What Problems Does the 2006 Mitsubishi Montero Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2006 Mitsubishi Montero include issues with the automatic transmission, particularly slipping or harsh shifting. Electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors or power windows, have also been reported. Rust, especially in areas exposed to road salt, is a common long-term reliability concern, affecting the undercarriage and body panels. The climate control system, particularly the blend door actuator, can sometimes fail. Older Monteros, including the 2006 model, can experience issues with the fuel pump and associated components. While there haven't been widespread recalls specific to the 2006 model year, it's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls related to safety or emissions. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and rust prevention measures, is essential to mitigate these long-term reliability concerns. Specifically inspecting the 4WD system for proper engagement and disengagement is also recommended, as issues with the transfer case can arise over time. Finally, check the service history of any used 2006 Montero to assess the frequency and type of maintenance performed.

How long will the 2006 Mitsubishi Montero last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2006 Mitsubishi Montero can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report achieving this milestone with proper care. However, long-term durability hinges heavily on maintenance. Weaknesses include potential rust issues, transmission wear, and electrical glitches, as noted earlier. Regular fluid changes (engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, etc.) are crucial. Addressing minor repairs promptly prevents them from escalating into major, costly problems. Models neglected in maintenance will likely have a significantly shorter lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Mitsubishi Montero features standard tech and entertainment for its time. Base models included a CD player and automatic climate control. Higher trims like the Limited added a premium audio system and a sunroof. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles; it mainly included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS). Safety features included front airbags and side airbags. Optional features included a rear parking sensor. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA are somewhat mixed; while some tests received good scores, others were less impressive. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings are similarly mixed. The Montero lacked advanced features like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring, which are common in contemporary SUVs. Built-in navigation was an available option on the Limited trim. The entertainment system was basic, focusing on audio playback rather than connectivity features like Bluetooth (which was not standard). Overall, the tech and safety features were adequate for 2006 but fall short of modern expectations. Buyers should prioritize a well-maintained vehicle with properly functioning safety systems.

2006 Mitsubishi Montero Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Mitsubishi Montero ranged from approximately $35,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim level. On the used market, prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, contingent on condition, mileage, and location. The Montero has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, fuel economy, and brand perception. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has 4WD. Models with lower mileage and well-documented maintenance records command higher prices. Rust-free examples are also highly desirable, significantly impacting resale value.

2006 Mitsubishi Montero Cost of Ownership

The 2006 Mitsubishi Montero is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel costs are high due to its relatively poor fuel economy. Maintenance can be moderate if performed regularly; however, repairs can be expensive, especially for the transmission or electrical systems. Long-term ownership costs can escalate if preventative maintenance is neglected. While not the most economical choice, its initial purchase price on the used market may offset some of these ongoing costs. Budgeting for potential repairs is crucial.

How Does the 2006 Mitsubishi Montero Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2006 Mitsubishi Montero competed with SUVs like the Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Pathfinder, and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Compared to the 4Runner, the Montero offers a similar level of off-road capability but generally lags behind in long-term reliability and resale value. The Pathfinder is comparable in terms of features and price, but the Montero's styling might appeal to some buyers more. The Grand Cherokee provides a wider range of engine options and a more luxurious interior, but its reliability can be questionable. In terms of price, the Montero is often more affordable on the used market than the 4Runner. However, given its age, reliability concerns, and fuel economy, a carefully inspected Toyota 4Runner (if within budget) might be a better alternative for long-term ownership. The Nissan Xterra offers similar off-road capability at a lower price point but sacrifices some interior space. If off-roading is a primary concern, and budget is tight, the Montero remains a viable option, but a thorough inspection and realistic expectations regarding maintenance are essential. For daily driving and reliability, the 4Runner is often the preferred choice if the budget allows.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Mitsubishi Montero a Good Wagon?

The 2006 Mitsubishi Montero is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a capable off-road SUV with a spacious interior. It is only worth buying used, given its age and depreciation. Prioritize the Limited trim for added features like leather seats and a sunroof. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial, focusing on rust, transmission health, and electrical systems. It's suitable for those who prioritize off-road capability over fuel economy and are prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. If long-term reliability and low running costs are paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota 4Runner. Buyers must be realistic about the age and potential issues associated with a used 2006 Montero.

Simply The Best Vehicle I Have Ever Owned!

This is my 2nd Montero. I bought the 1st one new. I am considering purchasing a 3rd one. I hate that they are not still making them here. I know everything about this SUV. With regular maintenance, there is hardly anything bad to say about it. I simply love it. I currently have 220,000 miles on mine.

I love this SUV!

This my third Mitsubishi Montero, first 2006. I have homes in Dallas and Colorado. It handles very well on the Hwy. and is indomitable in the mountains where 4 wheel low lock is a must sometimes. It is good looking, especially with the right size wheels and tires that balance the look. It never breaks, the reliability is ridiculously . I have a half million miles on Mitsubishi Montero's without a major repair. What other SUV can do that? Others may give you a more luxurious ride you will enjoy while being stuck in the snow but this 2006 montero is good looking, comfortable, maneuverable and supremely reliable.

Most Underrated SUV Ever

This is my 3rd Montero and if they were still importing them, I would buy a newer one. These are made in Japan with 99% Japan content and made to last. Roomy, tall greenhouse for great visibility, 7 passenger comfort, independent suspension and the best 4WD system in this type of vehicle. Find a rust-free and well-maintained example and you can drive it 300,000 miles.

Not so subtle perfection. Great car.

Exceeded expectations of an SUV. Reliable transportation. Minimum repairs. Traveled extensively, rain, snow, rough roads, and Montero took on the challenge. Only regret, vehicle no longer sold new in USA.

My Colorado tank!

I owned a 1991 Montero LS and have been sick ever since I traded it in for a smaller, more economical daily commuter where capabilities needed to deal with snow and getting to work dependably. My Montero had everything we needed for several days in the woods needed to decompress. The driver's front seat was a "trucker seat" that softened the ride in off-road conditions. That is sorely missed on competitive models. The seat was the best thing for my back-if I had any kinks they were long gone by the time I got home from work or gym. I was in one "front-ender" once and even the investigating officer stated the CSPD needed "some trucks like mine!" It is a tank built to never die! The biggest mistake Mitsubishi made was to scale down the Montero to the Sport and hope the public would not notice. We noticed!!! The full-sized Montero LS is a tank built for life as an Urban Gorilla.

2006 Ltd.

My 2006 only has 53,500 miles, and is better than the current Fore Runner in every category, especially comfort, style and road noise. My MPG is better than similar SUV's I have had in the past (Fore runner and Land Cruiser). I have had folks ask me if I am ready to sell it, and as I now search for a larger SUV, I have great doubts about giving it up, as I know that the next one will drink more gas, however, I need larger capacity with towing ability, which you do not get from any 3.8 6 cylinder. This SUV is hard to beat.

Substitute Lexus LX 470

I really wanted an LX-470. I had traveled long-distance with a hunting buddy and his was extremely nice, no question. The problem w/any Lexus is the premium you must pay to get even a decent one. Popularity has a definite cost. Maintenence and fuel costs aren't insignificant either (w/$4plus gas). My Montero Limited is everything that LX-470 was (solid, mega-dependable and competent 4X4, 7-passenger, lots of luxury (heated leather seats, DVD player, etc) plus it has a V-6 which is noticeably easier on gas (17-18MPG vrs 12-14MPG). The smaller engine means that it's no drag-racer (which may be partly why it isn't imported here anymore, '06 was the last year) but that isn't what I needed. The price was also a big plus. I bought what was a very expensive car new, for mere pennies on the dollar (nobody seems to know what these cars are!). And, at 21K miles it's still under the factory warrenty for a few more months. Lifespan on it should go 150K plus easily. What a value!!!

Montero 2006

This is the third Montero I have bought, the first being a used 1994 SR. These vehicles are ideal for the kind of off-road driving I regularly do, and by far outperform any of it's competitors. The '06 is luxurious, quiet with adequate power and economy. The vehicle is somewhat susceptible to crosswinds, but very few high profile SUV's are immune to this.
