The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV, part of the second generation launched in 2017. Key trims include the base 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, Premium Plus, and the top-tier Turbo and Turbo Signature. Known for its upscale interior and engaging driving dynamics, the CX-5 stands out with its near-luxury feel at a more accessible price point. Pricing typically ranges from the mid $20,000s to the low $40,000s, depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2022 CX-5 excels in delivering a premium driving experience without the premium price. It offers agile handling and a responsive engine, appealing to driving enthusiasts. Its comfortable and well-appointed interior provides a refined experience, while its solid reliability ratings and reasonable fuel economy make it a practical choice for everyday use. The elegant design adds to its overall appeal.

The Bad

Some common criticisms of the 2022 CX-5 include its smaller cargo area compared to some competitors, and the rear seat legroom might be tight for taller passengers. The base engine can feel underpowered when fully loaded. The infotainment system, while improved, may still take some getting used to. Watch for potential issues with the cylinder deactivation system on some models.

What Problems Does the 2022 Mazda CX-5 Have?

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 generally enjoys good reliability ratings. However, some owners have reported minor issues. One area of concern can be the cylinder deactivation system on models equipped with it. Some drivers have noticed unusual vibrations or noises during the transition between two-cylinder and four-cylinder operation. While not widespread, it's something to be aware of and monitor.

Recalls for the 2022 CX-5 have been relatively infrequent, but it's always best to check the NHTSA website for the latest information and any applicable recalls based on the VIN of the specific vehicle you're considering. Some reports mention infotainment system glitches, such as screen freezes or connectivity problems, though these are usually resolved with software updates.

Long-term reliability concerns are minimal, with most owners reporting positive experiences. Proper maintenance, including timely oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial for ensuring the vehicle's longevity. Some owners have noted that the paint can be susceptible to chipping, especially on models with darker colors. Overall, the 2022 CX-5 is considered a reliable vehicle, but it's essential to be aware of the potential issues and address them promptly.

How long will the 2022 Mazda CX-5 last?

With regular maintenance and responsible driving habits, a 2022 Mazda CX-5 can easily achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Owners typically report 10-15 years of reliable service. Long-term durability is generally good, with the engine and transmission proving robust. However, as with any vehicle, neglecting maintenance can shorten its lifespan. Potential weaknesses over time could include wear and tear on suspension components, rubber seals, and interior trim. Keeping up with scheduled maintenance, addressing minor issues promptly, and avoiding harsh driving conditions will maximize the vehicle's lifespan.

Great gas mileage. Interior is not overly cluttered. Exterior is stylish. Great value for the money. Rear seating has plenty of leg room. Would recommend
John
I own a 21 Carbon Edition. Great vehicle. And worth every penny. I came from owning only Hondas. Traded in a 2021 Accord Sport SE with 7000 miles. I have 22k miles and have not any issues so far. I love the color, step in height, the look, the interior, the exterior. Average 29-31 on the highway. Best decision I've made concerning buying a new vehicle
Alvaro
Best and transmission is normal excellent interior is very luxury for the model, excellent quality interior and exterior, recommend for family small, motor is high performance in sport drive mode
Negative Owner Reviews

I owned a Mazda 3 which was superior to 2021 CX-5 in many ways. First my "3" had the 2.0 engine and got 39mpg on the day i traded it in ( 147K miles) The CX-5 with 2.5 poor mileage at 26.5mpg. Stock radio is a joke very poor quality with no CDplayer, no tape, or inputs to add to radio. Seats are very firm, could be softer. Engine has more engine noise than the 2.0 engine. I enjoy the added space but discounts MPG. A very high quality auto in its assembly and finish. This is my 3rd Mazda auto.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

2022 Mazda CX-5 Prices and Market Value

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 had a starting MSRP in the mid $20,000s and could reach the low $40,000s for the top-tier Turbo Signature trim when new. Current used market prices typically range from the low $20,000s to the high $30,000s, depending on the trim, mileage, and condition. The CX-5 holds its value relatively well compared to some competitors, thanks to its reputation for reliability and its premium features. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level (Turbo models tend to hold value better), and the presence of a clean title. Lower mileage and well-maintained vehicles will command higher prices.

Maintenance costs are also relatively low, with routine services like oil changes and tire rotations being affordable. Repairs are generally infrequent and not overly expensive. Overall, the CX-5 offers a good balance of affordability and premium features, making it a cost-effective choice for long-term ownership. However, premium fuel for the Turbo models will increase fuel costs.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Mazda CX-5 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 competes with popular compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, and Hyundai Tucson. In terms of performance, the CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience than the CR-V and RAV4, but the Forester excels in off-road capability. The Tucson offers a longer warranty and a more modern interior design. In terms of features, the CX-5 provides a near-luxury experience at a competitive price, often exceeding the base models of its rivals. Reliability is comparable across most models, with the RAV4 and CR-V having a slight edge. Price-wise, the CX-5 is generally competitive, especially when considering its upscale features.

Alternatives: The Honda CR-V offers more cargo space and similar reliability. The Toyota RAV4 boasts excellent fuel economy and a strong resale value. The Subaru Forester provides standard all-wheel drive and a focus on safety. The Hyundai Tucson offers a striking design and a long warranty. If driving dynamics are a priority, the CX-5 is a strong choice. If maximum cargo space or fuel efficiency is more important, the CR-V or RAV4 might be better options. If off-road capability is desired, the Forester is a good alternative.

A used 2022 CX-5 can be a great value, especially if you can find a well-maintained model with low mileage. Consider the Premium or Premium Plus trims for a luxurious experience without the high price tag of the Turbo Signature. If you need maximum cargo space, other options might be more suitable. Ultimately, the CX-5 offers a compelling blend of style, performance, and value.

Love our Mazdas!

We have owned our 2022 CX-5 Turbo for 10 moths and it is a great vehicle. Our previous SUV was an Acura RDX Advance. It too was great but this Mazda is of a higher quality and $10-$15,000 less when purchased new. Every once in a while the doors don’t lock when I walk away (I have it set up to do so) and that is the only issue I have had in 10 months and 10,000 miles. I highly recommend any Mazda product. We also own a Γ’β‚¬Λœ21 Miata RF, have owned several Miatas along with a Mazda6 Signature and a CX-9 Grand Touring. All have been great vehicles.

Great

Have had our 2022 for 8 months now. It's been great, the fit/finish and ride are superior, IMHO, then my previous CRV and Rav4 vehicles. The only thing I would like to see is a touch screen entertainment center rather then the manual knob. The interior is well laid out with quality accents, feel and quiet, again far superior to our previous SUVs. So far it's been mechanically sound with no issues and we are enjoying it very much.

0/10. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS VEHICLE.

DO NOT RECOMMEND. This car has given nothing but issues. It has break system failure, screen glitching, and a pinhole in the engine due to Mazda failing to remove all bubbles from the molds when putting the car together. I have spent over 8,000 in repairs so far and its a 2019.

Very Happy with my 2022 CX5!!!

Very Happy with my recent purchase of my 2022 CX5 (preferred package). Although I haven't had it for a long time yet, I can feel this compact suv is built well and runs smoothly. The interior (white parchment) is very classy with plenty of accessories and features. The seats are very comfortable. The exterior (in my opinion) is two-fold. The front is very stylish and sleek, whereas the rest of the body is just rather ordinary. But I like that. I don't like cars/suvs that overdo it with exterior styling. Engine wise, this vehicle has adequate acceleration. It will not beat a porsche, but that's okay. I need the taming after driving my Acura RSX for many years. I opted out of the more premium packages because I did not want a turbo engine. The maintenance and repair costs are more for those engines. Overall, I would definitely recommend this vehicle. Do your studies. Plenty of reviews/test drives on Youtube. Compare vehicles, costs, packages. You'll find that this one is rated highly.
