The Good
The 2004 Boxster offers engaging performance thanks to its mid-engine layout and Porsche's engineering. Its iconic design evokes Porsche's heritage, appealing emotionally. Practically, it offers decent fuel efficiency for a sports car and, when properly maintained, can be relatively reliable. It's a good value for experiencing Porsche performance at a lower price point.
The Bad
Common weaknesses of the 2004 Boxster include potential IMS bearing failure, rear main seal leaks, and issues with the convertible top mechanism. It's crucial to inspect for these problems before purchasing. The plastic rear window can also become cloudy and brittle over time. Suspension components can also wear with age.

What Problems Does the 2004 Porsche Boxster Have?
Rear Main Seal (RMS) leaks are another common issue. The RMS seals the crankshaft to the engine block, and leaks can lead to oil loss. Replacing the RMS is a relatively straightforward repair, but it requires removing the transmission. Convertible top issues, such as hydraulic leaks or motor failures, can also occur. These can be costly to repair.
Other concerns include issues with the mass airflow sensor (MAF), oxygen sensors, and general wear and tear on suspension components. Coolant leaks and cracked expansion tanks are also potential problems. While there haven't been widespread recalls specifically for the 2004 model year, it's always advisable to check the NHTSA website for any applicable recalls based on the VIN. Regular maintenance and inspections are crucial to mitigating these risks.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), dual front airbags, and side airbags. Porsche Stability Management (PSM), an early form of electronic stability control, was available as an option. PSM helps prevent skidding and loss of control, particularly in slippery conditions. Crash test ratings for the 2004 Boxster are somewhat limited; NHTSA conducted frontal crash tests and gave it 4 out of 5 stars for driver and passenger protection. IIHS did not evaluate this model year.
Compared to modern cars, the 2004 Boxster lacks the advanced safety and infotainment technologies that are now commonplace. However, it provided a solid foundation of safety features for its time. Its focus was primarily on the driving experience rather than technological gadgetry. Features like the optional automatically dimming mirrors and rain-sensing wipers were available to enhance the driving experience.

How Does the 2004 Porsche Boxster Compare to Other Convertible?
Features-wise, the Boxster was generally well-equipped for its time, although the BMW Z4 offered more advanced technology options. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Boxster's IMS bearing issue is a significant concern, while the Z4 and SLK had their own potential problems. The S2000 is generally considered more reliable.
Price-wise, the Boxster was typically more expensive than the Z4 and S2000 but comparable to the SLK. If reliability is a top priority, the Honda S2000 is a strong alternative. For a more modern driving experience and potentially fewer maintenance headaches, a newer, used BMW Z4 (later generation) might be a better option, but at a higher price point. However, the Boxster's unique Porsche heritage and driving dynamics make it a compelling choice for enthusiasts.

Hidden Boxster SecretSo my wife wants a Porsche, 2004 Boxster S, I purchased it in 2006, we put it up for sale in 2020 and come to find out their is a bearing,IMS, that needs to be replaced. Cost to replace is $5000. Porsche never issued a recall and never mentioned it to us when getting service at the Porsche dealership starting back in 2014! Thanks porsche! Why didn’t you issue a recall? Al the hardcore Porsche owners know about this. The dealer cost for replacement is about $5k
