The BMW X1, a subcompact luxury SUV, has been a popular choice for those seeking a blend of practicality and premium features. The 2022 model year continues this tradition. It features a distinctive BMW design, a well-crafted interior, and agile handling. Key trims typically include the sDrive28i (front-wheel drive) and xDrive28i (all-wheel drive). The pricing range generally starts around $37,000 and can go up depending on options. It stands out due to its relatively spacious interior for its class and the engaging driving experience typical of BMW.
The Good

The 2022 BMW X1 offers a compelling mix of advantages. For the emotional buyer, it boasts sporty performance and stylish design. Practical buyers appreciate its comfortable and relatively spacious interior, decent fuel efficiency, and the solid reputation of the BMW brand. Reliability is generally considered good, adding to its overall value.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2022 BMW X1 include a somewhat firm ride on certain road surfaces. Some may find the rear seats a bit cramped for adults on longer journeys. While generally reliable, be mindful of potential issues common to turbocharged engines and luxury vehicles, such as higher maintenance costs. Infotainment can take some time to master.

What Problems Does the 2022 BMW X1 Have?

The 2022 BMW X1 generally enjoys good reliability ratings. However, like any vehicle, it's not immune to potential issues. Some owners have reported minor electrical glitches, particularly with the infotainment system. Other reported problems revolve around the turbocharger, which is common on many modern vehicles. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes, is crucial to mitigate turbo-related issues. Some owners have mentioned experiencing premature wear of brake components. Recalls for the 2022 X1 have been relatively infrequent, but it's always important to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information. Long-term reliability concerns typically center around the longevity of the turbocharger, potential oil leaks as the engine ages, and the upkeep costs associated with luxury vehicle components. Proper maintenance and addressing issues promptly are key to ensuring long-term reliability. Some pre-2022 model years had reports of issues with the timing chain, but this appears to be less prevalent in the 2022 model.

How long will the 2022 BMW X1 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2022 BMW X1 can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years. Average annual mileage is around 12,000-15,000 miles. Long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance, including oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing any mechanical issues promptly. Potential long-term weaknesses include potential turbocharger issues, wear and tear on suspension components, and possible electrical glitches. Regular servicing by a qualified mechanic familiar with BMW vehicles is highly recommended to maximize the lifespan of the vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 BMW X1 comes standard with an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay compatibility. Built-in tech includes Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and a rearview camera. Standard driver-assistance features include forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking.
Optional features include a larger touchscreen display with navigation, a head-up display, parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control.
For entertainment, the X1 offers an optional Harman Kardon premium sound system.
Safety features extend to multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes.
The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) typically awards the BMW X1 with good crash test ratings, often earning a Top Safety Pick designation. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also provides crash test ratings, and the X1 typically performs well. Blind-spot monitoring is available as an optional feature, enhancing safety further. Overall, the 2022 X1 offers a comprehensive suite of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features, with many options to customize the vehicle to individual preferences.

2022 BMW X1 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2022 BMW X1 started around $37,000. Current used market prices range from approximately $28,000 to $35,000, depending on mileage, condition, and options. Depreciation is relatively moderate for a luxury SUV. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and the presence of desirable options like the Premium or M Sport packages. Well-maintained examples with low mileage and a clean title command higher resale prices. Color also plays a role, with more popular colors typically holding their value better.

2022 BMW X1 Cost of Ownership

The 2022 BMW X1 is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums are typically higher than non-luxury vehicles. Fuel costs are reasonable, but premium fuel is recommended. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, especially as the vehicle ages, due to the higher cost of BMW parts and specialized labor. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential for long-term ownership. While not the most economical choice, it offers a balance of luxury and practicality.

How Does the 2022 BMW X1 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 BMW X1 competes with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Volvo XC40. In terms of performance, the X1 offers a sporty driving experience, similar to the Q3, but often considered more engaging than the GLA. Features are comparable across the segment, with each offering a range of tech and driver-assistance systems. Reliability is generally good for the X1, on par with the Q3 and XC40, but potentially slightly better than the GLA. Price-wise, the X1 is competitive within its class.
Alternatives to consider include:
  • Audi Q3: Offers a refined interior and similar performance.
  • Mercedes-Benz GLA: Provides a luxurious interior and comfortable ride.
  • Volvo XC40: Stands out with its distinctive Scandinavian design and strong focus on safety.
  • Lexus UX: Known for its excellent reliability and fuel efficiency, though less sporty.
If sporty handling is a priority, the X1 is a strong contender. If comfort and luxury are paramount, the GLA might be a better choice. For ultimate reliability, the Lexus UX could be considered, though it lacks the BMW's driving dynamics.

from honda crv to bmw x1-was it worth it

this is my first bmw, being a toyota and honda guy previously. this is a honda plus, meaning the refinements you wished your honda had, this has. powerful, comfortable and a bit more luxury. not quite the gas mileage of my crv but a super automobile. so if your looking at this you must be contemplating a purchase. do it you won't be sorry.
