

This is my 5th Volvo and and currently own three XC90's. They are 2005, 2007 and 2013. I love the way they handle all road conditions and the way they drive. Although the exterior and interior designs are somewhat dated compared to other SUV's. The engine power is adequate for the vehicle weight. Fit and finish are superb. Visibility - No blind spots. Can't and wont compromise safety. These vehicles fit the bill for my needs. Routine maintenance is a must if you want this car to last and perform like new,

Saved my life when hit head on while pregnant

The Volvo XC90 is the safest car on the road! Second one I have owned. This car saved my and my unborn baby’s life when in a head-on car accident 8 months pregnant.

Best car I've ever owned!

I traded in my beloved Ford Ranger for a 2013 XC90 3.2 AWD with 95,000 miles at the end of 2018 and became the first non American brand car I've own. So far, I've put about 25,000 miles on it and has exceeded my expectations. It seems to tow my 16' boat with ease, was very comfortable driving across country and with decent ground clearance and a very capable AWD system, it does surprisingly well off road. I was even able to pull my buddies stuck 4X4 Toyota Tacoma out of the mud. It has done all of this while not having to put a dime into it other than oil changes and some mud and snow tires.

Car was a great buy,

This car has some issues, but it is used. They are minor issues, and nothing note worthy. It needs new fuses, the ac works when it wants to, there is a leak in the rear brake pump, and it needs a front end alignment. All stuff to be expected, and will not be issues to get fixed.

My second Volvo XC90, and totally enjoyable every day, from the comfortable leather seats, fully appointed and feature rich interior, and fantastic sound system with all of the latest electronic and wireless features integrated into the car. Excellent handling, safe and ergonomic all around. An awesome expression of Swedish design elegance.
