The 2002 Porsche Boxster, a mid-engine roadster, arrived during the Boxster's initial 986 generation (1996-2004). Its popularity stemmed from offering Porsche performance at a relatively accessible price point. Available trims were the base Boxster and the Boxster S. Expect a used pricing range from around $8,000 to $20,000 depending on condition and mileage. Its balanced handling and open-top driving experience make it a desirable sports car.
The Good

The 2002 Boxster offers engaging performance and balanced handling, appealing to enthusiasts. Its iconic Porsche design and open-top thrills provide emotional satisfaction. From a practical standpoint, it's relatively reliable (with proper maintenance), offers decent fuel economy for a sports car, and provides a good value for its performance level.

The Bad

Common weaknesses include the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing failure, which can cause catastrophic engine damage. Rear main seal (RMS) leaks are also frequent. Other potential issues involve the convertible top mechanism, and brittle plastic components in the interior and cooling system. Pre-purchase inspection is crucial.

What Problems Does the 2002 Porsche Boxster Have?

The 2002 Porsche Boxster, like other 986-generation models, faces some well-documented reliability concerns. The most infamous is the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing. Failure of this bearing can lead to catastrophic engine damage, requiring a complete engine rebuild or replacement. While not all Boxsters experience this issue, it's a significant risk factor. The rear main seal (RMS) is also prone to leaking, resulting in oil drips and requiring replacement. Another common issue is related to the convertible top mechanism, which can experience failures in the motor or hydraulic system.
Cooling system components, such as the coolant expansion tank and water pump, are also known to fail over time due to the age of the plastic materials. There were recalls related to lighting and electrical components during that period. Long-term reliability hinges on preventative maintenance and addressing these known issues promptly. Early detection and repair of IMS bearing issues is crucial. Regularly inspecting and maintaining the cooling system and convertible top can also help prevent costly repairs down the road.

How long will the 2002 Porsche Boxster last?

Given proper maintenance, a 2002 Porsche Boxster can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide years of enjoyable service. Many examples are still running strong after 20+ years. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, coolant flushes, and addressing known issues like IMS bearing concerns. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan. The car's long-term durability is generally good aside from the engine concerns, but rubber and plastic components will degrade over time, requiring replacement.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Porsche Boxster's technology is relatively basic by modern standards. Built-in tech primarily consisted of a standard AM/FM radio with a CD player. Optional features included a Bose sound system upgrade for enhanced audio. Driver-assistance features were limited, with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) being a standard safety feature. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) or Porsche Stability Management (PSM) was available as an option.
Safety features included dual front airbags and side airbags. It did not offer advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking, which are common in newer vehicles.
Crash-test ratings from organizations like NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) or IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are not readily available for this specific model year. However, the 986 Boxster generation was generally considered to be a safe vehicle for its time, with a strong structure and effective safety features for occupant protection in the event of a collision. Keep in mind that advancements in automotive safety have significantly improved since 2002.

2002 Porsche Boxster Prices and Market Value

The 2002 Porsche Boxster had a starting MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of around $42,000 when new. The Boxster S started at a higher price. Currently, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $20,000 depending on condition, mileage, and options. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include: maintenance history, IMS bearing replacement (or proof of its health), overall condition (interior, exterior, and mechanical), and whether it's a base model or a Boxster S.

2002 Porsche Boxster Cost of Ownership

The 2002 Porsche Boxster is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums can be higher than average for a sports car. Fuel costs are moderate, depending on driving habits. Maintenance and repair costs are where it gets expensive. Porsche parts and specialized labor can be pricey. Addressing potential issues like the IMS bearing can significantly impact long-term costs. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential for Boxster ownership. It is not an economical choice.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2002 Porsche Boxster Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2002 Porsche Boxster competed with sports cars like the BMW Z3/Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK, and Audi TT. In terms of performance, the Boxster offered superior handling and a more engaging driving experience compared to the SLK and TT, but the Z4 could be considered similarly sporty. Feature-wise, the Boxster was fairly basic, lacking some of the luxury features available in the Mercedes-Benz SLK. Reliability is where the Boxster falls behind, with the IMS bearing issue being a major concern compared to the generally more reliable BMW Z4. The Audi TT offered all-wheel drive, a benefit in inclement weather that the Boxster lacked.
Price-wise, the Boxster was initially competitive, but used prices now reflect the potential maintenance costs. Alternatives to consider include a later-model BMW Z4 (E85/E86), which offers similar performance with potentially better reliability (though still not perfect), or a Honda S2000 for exceptional reliability and a high-revving engine, albeit with less refinement. If you are prioritizing reliability and lower running costs, the Honda S2000 would be a better alternative.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Porsche Boxster a Good Convertible?

The 2002 Porsche Boxster is ideal for driving enthusiasts who appreciate balanced handling, open-top thrills, and the Porsche badge, and are prepared for potential maintenance costs. It's worth buying *if* you find a well-maintained example with documented service history, preferably one where the IMS bearing has been addressed or inspected. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Porsche mechanic is essential. The Boxster S offers more performance, but the base model can also be enjoyable. Avoid neglected examples at all costs. It's a rewarding car to own, but it requires a proactive approach to maintenance.

The Boxter S is an adrenaline rush

My car had the IMS bearing replaced. With that said it has been a very reliable car. I use it as an everyday driver and also on the autocross track for fun. It now has 75k miles and is still a very trusted driver. I love this car!

Best car I’ve ever owned... and I’ve owned a few.

Reliability, ease of maintenance, fuel economy, ergonomics, I don’t see what’s not to love about the first generation Boxster. I even decided to keep my 986 boxster over a performance tuned 996 turbo... that’s how much I like this platform. It’s a wonderful design and doesn’t seem to get the attention it deserves. I’ve daily driven my boxster extensively over the past year, road tripping from Colorado to Florida to California and even down to Arizona. Miles of smiles.

Very reliable and quick.Named her Betsy!

Betsy loves mountain roads . The feel of her is best when really driven , thrown into curves then so quick to the next. Driving this car is absolutely a pleasure. So very acutely responsive , handles hands down better than any other car I've driven.

Original owner, second Boxster. Best car ever!

Love it! Great convertible, easy to upgrade and maintain. Bought new, 5th Porsche, 2nd Boxster much more power as an S and easy to handle. Gave to my wife when I ordered 2007 Cayman S/R, which is even faster but not a Convertible.

My First Car

The ultimate budget sports car. Made to handle the curves like a dream. One of the sharpest looking cars on the road. As a Porsche it gets attention most everywhere it goes. The only down side is the expense of repairs. Amazing car for the money.

Unforgettable Memories

Bought the car used and immediately took off on trips, the first being the Blue Ridge Parkway. The way the car handles around corners, that it will fly when you need it, but will take its time just as well. Never owned a car as long and still love it. Best car for adventures and travel I've ever owned.

Fun to drive, easy to maintain, stylish, practical

Porsche is definitely the best made European car. A used Boxster is so affordable and fun and practical. It is so reliable and easy to maintain.
