What Problems Does the 2009 Volvo XC90 Have?

The 2009 Volvo XC90, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Transmission issues, particularly with the Aisin Warner transmissions, are a concern, often manifesting as rough shifting or slipping. Electrical problems, including issues with the climate control system and various sensors, are also common. Oil consumption can be high, especially in the V8 models, potentially leading to engine damage if not monitored.

Suspension components, such as bushings and control arms, tend to wear out over time, resulting in noisy rides and handling issues. Some owners have reported issues with the power steering system. Recalls for the 2009 XC90 were issued related to potential fuel pump relay failures and brake light switch malfunctions, so checking the vehicle's recall history is crucial.

Long-term reliability depends heavily on maintenance. Neglecting scheduled services can exacerbate existing weaknesses. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic are highly recommended to identify potential problems and assess the vehicle's overall condition. Regular fluid changes (transmission, engine oil, coolant) and addressing minor issues promptly can help prolong the lifespan of the vehicle. Earlier model years (2003-2006) had more reported transmission problems than later years.

How long will the 2009 Volvo XC90 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Volvo XC90 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report over 15 years of service. Long-term durability depends heavily on consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid services, and addressing suspension wear. Weaknesses over time include potential transmission issues, electrical glitches, and increased oil consumption. The AWD system also requires periodic maintenance. Neglecting these areas can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters.
Positive Owner Reviews

Good on gas. Never had a problem mechanically other than routine tune ups and oil changes. It was very good and comfortable on road trips.
EJR
Very reliable, comfortable and safe. We have owned this vehicle since 2009 and cannot find a reason to purchase a new one. We are very happy with this vehicle.
Buyer
I have owned Volvo?s for 40 years and this is the first XC90. It is a great car to drive. The only problems with this car is the transmission. It is a sealed unit so they say it can?t be serviced but it can. Most transmission shops will do it. If you have regular service, it will last a long time. I love my XC90 and take it everywhere, even off-road.
Negative Owner Reviews

This is a very safe car for your family. Very reliable performs great in all weather conditions warm, cold, snow, and rain. I would recommend this card to anyone.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Volvo XC90 features a decent array of tech for its time, including a premium sound system with CD player and available satellite radio. Higher trims may include a navigation system and a rear-seat entertainment system with DVD player. Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern vehicles, but it does offer optional features like rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring.

Safety is a key strength. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and front, side, and side curtain airbags. Optional features include integrated child booster seats. The 2009 Volvo XC90 received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) at the time, reflecting Volvo's commitment to safety. While it lacks modern features like lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control, its robust construction and comprehensive airbag system provide a solid level of protection. The infotainment system is dated by today's standards, lacking smartphone integration. However, the emphasis on safety and comfortable ride makes it appealing to families.

2009 Volvo XC90 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Volvo XC90 ranged from approximately $37,000 to $50,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The XC90 has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and the introduction of newer models with advanced features. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, and mileage. Models with lower mileage and a well-documented service record command higher prices. The V8 models can hold slightly more value due to their rarity and performance.

2009 Volvo XC90 Cost of Ownership

Long-term ownership of a 2009 Volvo XC90 can be moderately costly. Insurance premiums are average for its class. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V8 engine. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the vehicle's age and potential for specialized parts. Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent costly repairs. While not the most economical vehicle to own, careful maintenance can help manage long-term expenses. Budgeting for potential repairs is advisable.

costly to maintain

The car looked great when i viewed it the first time and felt ok when i test drove it for a few miles and after purchase all types of warning lights came on including the check engine light. The make and model of the car is good, i just feel like the dealership did not disclose all the issues and tricked me into buying it

The 2009 Volvo XC90: Comfort, Luxury, Versatility

I purchased my 2009 Volvo XC90 last year to serve the purpose of a comfortable commuter car, and considering I payed next to nothing for the vehicle itself, my expectations weren't too high. However, after only owning the vehicle for a very short time, I found myself thoroughly impressed with the car. It became apparent to me that Volvo built their cars with a different mindset then their german rivals, as none of the features that my Volvo was equipped with were revolutionary for the time: heated seats, automatic climate, rear seat entertainment, etc. All very nice options to have, but they could be just as easily had on an X5. However, getting behind the driver's seat of the Volvo is completely different from a BMW or Audi, as the car feels just as heavy as it is. Rather than trying to mask the weight of the car, Volvo chose the path of embracing it - and it worked. Driving the XC90 is like driving a comfortable, leather-lined tank: it's confidence inspiring not in terms of speed, but road presence. To sum it up, I would absolutely recommend the XC90 to anyone in the market for a quality used SUV, as Swedish engineering proved itself to be a pleasant surprise to a German-biased individual such as myself.

Most reliable car I've ever owned.

Most cargo space in any vehicle I've owned. Not known for its performance but, has exceeded expectations for familial needs. The third row is perfect for when family or friends are in town or your children's friends need to come along.

Great Family SUV

We loved this truck. It was great and never down. Sure it is heavy and under-powered, but it was safe and reliable like a labrador retriever.

Safe, Reliable SUV

This car is safe and very well built. It handles well and is very reliable. It could be a little lighter as its a heavy car but the 3.2L engine is more than capable of getting up and going. It rides smooth and is roomy inside.
