The 2001 Porsche Boxster, part of the first generation (986), is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster that revitalized Porsche. It offered an entry point to the brand with its sporty handling and iconic Porsche styling. Key trims included the base Boxster and the Boxster S. Pricing when new ranged from around $42,000 to $51,000. Its affordability and open-top driving experience made it popular.
The Good

The 2001 Boxster offers sharp, responsive handling that appeals to emotional buyers. It's a genuine Porsche sports car. Practical advantages include decent fuel economy for its class, relative reliability (when properly maintained), and a comfortable ride for a sports car. It presents good value on the used market.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2001 Boxster include the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing, which can fail catastrophically. Rear main seal (RMS) leaks are also common. The plastic rear window on the convertible top can crack. Check for coolant leaks and ensure proper maintenance records are available.

What Problems Does the 2001 Porsche Boxster Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2001 Porsche Boxster center around engine reliability. The most significant concern is the Intermediate Shaft (IMS) bearing failure. This bearing supports the intermediate shaft, and if it fails, it can cause catastrophic engine damage. While not all Boxsters experience this issue, it's a well-known potential problem, and preventative replacement is a common recommendation.

Rear Main Seal (RMS) leaks are another relatively common issue, resulting in oil leaks. Coolant leaks, particularly from the coolant expansion tank, are also frequently reported. The convertible top's plastic rear window is prone to cracking or clouding over time.

Electrical issues, such as problems with the convertible top mechanism or window regulators, can also occur. Suspension components, like control arms and bushings, may wear out over time, affecting handling and ride quality.

Recalls for the 2001 Boxster were issued for issues like headlight malfunctions and potential fuel leaks. However, these issues were typically addressed by Porsche at the time.

Long-term reliability depends heavily on maintenance. Regular oil changes, coolant flushes, and inspections are crucial. Addressing potential problems early can prevent more significant and costly repairs down the road. The IMS bearing and RMS are particular areas to watch closely.

How long will the 2001 Porsche Boxster last?

A well-maintained 2001 Porsche Boxster can easily reach 150,000-200,000 miles or more. Years of service can extend beyond 20 years with proper care. Many are still on the road today. Durability is generally good, especially with consistent maintenance habits.

However, long-term weaknesses include the aforementioned IMS bearing, which can lead to engine failure if not addressed. Suspension components and rubber seals/hoses will degrade over time and require replacement. The convertible top material is also susceptible to wear and tear.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2001 Porsche Boxster features technology that was standard for its time. Base models included a premium sound system with a CD player, power windows, and power locks. Optional entertainment features included a Bose sound system upgrade.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. It lacked advanced systems like adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning. However, it did offer antilock brakes (ABS), which were a crucial safety feature.

Safety features included dual front airbags. Side airbags were an optional feature. The Boxster was designed with a strong chassis and predictable handling, contributing to occupant safety.

Optional features included cruise control, heated seats, automatic climate control, and a wind deflector to reduce turbulence in the cabin when the top was down.

Crash test ratings for the 2001 Porsche Boxster from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are limited. As an older sports car, it didn't undergo the same rigorous testing as modern vehicles. However, contemporary reviews praised its structural rigidity and safety features for the time.

2001 Porsche Boxster Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2001 Porsche Boxster had an MSRP ranging from approximately $42,000 to $51,000, depending on the trim and options. On the used market, prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and service history.

Depreciation has been significant, but Boxsters have held their value relatively well compared to some other sports cars. Factors affecting resale value include the presence of the IMS bearing issue (cars with a replaced or upgraded bearing command a premium), overall condition, mileage, and the presence of desirable options. Well-maintained examples with complete service records fetch higher prices. Color also plays a factor, with classic Porsche colors being more desirable.

2001 Porsche Boxster Cost of Ownership

The 2001 Porsche Boxster is not economical to own. Insurance costs can be moderate to high, depending on driving record and coverage. Fuel costs are reasonable for a sports car, but premium fuel is required. Maintenance and repair costs are significant. Porsche parts and specialized labor can be expensive. The potential for major repairs, like engine or transmission issues, adds to the long-term ownership costs. Budgeting for preventative maintenance is essential to minimize potential expenses.

2001 Porsche Boxster Insurance

Insurance for a 2001 Porsche Boxster is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Cabriolet with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2001 Porsche Boxster Compare to Other Cabriolet?

The 2001 Porsche Boxster competed with vehicles like the BMW Z3/Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK, and Audi TT. In terms of performance, the Boxster offered a sharper, more engaging driving experience than the SLK. The Z3/Z4 provided similar performance, but the Boxster had a more refined mid-engine balance. The Audi TT offered all-wheel drive but lacked the pure sports car feel of the Boxster.

Features were comparable across the class, with similar levels of luxury and available options. However, the Boxster arguably had a more driver-focused interior.

Reliability is where the Boxster faced challenges, primarily due to the IMS bearing issue. The BMW Z3/Z4 generally had better overall reliability ratings. The Mercedes SLK also had its own set of potential issues, but the IMS bearing was a unique concern for the Boxster.

In terms of price, the Boxster was generally more expensive than the Z3 but competitive with the SLK and TT.

Alternatives to consider include later model Boxsters (2005+) which addressed the IMS bearing issue, or a BMW Z4 for potentially better reliability. If performance is paramount, a Honda S2000 offers a similar open-top experience with legendary reliability, albeit with a different driving character. The Nissan 350Z roadster is another good consideration for performance at a lower price point.

Final Verdict: Is the 2001 Porsche Boxster a Good Cabriolet?

The 2001 Porsche Boxster is ideal for driving enthusiasts seeking an affordable entry into the Porsche brand and a classic roadster experience. It's worth buying *if* you are aware of the potential IMS bearing issue and are prepared to address it (either through replacement or careful monitoring). Buying a used example is the only option since it's no longer in production. A well-maintained Boxster S offers the best performance, but even the base model provides a satisfying driving experience. Prioritize cars with documented maintenance history and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Porsche mechanic.

Wanted a Porsche for a long time...

I've dreamed of owning a 911 Turbo since I was in my teens. I'm now 63 years old and don't need to drive 150mph anymore. Last year my wife and I decided to look for a convertible to recapture the days of when we first started dating in 1987 when she had a 1982 Fiat Spyder 2000 convertible. We traded that in 2004 on a BMW 330Xi. We had a pretty sweet deal lined up on a 2008 BMW Z4 until the day before we went to pick it up and found out the dealer sold it from under us. What could have really sucked turned into a golden opportunity: we chanced upon a 2001 Boxster S with 59,000 original miles. We have not regretted the decision one bit. Yes, the ergonomics are somewhat dated compared to today and it's not the latest and greatest technology, but we bought it to drive, not to be distracted with all sorts of gizmos. (I'm employed as a Sales representative at a local Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep Dealer for over 35 years. I'm exposed to all the technology). This little Bavarian bomber is an absolute blast to drive; comfortable, quick, sticks to the road like burnt eggs to a cast iron frying pan, and turns heads everywhere. It's capable of 160+ mph, but the right road at 55 mph brings grins all the time. We just went for a weekend trip with it and had no problem with room for our luggage, a tote bag, and a small soft-sided cooler. And as an added bonus, we took it through the famed Hawk's Nest Highway on Route 97 north of Port Jervis, NY. Wonderful to drive, comfortable even after a couple hours, fuel-efficient (except when I play with the Tiptronic on a twisty road), and so far, dead-bolt reliable. So I didn't get my 911 Turbo; the Boxster S is a more than welcome consolation prize. You owe it to yourself. P.S- My wife drives it more than I do!

Great example of German engineering

Fast and fun sports car, superb handling, performance, and styling. Mid-engine balance allows incredible G-forces, engine seems to develop peak-torque in the higher range of RPMs.

Amazing car! Incredible handling and fun to drive

Such a great car to drive and have fun with. Incredible handling (better than my 911) due to mid-engine design "S model" with 275 HP. Never any problems with this car. Get in, start, drive easy until operating temp is reached, then let her rip! Hard top is nice for colder weather, Speedster Humps make it different and unique compared to other Boxsters. High-performance intake and exhaust make this car sound amazing! This car looks, drives and feels like new.

Pure joy to drive

Very responsive to steering and the accelerator. Even at high speed, stepping on the pedal will pull your head back. It corners easily at much higher than recommend speeds. It also turns heads at every stoplight.
