The 2012 Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pickup truck, offered in regular, extended, and crew cab configurations. It was part of the Colorado's first generation, produced from 2004 to 2012. Key trims include the base model, LT, and Z71. The original pricing ranged from around $17,000 to $30,000 depending on configuration. Its appeal lies in its maneuverability compared to full-size trucks, making it popular for city driving and light-duty tasks.
The Good

The 2012 Chevrolet Colorado offers a blend of practicality and affordability. Its smaller size provides better maneuverability, appealing to practical buyers. Decent fuel economy (for a truck) and a capable engine offer value. For emotional buyers, it provides truck utility in a more manageable package and has a rugged, traditional truck design.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado include a somewhat dated interior design and the use of lower-quality interior materials. Reliability can be a concern in higher mileage examples; watch out for transmission issues, specifically slipping or rough shifting, and potential problems with the four-wheel-drive system, if equipped. Fuel economy isn't stellar compared to newer mid-size trucks.

What Problems Does the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado, and for similar model years in its generation, often revolve around the transmission, particularly slipping or rough shifting. The four-wheel-drive system can also exhibit issues, especially the actuator motor. Other reported problems include issues with the HVAC system, such as the blower motor resistor failing. Some owners have also reported problems with the fuel system, including fuel pump failures and issues with the fuel level sensor.

Recalls have been issued for various Colorado models throughout its production run, although specific recalls for the 2012 model should be checked on the NHTSA website using the VIN. Long-term reliability concerns often stem from the age of the vehicle. Components like the suspension, brakes, and engine mounts may require replacement sooner than on newer vehicles. Rust can also be a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winters and road salt. It's important to thoroughly inspect the frame and undercarriage for rust before purchasing a used Colorado.

How long will the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Chevrolet Colorado can reasonably last for 200,000 miles or more. Years of service often depend on driving habits and climate conditions, but 10-15 years is achievable. Long-term durability hinges on consistent upkeep, especially regarding fluid changes and addressing minor repairs promptly. Weaknesses over time can include suspension wear, corrosion in rust-prone areas, and potential engine issues due to age and mileage. The interior plastics may also become brittle and prone to cracking.

For a small truck, it has a lot of leg room and power going down the road. It looks and drive's like a New Truck. It handle great when driving down the road.

This is the worst truck I have ever seen it breaks down constantly and the dealer never fixes it right this truck is junk for your best interest if you come across one walk away you will think me later

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Chevrolet Colorado offers a relatively basic tech and safety feature set, reflecting its age. Built-in tech typically includes an AM/FM radio with CD player, and available satellite radio. Higher trims might offer a premium audio system. Entertainment options are limited compared to modern vehicles; Bluetooth connectivity wasn't standard and often required aftermarket solutions.

Driver-assistance features are minimal, mostly consisting of standard features like antilock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC). There are no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring.

Safety features include front airbags, side-impact airbags (optional on some models), and a tire pressure monitoring system. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS should be checked for the specific cab configuration (regular, extended, or crew cab) to determine safety performance. Ratings vary, and some configurations may have lower scores than others. Optional features would have included things like OnStar.

2012 Chevrolet Colorado Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado ranged from approximately $17,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim, engine, and options. Current used market prices typically range from $6,000 to $15,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to its age. Resale value is affected by factors like mileage, overall condition, maintenance history, and the presence of desirable options like four-wheel drive or the V8 engine. Trucks in excellent condition with low mileage and a clean title command higher prices.

2012 Chevrolet Colorado Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado are generally moderate. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice and driving habits; the inline-4 is more economical than the V8. Maintenance costs can be moderate, but potential repairs associated with an older vehicle, like transmission or suspension work, can increase long-term ownership costs. Parts availability is generally good. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle to own compared to newer, more fuel-efficient options.

2012 Chevrolet Colorado Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Chevrolet Colorado is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck Cab Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado Compare to Other Truck Cab Pickup Truck?

The 2012 Chevrolet Colorado competes with the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Ford Ranger (though the Ranger was not sold in the US in 2012). The Tacoma is generally considered more reliable, although pricier on the used market. The Frontier offers similar performance and features but may also have reliability concerns. The Colorado offers a slightly more powerful V8 option than some competitors.

Compared to newer models, the Colorado lags behind in terms of features, fuel economy, and safety technology. Alternatives to the 2012 Colorado include newer model years of the Tacoma or Frontier, which offer improved features and often better reliability. Consider a newer Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon (if budget allows), as the redesigned generation offers significant improvements in all areas. If prioritizing reliability and willing to spend more, the Tacoma remains a solid choice. The Honda Ridgeline (though unibody) provides a more comfortable ride and better fuel economy but sacrifices some towing capacity.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado a Good Truck Cab Pickup Truck?

The 2012 Chevrolet Colorado is ideal for buyers seeking an affordable and compact pickup truck for light-duty tasks. It's worth buying if the price is right and the vehicle has been well-maintained with documented service records. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial. The V8-equipped models offer the best performance and towing capability. Avoid models with known transmission issues or excessive rust. Consider newer, more modern trucks unless budget is a primary concern.
