The 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a lightweight, two-door roadster that revived the classic British sports car formula. Produced from 1989 onward, the first generation (NA) ran through 1997. Key trims included the base model and the more equipped "LE" (Limited Edition). Original pricing was around $14,000. Its popularity stems from its affordability, fun driving dynamics, and simple, reliable design. It offers a pure, unfiltered driving experience.
The Good

The 1994 MX-5 Miata delivers exhilarating performance thanks to its light weight and responsive engine. Its simplicity contributes to impressive reliability. While not luxurious, it's comfortable enough for spirited drives. Its classic roadster design is timeless. Fuel efficiency is good. It's an affordable sports car that offers exceptional value, appealing to both the heart and the wallet.

The Bad

The 1994 Miata's weaknesses include limited cargo space and a somewhat cramped interior, especially for taller drivers. Rust, particularly in the rocker panels and around the rear wheel arches, is a major concern. Also, check for oil leaks and proper operation of the pop-up headlights. The soft top can be prone to wear and leaks.

1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata: Quick Overview

Here's a summary of key specs for the 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata:

  • Engine Options: 1.8-liter DOHC 16-valve inline-4
  • Horsepower: Approximately 128 hp @ 6500 rpm
  • Fuel Economy:
    • City: 22-25 mpg (estimated)
    • Highway: 27-30 mpg (estimated)
  • 0-60 Times: Around 8.5-9.0 seconds (depending on transmission and condition)
  • Towing Capacity: Not recommended or rated for towing.
  • Trim-Level Features:
    • Base: Included standard features such as manual steering, manual windows, cloth seats, and a basic AM/FM radio.
    • "LE" (Limited Edition): Typically featured unique paint colors (like Montego Blue in 1994), leather seats, a Nardi wood shift knob and parking brake handle, special badging, upgraded sound system (often with a CD player), air conditioning, cruise control, and power windows and mirrors. These were limited production runs and are often more desirable to collectors.
    • Optional Features: Available across certain trims and sometimes dealer-installed, could include air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors, cruise control, a hardtop, and upgraded audio systems.
The 1.8L engine provided a noticeable power bump over the earlier 1.6L, enhancing the Miata's already playful character. The lack of towing capacity reflects the Miata's focus on spirited driving and lightweight performance, rather than utility.

What Problems Does the 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata include rust, particularly in the rocker panels, rear wheel arches, and around the drain holes for the soft top. Oil leaks, especially from the valve cover and rear main seal, are also common as the cars age. The pop-up headlights can sometimes fail due to motor or linkage issues.
Soft top condition is a major concern, as the vinyl can crack and tear with age and sun exposure. Replacement is often necessary.
Regarding recalls, it's crucial to check the VIN with Mazda or the NHTSA to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Recalls can vary depending on the region and specific production date.
Long-term reliability is generally good, but regular maintenance is key. The 1.8L engine is robust, but neglecting oil changes can lead to issues. Cooling system problems, such as radiator leaks and hose failures, can occur with age. The clutch master and slave cylinders are known to fail over time, requiring replacement.
Specifically for the 1994 model year, there aren't any significantly unique problems compared to other NA Miatas. However, given its age, general wear and tear are to be expected, making a thorough pre-purchase inspection essential. Check for modifications, accident damage, and the overall condition of the car before buying.

How long will the 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata last?

A well-maintained 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata can easily exceed 200,000 miles or 25+ years of service. Many examples are still running strong today. However, longevity heavily depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting regular oil changes, coolant flushes, and timing belt replacements will significantly shorten its lifespan.
Long-term durability is generally good, with the engine and transmission being robust. However, rust is the biggest enemy. Constant exposure to moisture and road salt will accelerate corrosion. Soft top wear and tear is also inevitable over time, requiring replacement. Suspension components may also need refreshing after many years of service.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a product of its time, so its built-in tech and safety features are relatively basic compared to modern cars.
Tech & Entertainment: Standard models came with a basic AM/FM radio. Higher trims or optional packages might include a cassette player or even a CD player. There was no navigation system or advanced infotainment.
Driver-Assistance: Driver-assistance features were non-existent. The Miata relied on the driver's skill and awareness.
Safety Features: The 1994 Miata came standard with seatbelts and driver-side airbag. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) was available as an option. Power steering was also an option.
Optional Features: Optional features varied but could include air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors, cruise control, and a hardtop, and upgraded audio systems. These features significantly improved the driving experience. Some models were equipped with a limited-slip differential (LSD) for enhanced traction.
Crash-Test Ratings: Crash test data for the 1994 Miata is limited. However, it's important to remember that safety standards were much lower in the 1990s. The Miata's small size and lack of modern safety features mean it offers less protection in a crash compared to newer vehicles. Always prioritize safety when driving a classic car.

1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata Prices and Market Value

The 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata had a starting price of around $14,000 when new. Current used market prices vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 to $15,000 or more for a well-maintained example. Limited Edition (LE) models command a premium.
Miatas have depreciated significantly over time, but their value has stabilized and is even increasing for clean, original examples. Factors affecting resale value include rust-free condition, low mileage, originality, complete service history, and desirable options like a hardtop or limited-slip differential.

1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata are typically low due to its age and modest performance. Fuel economy is decent, making it relatively inexpensive to run. Maintenance is generally straightforward and affordable, but rust repairs can be costly. Parts availability is excellent. Overall, the Miata is an economical classic car to own, especially if you can perform basic maintenance yourself. However, neglecting rust prevention can lead to significant expenses.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata Compare to Other Sedan?

In 1994, the Mazda MX-5 Miata had few direct rivals in its niche of affordable, lightweight roadsters. Competitors included convertibles like the Honda del Sol, but it was front-wheel drive and offered a different driving experience. Used BMW Z3s might be considered, but they were generally more expensive to buy and maintain.
Performance: The Miata's balanced handling and responsive engine set it apart. While not the fastest car, it was incredibly fun to drive.
Features: The Miata was relatively spartan compared to more luxurious convertibles. Its focus was on driving enjoyment rather than gadgets.
Reliability: The Miata is known for its reliability, especially compared to European sports cars of the era.
Price: The Miata was significantly more affordable than most other convertibles, making it accessible to a wider audience.
Alternatives: If you want a similar experience, consider other NA Miatas (1989-1997), particularly later models with the 1.8L engine. A used BMW Z3 could be an option if you're willing to spend more on maintenance. Ultimately, the Miata's unique combination of affordability, reliability, and driving enjoyment made it a standout choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata a Good Sedan?

The 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata is ideal for driving enthusiasts who appreciate a simple, fun, and affordable sports car. It's a great choice for weekend cruises, autocross events, or daily commuting (if you don't need much cargo space).
It's worth buying *if* you find a well-maintained example with minimal rust and a documented service history. Look for models with desirable options like a hardtop or limited-slip differential. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is essential. While a new Miata offers modern safety and technology, a classic NA Miata provides a unique and engaging driving experience that's hard to replicate.

I was recently given a 1994 MX5 for free due to the fact

I was recently given a 1994 MX5 for free due to the fact it did not have a title. My first thoughts were to just detail the car and sell it, But after driving it home, I was honestly impressed. I’ve now owned it for one week and in the works of getting the title and have no desire to sell the car. That little 1.8 5 speed manual won me over and this is coming from someone who has built many 70s muscle cars. The car is stock, and I plan on keeping it that way, except for some minor engine mods, changing the ragtop into a hardtop convertible and possibly a different rim & tire package.

I would die for this car.

The Mazda Miata is the best car to be created. I am not exaggerating, but I would honestly die for this car. I bought mine June 17th, 2018. That day is deemed the best day of my life thus far. I bought it off some chump for $1,000. It had 2 beat up fenders and needed new tires, wheels, alignment. It had been sitting for so long, it really needed me in its life to love and nurture it.

It's a Miata!

Everyone should own one. They are so cheap (mine was $3k rust free) and easy to maintain. Even in stock form, just an amazingly fun car to drive on the edge or on a cruise. The best car I've ever owned. A perfect second car to make you happy. Also huge communities with all the support and comrade you could ask for. Do I recommend this car? Yes! All the time, to everyone I know and everyone that asks me about it.

A True Driver's Car

I had owned a '91 Miata in the mid '90s and while it's handling made it a blast to drive, it was a bit underpowered. In '94, they solved this problem with the 1.8 liter engine. I think this is the sweet spot of the Miata experience because shortly thereafter, they replaced the true sport car rack and pinion steering with power steering, began sizing up the outside and oddly, sizing down the inside. I have owned a '66 Triumph TR4 and last model of the MGB and these cars were a blast to drive but stunningly unreliable. The Miata is just like an MGB except it works. The top is the easiest to put up and take down of any ragtop I've owned, including the power top on my BMW 325i. Just driving it to the corner market will put a grin on your face. I've owned 45 cars, including a number of high end imports, many sporty, some pure muscle and this little, unassuming car is hands down the most fun to drive. I lucked into a '94, garage kept, literally by a little old lady, with 50k miles. I hope to continue to enjoy it as long as she did, until they took her kicking and screaming to the nursing home.

Great Car

I owned a Miata for nearly 10 years and absolutely loved it. Aging joints (on ME!) caused us to part ways, but if I could have been agile enough to keep it, I would own it until the end. A bit noisy, but that was easily remedied with some strategically place sound proofing materials. A great memory of a Fiat Spider I owned way back when, only far more dependable and water tight!

performance and value

The MX-5 is a thrill a minute to drive. Handeling is top notch, the Miata makes it's power at the 4000 rpm range and above. Could use a 6th gear as your running 3700 rpm at 75 mph. Smooth shifting easy throws. Top is simple to raise and lower, some wind noise as you would expect. Driving this you are looking up at everybody including Harleys as you pass by. Car is very dependable, fun inexpensive to own and operate. This is our 2nd Miata, enjoy.

Sold MGTD to buy Miata

I heard Miatas were called MGA's with reliability. It's true. They're fun to drive, with quick response, good acceleration, and good looks. They're enjoyable for a trip of moderate length (Mine even has speakers in the headrests to overcome wind noise. I would certainly buy another.

A sportscar to LOVE!

I moved to AZ a year before my husband for a job that required relocation and I brought our black '94 Miata to drive during that period and what a WONDERFUL TIME I had driving Arizona's highways and byways. Corners beautifully, 32 miles to the gallon, and with the hardtop is very elegant looking and with the fabric top down is perfect for our sunny AZ weather.

In the family

Leased 1994 "R version" Miata for son at college graduation. He put 35K miles on it in 3 years. Bought it from dealer off lease for $10K in 1997. It has 96K miles on it today. Still gets over 30 MPG on the road and peppey as ever. Stock except Jackson Racing cold air induction, header and exhaust system. No engine repairs yet. Origional red paint and top. Still fun to enjoy the California sun at age 66!
