The 2005 BMW Z4 marked a significant evolution in BMW's roadster lineup. It's a two-door, two-seat convertible featuring a distinctive design penned by Chris Bangle's team. The first-generation Z4 (E85) was produced from 2002-2008. Key trims include the 2.5i and 3.0i, differentiated by their engines. When new, prices ranged from around $34,000 to $43,000. Its combination of sporty handling, open-top driving experience, and stylish design made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2005 BMW Z4 offers a blend of sporty performance and distinctive design. Emotionally, it provides an exhilarating open-top driving experience. Practically, it offers decent fuel efficiency for a sports car, relatively comfortable ride (especially compared to other roadsters), and can be a good value on the used market. Handling is a major plus.

The Bad

The 2005 BMW Z4 has some known weaknesses. The electric power steering system can be prone to failure. The soft top mechanism can also develop issues. Additionally, some owners report problems with the cooling system and oil leaks. Pre-purchase inspections are crucial.

What Problems Does the 2005 BMW Z4 Have?

The 2005 BMW Z4, like many cars of its age, has some frequently reported problems. One of the most common issues is related to the electric power steering (EPS) system, which can fail, leading to heavy steering or complete loss of power assist. This is an expensive repair. The soft top mechanism is another area of concern, with potential issues including motor failure, hydraulic leaks, and sensor malfunctions. The cooling system can be prone to leaks, especially from the expansion tank and radiator hoses. Oil leaks are also relatively common, often from the valve cover gasket or oil filter housing.
Recalls for the 2005 Z4 were mainly related to safety concerns, such as issues with the fuel pump or airbags.
Long-term reliability can be affected by the age of the rubber components, leading to leaks and other failures. Proper maintenance and addressing issues promptly are crucial to maximizing the lifespan of a 2005 Z4. Some model years might exhibit slightly higher instances of specific issues, so researching specific VINs is always recommended before purchase.

How long will the 2005 BMW Z4 last?

Given its age, a 2005 BMW Z4 will likely have accumulated significant mileage. Expect to see examples ranging from 100,000 to 200,000+ miles. With regular maintenance, these cars can last well over 20 years. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglected Z4s will exhibit issues sooner, especially with cooling and lubrication systems. Weaknesses over time include bushing wear, suspension component degradation, and potential rust in certain climates. Cars with detailed service records generally offer better long-term prospects.

This is a 2005 BMW Z4 purchased in 2013 with 48,000 miles. This has to be one of the best cars BMW ever made. It has a strong engine. It is super fun to drive. The fastest i have taken her up to is about 120 miles an hour. and it didn't even feel like I was going a hundred and twenty. That's on the straight away. However this car performs stupendously in the curves! I will say that since I purchased her I've had to replace the top motor. Valve cover gasket and numerous other things. So this car is not a cheap toy but everything I have put into her is well worth it because I drive around with a smile on my face. Great little convertible! She now has 88,000 miles and as long as she is maintained she will be going strong for quite some time.

Love the styling and that it’s a BMW. Lots of well thought out features. All leather interior, convertible, great paint job! The alloy wheels really set off the overall looks of the car.

This car is perfect. It drives beautifully and is awesome to look at. It has a big car feel, but it is still a sports car. Great ride!
Negative Owner Reviews
Dje68rn
The cost of repairs are ridiculous. No recalls for common “expensive” known issues. I paid $9200 for this car in good used condition and have already spent $5000 in repairs for common known issues. First major issue was the convertible top motors now an electric power steering failure.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 BMW Z4's technology reflects its era. Standard features include a premium sound system with a CD player. Optional entertainment upgrades included a navigation system, but by today's standards, it's quite dated.
Driver-assistance features were limited; it primarily focused on the driving experience rather than advanced tech. The Z4 includes standard safety features like anti-lock brakes (ABS), dynamic stability control (DSC), and front airbags. Side airbags were optional.
The 2005 Z4 did not have modern driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) show the Z4 achieving good results for frontal and side impacts. However, rollover ratings were not as high due to the convertible design.
Remember that technology has advanced considerably since 2005, so don't expect modern infotainment or driver-assistance systems in this vehicle.

2005 BMW Z4 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 BMW Z4 2.5i started around $34,000, while the 3.0i was closer to $43,000. On today's used market, expect to find them priced between $6,000 and $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors influencing resale value include overall condition, service history, optional equipment, and location. Low-mileage, well-maintained examples with desirable options command a premium.

2005 BMW Z4 Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2005 BMW Z4 can be moderately expensive. Insurance costs will vary based on driving record and location, but expect them to be higher than a standard sedan. Fuel costs are reasonable if you stick to the recommended premium fuel. Maintenance and repair can be the most significant expense, given the age of the vehicle and the potential for component failures. Regular maintenance is critical to prevent costly repairs. Overall, it's not the most economical car to own, but with diligent care, costs can be managed.

How Does the 2005 BMW Z4 Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2005 BMW Z4 competed with cars like the Mercedes-Benz SLK, Audi TT, and Porsche Boxster. In terms of performance, the Z4 offers a sporty and engaging driving experience. The Boxster generally offers superior handling, while the SLK is more luxurious. Feature-wise, the Z4 is comparable to its rivals, though newer models offer more advanced technology.
Reliability is a mixed bag; the Z4 can be prone to some issues, while the Boxster also has known problems. The SLK is generally considered more reliable, but can be more expensive to repair. Price-wise, the Z4 is often more affordable on the used market than the Boxster.
Alternatives to consider include the Mazda MX-5 Miata for a more affordable and reliable roadster experience. The Honda S2000 is another option with exceptional performance but can be hard to find in good condition. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and budget.

Ranks #122 Convertible

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 BMW Z4 a Good Convertible?

The 2005 BMW Z4 is ideal for driving enthusiasts who enjoy open-top motoring and are willing to accept some maintenance challenges. It's worth buying if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history and pass a pre-purchase inspection. Avoid neglected cars at all costs. The 3.0i offers better performance, but the 2.5i can be a good value. Given the age, buying used is the only option. Be prepared for potential repairs and factor those costs into your budget. It's a fun car, but not for those seeking low-maintenance transportation.

Update to my July 2009 review

The car is now 14 years old - and I’m still as happy with it as I was for my review here ten years ago. In fact, I’ve shown it in 6 of the 8 annual Deutsche Marques show at the Gilmore Car Museum in SW Michigan. I’ve put three sets of tires on it in the 10 years that I’ve owned it (replaced due to time and 50% used) - because I like the great traction that Summer-Only RFT’s provide. It how has 60K miles; and the only repair issue was a drive axle pinion bolt (not expensive) - and I changed the transmission and drive axle lubricant once already. Engine belt were changed this spring, and I changed spark plugs - just ‘cuz - at 50 K miles. The car is rock solid. It rides smooth - only on asphalt - and I can drive over a buffalo nickel and tell if it was heads or tails - but the agility is worth the stiffness. The only thing I’m concerned with is that if someone drives into me, I’ll be sick having to accept the ridiculously-low retail prices that are shown on this and other car sites. While I wouldn’t part with it at those prices, I heartily recommend that if you can find one at those prices - Buy It!

I own it now. Drive and style can't be beat.

Car has style, power and beauty. Design is ageless. Handles like a dream. Very well maintained. Beautiful color not normally seen on a BMW. Very unique.

Great sports car without going broke

Fun car to drive. Great car if you like to do your own maintenance. Lot's of DIY help available, parts reasonably priced, limited number of special tools. It has its quirks, but a very reliable, solid car.

Fun to drive and powerful!

I?ve only owed this car for a few weeks, so can?t comment on reliability. I will say it is the most fun car to drive I?ve ever driven. Car goes like stink, has power throughout the power curve, and handles like a dream. I have been unable to make the tires squeal around corners, believe me I?ve tried! It?s my weekend fun car, I got insurance thru Hagerty for about $400 a year. Trunk space is pretty good for a roadster, but interior storage is lacking. Cup holders are pretty flimsy. List price new is high, but you can get great deals on used ones. Run flat tires, no spare tire.

Great Relatively Inexpensive Sports Car

Enjoyed riding in the car. Handles very well though a bit weak on power. Great to work on and no special tools required for most maintenance. Interior is a bit sparse but find it very comfortable (I am only 5'9"). I very much like the classic sports car look of the car though some do not agree.
