The 2014 Porsche Boxster is a mid-engine, two-seat roadster, part of the third generation (981) launched in 2012. Key trims include the base Boxster and the Boxster S. Known for its exceptional handling, balanced chassis, and engaging driving experience, it boasts a classic Porsche design and a powerful flat-six engine. The original MSRP range was roughly $50,000 to $65,000. Its open-top design and sports car pedigree make it highly desirable.
The Good

The 2014 Boxster offers exhilarating performance and surprisingly good fuel efficiency for a sports car. Its iconic Porsche design provides undeniable curb appeal. Reliability is generally good, and the cockpit offers a comfortable, well-appointed space for spirited drives. For practical buyers, it's a relatively accessible Porsche; for emotional buyers, it delivers a pure sports car experience.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury cars. Some owners have reported issues with the PDK transmission, and the infotainment system can feel dated. The base engine, while good, might leave some wanting more power. Pre-purchase inspections are crucial to check for any existing mechanical problems.

What Problems Does the 2014 Porsche Boxster Have?

The 2014 Porsche Boxster, while generally reliable, does have some frequently reported problems and long-term reliability concerns to be aware of. One area to monitor is the PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung) transmission, which, while providing rapid shifts, can sometimes exhibit jerky behavior or require software updates to address shifting smoothness. Some owners have reported mechatronic unit failures in the PDK, which can be costly to repair. Engine issues are relatively rare, but checking for oil leaks is essential, particularly around the rear main seal. Early models of the 981 generation (including 2013 models) experienced a few more reported issues than later ones, so a 2014 model might be slightly more refined.

The infotainment system, while functional, can feel dated compared to newer systems and might lack some modern connectivity features like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Suspension components, particularly bushings and control arms, may wear out over time, especially if the car is driven hard or on rough roads. Regular inspections of the suspension are recommended. There haven't been any widespread recalls specifically targeting the 2014 Boxster, but it's always a good idea to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any updates or recalls that might have been issued. Overall, regular maintenance and careful pre-purchase inspection are key to ensuring long-term reliability.

How long will the 2014 Porsche Boxster last?

A well-maintained 2014 Porsche Boxster can easily provide 150,000 miles or more of service. With diligent maintenance, following the recommended service intervals, and addressing any issues promptly, many owners report exceeding 200,000 miles. Key factors influencing longevity include regular oil changes, proper cooling system maintenance, and attention to the PDK transmission (if equipped). Potential long-term weaknesses include gradual wear of suspension components, potential for increased oil consumption as the engine ages, and the eventual need to address the infotainment system's obsolescence. Proper storage and climate control can also prevent issues with the convertible top.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Porsche Boxster comes standard with a touchscreen infotainment system, although its interface and processing speed can feel dated compared to modern systems. Standard entertainment features include a CD player, USB port, and auxiliary input. Available upgrades include a premium Bose or Burmester sound system for enhanced audio quality. The built-in navigation system was an optional extra. In terms of driver-assistance features, the 2014 Boxster offered optional features like adaptive cruise control and parking sensors. However, it lacks many of the advanced driver-assistance systems found in newer cars, such as lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking.

Regarding safety features, the 2014 Boxster includes standard features like anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional safety features include Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV). Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA were not specifically conducted for the 2014 Boxster. However, Porsche vehicles are generally engineered to high safety standards, and the Boxster includes a robust safety cage and well-designed crumple zones. The focus on handling and braking performance also contributes to its overall safety profile.

2014 Porsche Boxster Prices and Market Value

The 2014 Porsche Boxster had an original MSRP ranging from around $50,000 for the base model to $65,000+ for the Boxster S, depending on options. Current used market prices typically range from $30,000 to $45,000, depending on condition, mileage, and options. Depreciation has been moderate, reflecting Porsche's strong brand reputation and the Boxster's desirability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, optional equipment (especially performance-enhancing features), and overall market demand. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command premium prices.

2014 Porsche Boxster Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2014 Porsche Boxster is generally more costly than owning a non-luxury vehicle. Insurance premiums are higher due to the car's performance and value. Fuel costs are moderate but can increase with aggressive driving. Maintenance, including oil changes and tire replacements, is more expensive than average. Repairs, especially those involving the PDK transmission or engine, can be substantial. Long-term ownership costs should be carefully considered, as routine maintenance and unexpected repairs can add up quickly.

How Does the 2014 Porsche Boxster Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2014 Porsche Boxster competes with other roadsters like the BMW Z4, Audi TT, and Mercedes-Benz SLK (now SLC). In terms of performance, the Boxster offers a more engaging and balanced driving experience than the SLK, with sharper handling. The BMW Z4 offers similar performance, but the Boxster's mid-engine layout gives it a slight edge. The Audi TT provides a more refined and comfortable ride but lacks the raw sports car feel of the Boxster.

In terms of features, the Boxster's infotainment system is less advanced than those found in newer rivals. Reliability is generally good, but maintenance costs are higher compared to the German competitors. Price-wise, the Boxster sits in the middle of the pack, potentially more expensive than a similarly equipped Z4 but less so than a brand new SLK/SLC.

Alternatives worth considering include a used Porsche Cayman (for a coupe version of the Boxster) or a newer Mazda MX-5 Miata for a more affordable and arguably more reliable roadster experience. A used BMW M2 could also be considered for similar performance and driving pleasure in a coupe format. Ultimately, the Boxster stands out for its pure Porsche driving dynamics and iconic styling, making it a compelling choice for enthusiasts.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Porsche Boxster a Good Convertible?

The 2014 Porsche Boxster is ideal for driving enthusiasts seeking a balanced, engaging, and stylish roadster. It's worth buying, especially as a used vehicle, if you prioritize driving experience and are willing to accept higher maintenance costs. A pre-purchase inspection is a must. The Boxster S trim is recommended for its additional power, though the base model still provides a rewarding experience. A well-maintained example with a clean service history is crucial. If modern tech features are a top priority, consider looking at newer models, or alternatives that offer more updated infotainment systems. Overall, it's a fantastic sports car, but prudent ownership is key.

Get a Boxster!

We bought our 2014 Porsche Boxster Base in early 2016 with only 1,200 miles on the odometer from a Porsche dealer in NC. We’ve owned Corvettes, BMW 528i’s, Mercedes 300D’s, Subaru’s, Prius, Explorer, Suburban, etc and our Boxster is by far the best car overall! During the extended factory warranty we had it serviced at a dealer and their warranty was excellent. Now we use other experts for service and the have access to the factory maintenance and can reset the yellow service requests after completion. The 2.7 liter flat 6 is excellent and nothing beats the sound it makes above 4,000 rpm. Also ours gets 40+ mpg at highway speeds and corners like it’s on rails! Go ahead. Buy one!

Two Seats No Waiting

The Porsche Boxster looks good and drives good too. Everything you need to make it fun to take the long way home, this car has it. If you love to drive, this might be your car. A convertible roof a 465 watt Bose stereo, and a naturally aspirated flat six engine never go out of style. A pre purchase inspection and a good indie maintenance shop can help you avoid problems down the line. I have owned faster and more expensive Porsche models but none of them have a bigger fun factor on a sunny day. Or even a cloudy day. Buy a Boxster or a Boxster S and you are innoculated against stoplight envy forever. Or at least as long as you own the car. A Porsche CPO warranty last two years with unlimited miles and zero deductible. Get that and a thorough pre purchase inspection and you have a very good chance at a happy ownership experience. There may not be any perfect cars but this one comes close. A brilliant sports car.

Would never buy another one.

If you’re all about performance, this is the car for you if you want comfort, reliability, ease of service, affordability, then avoid it... not the car for you. This car will break the bank.

This car had great styling was reliable, well engineered and well built. Never had any issues in the 6 years that I owed it and I only sold it because I was living the US to return to the UK and could not take it with me as it’s left hand drive.

Now I realize why Porsche is #1!

The original build price of this car when purchased new absolutely explains the options and engineering that was desired. Five years later after depreciation, the only change was price. The creature comforts, instrumentation and performance is all there!

fantastic driving Experience

There is nothing like a mid engine growling right behind your ears at 7,000 RPM. just that noise alone was almost enough to close the deal for this car. The driving experience, fit and finish and engineering closed the deal. if you want a reliable sports car that has great usability, buy the Boxster. It handles better than a 911 at 1/3 the price.

Best First Porsche Experience

I really love the 2014 Porsche Boxter 981. The handling and ride are amazing. The growl from the flat 6 can?t be beat now that they?ve recently transitioned to a 4 cylinder turbo engine. It?s the best value for the Porsche experience. 4 years old and had 20k mi and feels like it?s practically new. My only gripe is the base model should have electronic seat controls and a better stereo but can?t really complain when you can buy at 45% off from new. I?d recommend to anyone wanting a sporty convertible.
