Rating: 4.45
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pickup truck, part of the second generation launched in 2015. Available in extended cab and crew cab body styles with various bed lengths, it offers a blend of practicality and maneuverability. Key trims include Base, WT (Work Truck), LT, Z71, and ZR2. New pricing ranged from around $21,000 to $45,000, depending on configuration. Its popularity stems from its manageable size compared to full-size trucks, offering capable performance and off-road prowess in the ZR2 trim.
The Good

The 2019 Colorado offers a range of engines providing both fuel efficiency and strong towing capacity. Its manageable size and available 4WD appeal to practical buyers. The ZR2 trim provides exceptional off-road capability, appealing to those seeking adventure. While reliability is generally good, some issues have been reported. Comfort and design are acceptable, with some trims offering more upscale features.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2019 Colorado include reported transmission issues (specifically the 8-speed automatic), infotainment glitches, and some complaints regarding build quality. Watch out for vibrations, especially at highway speeds. Premature wear of certain components has also been noted by some owners. Ensure thorough inspection and a detailed pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado often revolve around the 8-speed automatic transmission (8L45 and 8L90). Owners have described rough shifting, hesitation, and shuddering. This issue is not unique to the 2019 model year but has been reported across several years using the same transmission. Some have attributed it to transmission fluid issues, while others point to internal component failures. Infotainment system glitches, such as freezing or slow response times, have also been reported. Additionally, some owners have experienced premature wear in certain components. There have been some recalls issued for the Colorado in general, but not necessarily specific to the 2019 model. Owners should check the NHTSA website with their VIN to verify if their vehicle is affected. Long-term reliability concerns primarily focus on the transmission's durability. While some owners have had no issues, the prevalence of transmission complaints suggests it's an area to monitor. Oil consumption issues have been reported by some, though not as widespread as transmission concerns. Pre-purchase inspections should focus on these areas.

How long will the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado last?

With regular maintenance, a 2019 Chevrolet Colorado can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles, potentially lasting for 10-15 years depending on usage and care. Long-term durability is generally good, provided potential issues like the transmission are addressed proactively. Weaknesses can emerge in the form of increased repair needs related to the transmission, infotainment system, and some suspension components as the vehicle ages. Rust can be a concern in regions with heavy road salt usage, especially on earlier models. Adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, including fluid changes and regular inspections, is crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

Lemon 💯‼️🍋. Dealer couldn’t find issue…in 4 times already for electrical, battery, security and entertainment system issues! Just starting the lemon law process. Dealership is aware and lackadaisical about this problem!

Its not what I expected. Transmission shifts when it wants. It started at 3000 miles. I now have less the3800 on it and the shifting us so bad it beats you up. Downshifts after shifting. So not the truck I thought it would be.

On 11/11/19, I brought my brand-new Colorado (had it for 5 days) to Liberty Chevrolet in Wakefield due to the appearance of a check engine light that was caused by an Exhaust Emission Issue. After 3 days of not hearing from the Service Dept. I made several calls to find out the status of my vehicle. Several times I was put on hold for long periods of time (> 3mins) and often I was disconnected while on hold. Finally, I asked to speak to the Service Manager (Amando) about the status of my truck and was told he would get back to me. A few hours later I received an email stating my vehicle was ready to be picked up. 30 mins later, Amando called me to ask if he could keep the truck to have a more experienced mechanic look into the issue because the emission readings were still high and they were looking at another truck at the same time that had a similar issue. I agreed to let them keep the vehicle and continued to call the next few days to check on the status of my truck and the availability of a loaner vehicle. Each time they were still looking at the truck and had no vehicles available for me to use. On 11/18, I reached out to Chevy Customer Service to express my concerns I had with my vehicle and the service that was being provided. On 11/19, I spoke with Amando and stated I would no longer be calling every day and would be waiting for a call from Liberty when my vehicle was repaired, or loaner vehicle became available. Several phone calls back and forth took place with Chevy Customer Service over the next week about the status of my truck and still no calls were received from the Liberty Service Department. On Tuesday 11/26 around 5pm, I had a conversation with the Chevy Customer Service rep and she stated Liberty wanted to give me my vehicle to use over the holiday and would have me bring it back when they had a loner vehicle available for me. I then stated that the next day would be day 15 and under the MA Lemon Law I would be within my right to request a refund and was now planning to return my truck to GM. Approximately 1 hour later I received an email from Liberty Chevrolet stating my vehicle was repaired and available to be picked up. At this time of the night all I was able to do was leave messages at the GM Customer Service line and for Amando at Liberty questioning what was going on. On Wednesday 11/27 Amando called me to say my vehicle was all set. I told him I wouldn’t be able to get there until after 6pm to pick up the vehicle and it could be left outside for me to pick up. I went by Liberty at 7:30 pm and the vehicle was not there. On Friday 11/29 I went to Liberty to see what the status was and spoke with Amando and was handed a service break down that included a statement “customer refused to pickup vehicle” I asked for that to be removed from the diagnostic sheet because it was untrue but he would not. He had a tech retrieve my vehicle for me to take home. Come to find out my keys were locked in the vehicle in the rear lot. When I did finally gain access to the vehicle, I realized that during the 19 days the vehicle was at Liberty it accumulated approximately 135 miles and had a coffee tray, creamers, straws and napkins left for me on the passenger-side floor. At no point during this experience was I offered a substitute vehicle or compensation for going without my brand-new truck OR a means of transportation for 19 days.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado features the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, with an 8-inch touchscreen standard on LT and higher trims. This includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Base models have a more basic audio system. Available tech features include a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to newer vehicles. Available options included forward collision alert and lane departure warning. Standard safety features include a rearview camera, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, and a suite of airbags. Higher trims offer rear parking sensors. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS vary depending on the configuration. NHTSA typically awards four or five stars overall, while IIHS ratings can vary based on the specific test. The optional forward collision alert system uses a camera to detect potential collisions, while lane departure warning alerts the driver if the vehicle drifts out of its lane without signaling. The MyLink system provides access to navigation (optional), Bluetooth connectivity, and smartphone integration. While not the most cutting-edge tech available, it's functional and user-friendly. However, occasional software glitches can occur.

2019 Chevrolet Colorado Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ranged from approximately $21,000 for the base model to around $45,000 for a fully equipped ZR2. Current used market prices vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and trim, typically ranging from $18,000 to $35,000. The Colorado depreciates at a moderate rate, influenced by factors like mileage, condition, accident history, and trim level. The ZR2 trim tends to hold its value better due to its desirable off-road capabilities. Lower mileage and well-maintained examples command higher resale prices. Demand for mid-size trucks also impacts resale value; strong demand generally translates to higher prices.

2019 Chevrolet Colorado Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado are typically average for its class. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice, with the diesel offering the best fuel economy but potentially higher fuel prices. Routine maintenance costs are generally reasonable. However, potential transmission repairs can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Parts availability is good, and repairs are generally straightforward, but unexpected issues can make the Colorado moderately costly to own compared to some competitors. Budgeting for potential transmission issues is advisable when considering a used model.

2019 Chevrolet Colorado Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Chevrolet Colorado is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Truck?

The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado competes with the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger (reintroduced in 2019), and Nissan Frontier. The Tacoma is known for its reliability and strong resale value but can feel dated in terms of technology and comfort. The Ranger offers a more modern interior and strong turbocharged engine, but its reliability is still being established. The Frontier is the most affordable but also the most outdated. In terms of performance, the Colorado's V6 and diesel options offer competitive power and towing. The ZR2 trim provides superior off-road capability compared to most rivals except for the Tacoma TRD Pro. Feature-wise, the Colorado is generally on par, although the Ranger might offer more advanced driver-assistance systems. Reliability is where the Colorado lags slightly behind the Tacoma. If reliability is a top priority, the Tacoma is a better choice, albeit at a potentially higher price. The Ranger is a solid alternative if a more modern interior and turbocharged performance are desired. The Honda Ridgeline offers a more comfortable ride and unique features like a trunk in the bed but sacrifices some towing capacity and off-road capability. Consider the Colorado if you need a versatile truck with a good balance of features, performance, and price, but be mindful of potential transmission issues.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Truck?

The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado is a suitable choice for those seeking a mid-size truck with a good balance of practicality, performance, and available off-road capabilities (especially the ZR2). It's worth buying, particularly if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history. Consider the V6 or diesel engines for better performance and towing. When purchasing used, prioritize a thorough inspection, focusing on the transmission's condition. Be prepared for potential transmission repairs down the line. If reliability is paramount, the Toyota Tacoma may be a better option, but the Colorado offers a compelling alternative with its diverse engine choices and available features. Buying new might avoid some potential issues, but a carefully selected used model can provide good value.

Great truck that has known transmission issues

I really like my 2019 Colorado 4x4 crew cab. It is pretty comfortable and has good room to seat 4 adults, has good performance and gas mileage. I have had Transmission issues since new with the well known Colorado trans shudder. I had the transmission fluid changed at 11000 miles then again at 26000 miles to take care of the shudder and now at 40000 miles the shudder has returned for the 3rd time much worse. I now had to make another appointment to have it diagnosed again so obviously the flush is just a temporary fix to this ongoing problem, so how about fixing the problem the right way by replacing the torque converter or finding the root cause instead of just changing the fluid. I like the truck in all aspects but am totally disappointed with the well known transmission shudder issues with these trucks.

I love my truck and I hope it won’t disappoint me.

2019 Chevy Colorado, 2.5l 4-cyl Worktruck 6-speed automatic. Already put 60,000 miles on it. So far, so good. No engine or transmission issues. Suspension works great, I just resent it should have better soundproofing. It appears that 100 mph is the top speed for it. I like my truck and I hope it never disappoints me. Major issues I find is at the assembly line. My car came with the brake boosters disconnected and the bolts for the step sidebars loose. Autonation took care of it.

Zr2 excellent truck!

Just hit 30k on my Zr2. I have owned 2 Raptors (2010 & 2012), Tacoma, Tundra, Ram 1500, and recently a Ram 2500. I bought each of those except the Raptors brand new. The Chevy Colorado Zr2 is my all time favorite - The ride is good, quick, great handling, inside styling good for sport truck, outside styling is excellent, electronics are adequate, AC/Heat awesome, access to accessories is excellent, Offroad very good, snow excellent.

Learn from my mistake

Several huge issues with this vehicle including recalls. Transmission was SHOT before it left the lot brand new. Suggestion from the dealer was to get an extended warranty on a brand new car. This vehicle is garbage. Just go to consumer reports. Do your homework. Chevy did absolutely nothing to help me and they knew that I was getting a lemon.

Good looks

Good truck for someone who doesn’t need a full size truck. Transmission is jerky and shutters badly unless you get fluid changed to synthetic fluid. Not much top end speed even with 6 cylinder
