2010 BMW X6 Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.87
Based on 12 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2010 BMW X6 arrived as a unique blend of coupe and SUV, often dubbed a "sports activity coupe." It debuted in 2008 and the 2010 model continued its innovative design. Key trims included the xDrive35i and xDrive50i. New, the X6 ranged roughly from $56,000 to $70,000. Its bold styling, powerful engines, and luxurious interior made it popular, appealing to those seeking sporty performance with SUV practicality.
The Good

The 2010 BMW X6 offers strong performance thanks to its potent engine options, delivering exhilarating acceleration. Its striking design and luxurious interior provide a premium experience. While not the most efficient, it offers decent fuel economy for its class. For practical buyers, it provides decent cargo space and all-wheel drive. Emotionally, it offers a sporty and unique driving experience.

The Bad

The 2010 BMW X6's weaknesses include a cramped rear seat due to the sloping roofline, limiting headroom. Reliability can be a concern, with potential for costly repairs, particularly with the complex all-wheel-drive system and electronic components. Fuel economy, while adequate, isn't stellar. Watch out for oil leaks and transfer case issues.

What Problems Does the 2010 BMW X6 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 BMW X6 often revolve around its complex systems. Oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing, are common. The transfer case, vital for the all-wheel-drive system, is known to fail, leading to expensive repairs. Electrical issues, related to the iDrive system and other electronic components, are also reported.
Long-term reliability concerns stem from the potential for high repair costs associated with these sophisticated systems. The turbochargers, especially in the xDrive50i model, can be prone to failure over time. Suspension components, such as air springs, may also require replacement as the vehicle ages.
While recalls were issued for certain safety-related issues, such as fuel pump failures and airbag inflator problems (check with NHTSA for specific recalls affecting your VIN), the consistent pattern of oil leaks, transfer case issues, and electrical glitches points to a need for thorough pre-purchase inspections and meticulous maintenance. Regular fluid changes and addressing minor issues promptly can help mitigate some of these long-term reliability concerns. Older models should especially be checked for wear and tear on bushings and other rubber components.

How long will the 2010 BMW X6 last?

A 2010 BMW X6, with proper maintenance, can reasonably achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. However, reaching these milestones heavily depends on consistent maintenance, including timely oil changes, fluid flushes, and addressing minor repairs promptly.
Long-term durability weaknesses include potential issues with the turbochargers (especially in the V8 models), the transfer case, and the electronic components. Suspension components and seals are also common failure points as the car ages. Neglecting maintenance or delaying repairs can significantly shorten its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 BMW X6 came equipped with a decent array of tech, entertainment, and safety features for its time. Standard features included the iDrive infotainment system, which controlled audio, navigation (if equipped), and vehicle settings. The base audio system was a premium sound setup, with optional upgrades available. Safety features included stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a full complement of airbags.
Optional features expanded the tech and safety offerings. These included a navigation system, a rear-seat entertainment system, a heads-up display, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and a side-view camera system. The optional navigation system integrated with the iDrive system, providing real-time traffic updates and turn-by-turn directions.
The 2010 BMW X6's crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA varied. It is recommended to check these agencies' websites for specific ratings for this model year, as they may not be comprehensive. However, BMW generally prioritizes safety in its vehicles, and the X6's suite of standard and optional safety features offered a good level of protection for occupants. The sophisticated stability and traction control systems contribute to safer handling in adverse conditions.

2010 BMW X6 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 BMW X6 ranged from approximately $56,000 to $70,000, depending on the trim and options. As of 2024, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and location. The X6 has experienced significant depreciation due to factors like age, mileage, and the higher cost of maintenance and repairs associated with luxury vehicles. Resale value is influenced by the car's overall condition, maintenance history, and the presence of desirable options. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices.

2010 BMW X6 Cost of Ownership

The 2010 BMW X6 is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are typically higher due to its luxury status and performance capabilities. Fuel costs can be significant, particularly with the V8 model. Maintenance and repairs are more expensive than average, given the complexity of its systems and the cost of BMW parts. Long-term ownership requires a budget for potential issues like oil leaks, transfer case problems, and electrical repairs. It is not an economical choice.

2010 BMW X6 Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 BMW X6 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 BMW X6 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2010 BMW X6 competed with SUVs like the Acura ZDX (similar coupe-like styling), Infiniti FX, and Porsche Cayenne. Compared to the Acura ZDX, the X6 offered more powerful engine options and a more luxurious interior, but the ZDX was arguably more reliable. Against the Infiniti FX, the X6 provided a more refined driving experience and a more upscale interior, but the FX was typically more affordable.
Compared to the Porsche Cayenne, the X6 offered a similar level of performance but at a slightly lower price point. However, the Cayenne generally provided better handling and a more practical cargo area. In terms of reliability, the X6 typically ranked lower than both the Acura and Infiniti.
Alternatives to consider include the BMW X5 (more practical SUV with similar features), the Porsche Cayenne (better handling and more cargo space), or the Acura MDX/Infiniti QX70 (more reliable options). If performance is the top priority, the Cayenne is a strong contender. For better reliability and lower running costs, the Acura MDX or Infiniti QX70 are worth considering. The X6 appeals primarily to buyers prioritizing its unique styling and BMW brand prestige, accepting potential compromises in practicality and reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 BMW X6 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2010 BMW X6 is ideal for buyers who prioritize unique styling and a sporty driving experience over practicality and rock-solid reliability. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history and have budgeted for potential repairs.
The xDrive35i is generally a more sensible choice than the xDrive50i due to its better fuel economy and potentially lower maintenance costs. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is *essential* to identify any existing or potential problems. If you need maximum cargo space or prioritize long-term reliability, other SUVs would be a better fit. Go in with your eyes open to the ownership costs.

best used car we've ever bought.

We bought a Canadian-Market 2010 BMW X6 xDrive50i and I must say, this is the best used car we've ever bought. I've always wanted a BMW with the N63 V8, and luckily I saw this. We rushed to the dealership and quickly signed the papers. Best decision ever. It rides so smoothly, the soft-closing doors are super helpful, and the rumbling 4.4L V8 is just wonderful. 10/10 would recommend.

FAST for a V6

This was a car I had not even considered when I sold my Porsche 911 Turbo -it was simply at the dealership at the time and I got a good deal on it. But, this X6 has grown on me - it's fast, comfortable, quiet, reliable and gets compliments everywhere I go - almost as much as my Porsche 911 Turbo (almost) Very few of them on the road - which I have no idea why - they are not cheap new (mine was 69K) but they are far superior to just about any "sport SUV" out there.... Just a great car.

Beast of the road

I have nothing bad to say about this joy, but let me think... Okay, rear visibility especially in snow and rain is not the best. The wide and perfect angle of the side view mirrors compensates for that minor flaw. This X6 5.0 is a beast on the road. Handling is precise, ride quality superior, controls are perfectly laid out, lots of room (except it's a 4-seater), road visibility is good, and acceleration is quick like lightening. Driving this massive vehicle I have confidence on the road in any kind of weather or road conditions. Love my comfort seats and head up display. It's the best BMW I have ever owned and I have owned more than a dozen with two late models curently in the garage. It's fun to drive all the time. Oh, average MPG on highway is about 28-30 at 70+ MPH. Not bad for a twin turbo 8 cylinder.

X6 50i V8

This car is for the driving enthusiasts. It's not a typical SUV. It's sporty, and moves better and much faster than some sport cars like Camaro, Mustang, etc. I am only speaking for the V8 engine. There is enough headroom and legroom in the front for me at exactly 6ft tall, with enough room in the back for someone my height as well. It met my needs for a family of 4. If you have not owned a BMW before, and want an X6, keep in mind that you have to use Premium Gas at all times. No lower grade because you don't have enough money. You will run the risk or spending much more for repairs if you use the cheap stuff. For the driving enthusiasts...man, you WILL love the handing and the power/speed of this car. Wheww, such a beast! I prefer the older body that ended at 2014, the newer body looks too narrow and just looks like a big X4. The X6M from 2015 to present has better Aesthetics. Good luck on your purchase when you go for this powerhouse. I looked out my window every day for 2 years admiring how nice she was.

It's a beast!

Nice smooth driving. Handles great. If it didn't have the back up camera, visibility would be poor when backing up, but the camera makes it so easy. It takes some getting used to.
