The Good
The 2004 Silverado 3500 offered strong performance with its powerful engine options, appealing to practical buyers needing to haul and tow. Its reputation for reliability and relative comfort (especially in higher trims) added value. Emotionally, it's a classic American work truck, representing strength and capability.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses include rust, particularly in areas with road salt. Certain model years experienced "Quicksilver" paint issues. Fuel economy, as expected in a heavy-duty truck, is not great. Also, watch for signs of heavy use or neglect, as these trucks were often put to work.

What Problems Does the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Have?
Other reported issues include problems with the fuel pump, particularly as the truck ages. The HVAC system, especially the blend door actuator, can also fail. The Duramax diesel engine, while generally reliable, can experience injector issues and glow plug failures over time, especially if not properly maintained.
Recalls for this model year were issued for issues such as problems with the parking brake cable and potential fuel leakage in certain circumstances. Owners should check the NHTSA website for a complete list of recalls and ensure any outstanding recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability largely depends on maintenance and how the truck was used. A well-maintained 2004 Silverado 3500 can offer years of service, but neglecting maintenance will exacerbate the aforementioned problems.
How long will the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 last?
Long-term durability is generally good, especially with the Duramax diesel, but rust remains a significant threat. Weaknesses over time often manifest as worn suspension components, deteriorating rubber parts, and electrical gremlins. Properly maintained models show surprising longevity, though.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Entertainment features were limited to audio options. Driver-assistance features were minimal, primarily consisting of ABS and daytime running lights. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring.
Safety features included standard airbags, seatbelts, and antilock brakes. Optional features included fog lamps. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be researched independently as ratings may vary depending on the specific cab configuration and testing methodology. The focus for safety was on structural integrity and basic occupant protection.
Compared to today's vehicles, the 2004 Silverado 3500 lacks many of the technological advancements we now take for granted. However, it still provided a solid, reliable platform for work and transportation.

How Does the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?
Reliability is a key differentiator. While all three trucks have their issues, the Silverado is generally considered to be about average in reliability for its class. The Ford Super Duty trucks often get a higher reputation for being easier to repair with greater parts availability. The Dodge Ram models from this era had varying reliability records.
Price-wise, they were fairly competitive when new, and used prices reflect condition and engine type. As alternatives, if reliability and ease of repair are paramount, the Ford F-350 of the same era is a viable option. The Dodge Ram 3500 offers similar capabilities, but research specific model year issues beforehand. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities. Test driving and inspecting each truck is crucial.
