The 2018 Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV that marked Volvo's resurgence. Introduced in 2016 (as a 2016 model), this second-generation XC90 boasts a stylish wagon-like body and is available in trims like Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. Known for its Scandinavian design, luxurious interior, and focus on safety, it offered a compelling alternative to established rivals. The 2018 model had a pricing range from approximately $47,000 to $65,000 depending on trim and options. It stands out for its elegant styling and comfortable ride.
The Good

The 2018 Volvo XC90 offers a blend of performance and luxury. Its comfortable ride and stunning Scandinavian design appeal emotionally, while its focus on safety, respectable fuel efficiency (for its class), and good value proposition appeal practically. Though not a sports car, the XC90 provides adequate power for daily driving and highway cruising. It's a stylish and sensible choice.

The Bad

Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including glitches and slow response times. Air suspension problems can also occur, especially on higher trim levels. While generally reliable, the XC90 can be more expensive to maintain than some competitors. Be sure to inspect the electronics and suspension thoroughly before purchasing a used model. Some early model year XC90s had issues with oil consumption.

What Problems Does the 2018 Volvo XC90 Have?

The 2018 Volvo XC90, while generally a reliable vehicle, has been known to experience certain issues. One frequently reported problem concerns the Sensus infotainment system. Owners often complain about its slow response times, occasional freezing, and glitches with the navigation system. Some have also reported issues with the system's Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Air suspension problems, particularly on the Inscription trim, are another area of concern. Leaks and compressor failures can occur, leading to costly repairs.
Other reported issues include excessive oil consumption, especially in earlier models of the second-generation XC90. Electrical problems, such as sensor malfunctions and issues with the battery, have also been noted. Recalls for the 2018 XC90 have addressed concerns such as potential fuel leaks, issues with the automatic braking system, and problems with the airbags. It's essential to check the vehicle's recall history before purchasing. Long-term reliability can be affected by the complexity of the vehicle's systems, particularly the electronic components. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly are crucial for mitigating these concerns. Potential buyers should research specific recalls and technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to the 2018 model year to be aware of potential problems.

How long will the 2018 Volvo XC90 last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2018 Volvo XC90 can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and addressing any mechanical or electrical issues promptly are crucial. Long-term durability can be affected by the electronic components, particularly the infotainment system, which can become outdated or prone to failure. The air suspension, if equipped, is another potential long-term weakness. Careful maintenance of these systems is essential to maximizing the lifespan of the vehicle. Vehicles driven primarily in harsh climates or subjected to heavy use may experience a shorter lifespan.

Negative Owner Reviews
2nd XC90 Lemon!!!
Junk! Loyal Volvo customer since 2006 (all XC90’s)! I’ve owned 5 XC90’s. Last two new models I’ve purchased have been Lemons. Trusted I was unlucky... and tried one more time. In the shop all the time. Can’t figure out the fix... now in the shop for a month. Customer service is do nothing... Chinese controlled company that does not care...

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Volvo XC90 comes equipped with a generous array of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The centerpiece is the 9-inch Sensus Connect touchscreen infotainment system, which controls many of the vehicle's functions. Standard features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility (though some users report integration issues), Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Higher trims offer a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system, navigation, and a head-up display.
Driver-assistance features include lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control (Pilot Assist). Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available as options.
On the safety front, the XC90 boasts a robust safety cage and numerous airbags. It earned top safety ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), including a Top Safety Pick+ designation. Optional safety features include a 360-degree surround-view camera system and park assist. The Pilot Assist system can assist with steering, acceleration, and braking on well-marked roads, but requires driver attention. Overall, the 2018 XC90 offers a comprehensive suite of safety and technology features, making it a desirable choice for families.

2018 Volvo XC90 Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Volvo XC90 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Volvo XC90 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2018 Volvo XC90 competes against other mid-size luxury SUVs like the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Acura MDX. In terms of performance, the XC90's T6 engine is comparable to the base engines of its rivals, while the T8 offers competitive power and fuel economy. The XC90 excels in interior design and comfort, offering a more Scandinavian and minimalist aesthetic compared to the more traditional luxury of the Mercedes-Benz GLE or the sporty feel of the BMW X5.
Reliability can be a concern for the XC90, with some owners reporting issues with the infotainment system and air suspension, whereas the Acura MDX is typically regarded as more reliable. The Audi Q7 offers a similar level of technology and a slightly sportier driving experience. The Mercedes-Benz GLE provides a more luxurious and refined interior, but at a higher price point. The Acura MDX provides strong value and a reputation for reliability. In terms of price, the XC90 is generally competitive. If reliability is a top priority, the Acura MDX might be a better choice. For a sportier driving experience, consider the BMW X5. If luxury is paramount, the Mercedes-Benz GLE is a strong contender. All options offer various strengths worth considering.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Volvo XC90 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2018 Volvo XC90 is an excellent choice for buyers seeking a stylish, comfortable, and safe mid-size luxury SUV. It's particularly well-suited for families who prioritize safety and appreciate Scandinavian design. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual priorities and budget. A used 2018 XC90 can offer good value, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial, paying close attention to the infotainment system, air suspension (if equipped), and service history. Consider the T6 or T8 models for better performance. The Inscription trim offers the most luxurious features, but be aware of potential air suspension issues. If reliability is a primary concern, exploring alternatives like the Acura MDX is recommended.

Worst car I’ve ever owned

Car was delivered defective. Dealership and corporate refused to make it right. I was treated rudely and disrespectfully. My last car was an Acura MDX. My next one probably will be one too. More comfortable, better service, quieter cabin.

Love Volvo’s on December 28, 2019

I love Volvo’s

I had a small Volvo sedan a few years ago. Excited to be back in a Volvo! I wish it had the self stopping feature when driving. It only works if you have your cruise on.

Most equipped car for the price.

I will make it very short. The car is great, the features are fantastic The price is decent for what you get. The service is horrible and I’ve tried 3 different dealerships. For some reasons when something breaks down. It’s impossible to fix from 1 attempt. It has to be at least 3 attempts to fix anything. And they make you feel like you’re begging them to fix it or asking for charity
