Rating: 4.29
Based on 58 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pickup truck, known for its versatility and capability. Part of the Colorado's second generation, which began in 2015, it offers a more manageable size than full-size trucks. Body styles include extended cab and crew cab with various bed lengths. Key trims range from the base WT (Work Truck) to the luxurious High Country, with the Z71 and ZR2 appealing to off-road enthusiasts. Pricing generally ranged from the mid $20,000s to the low $40,000s when new. Its diverse engine options and maneuverability make it popular.
The Good

The 2020 Colorado offers a blend of practicality and appeal. Its performance ranges from fuel-efficient to powerful, especially with the V6 or diesel options. Reliability is generally good, and the interior provides decent comfort. The design is modern and rugged, appealing to those seeking a capable and stylish truck. It's a good value, offering capabilities rivaling larger trucks at a lower price point, fulfilling both emotional desires for adventure and practical needs for work.

The Bad

Some weaknesses of the 2020 Colorado include a less refined interior compared to some rivals, particularly in lower trims. The base engine can feel underpowered for some tasks. The automatic transmission (specifically the 8-speed) has had reported issues with rough shifting. Some owners report electrical glitches and premature paint chipping. Potential buyers should thoroughly inspect the transmission and check for any unusual noises or vibrations during a test drive.

What Problems Does the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado often revolve around the 8-speed automatic transmission (8L45/8L90). Owners have described rough or delayed shifting, shuddering, and clunking noises. While GM issued technical service bulletins (TSBs) to address these issues with fluid changes and software updates, the problem hasn't been completely eliminated for all owners.
Other common issues include electrical problems such as infotainment system glitches, sensor malfunctions, and issues with the HVAC system. Some owners have reported premature paint chipping, particularly on the hood and leading edges.
Recalls for the 2020 Colorado have included issues related to improperly installed airbags and potential fuel pump failures. Long-term reliability concerns mainly center around the transmission's longevity and the potential for ongoing electrical problems. While not all vehicles experience these issues, the prevalence of complaints warrants careful inspection and consideration when purchasing a used 2020 Colorado. Checking service records for transmission repairs and addressing any outstanding recalls is highly recommended. Some earlier model years (2015-2017) also experienced similar transmission issues, so researching the history of the specific vehicle you are considering is crucial.

How long will the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado last?

With regular maintenance, a 2020 Chevrolet Colorado can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years. Proper maintenance, including timely oil changes, transmission fluid services, and cooling system flushes, is crucial. Long-term durability can be affected by the aforementioned transmission issues; addressing these early can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan. Weaknesses often appear in the electrical system as vehicles age, so preventative maintenance and prompt repairs are important. Trucks used heavily for towing or off-roading may experience more wear and tear, potentially shortening their lifespan.
Positive Owner Reviews
Kevin
Great quad cab truck rides smooth extra quiet cab powerful diesel engine Duramax something Toyota does not offer. the truck is spacious designed well and seems well built.
Abermp
I bought a 2020 WT Crew Cab with power amenities and chrome/color bumpers and upgraded to leather seats for $24,000. It has been a great truck. I regularly get 24-28 mpg with the V6 (simply by watching acceleration). It does everything I want; towing/hauling and just general running about. Love the Apple CarPlay. This is the best value truck that I have owned. Solidly reliable. No complaints.
Marcus
My ideal work truck. No wasted room in this vehicle. It has a 6 foot long bed and enough room behind the front seat for my golf clubs. The v6 engine is Reliable and Spunky. I have wanted an Orange vehicle and Finally have one in this truck. I am Totally pleased with My purchase.
Negative Owner Reviews
Chevy sucks
Garbage. Not impressed. 47000 for a zr2? Shifts terribly. Could have some power if the transmission wasn't so terrible. 4 door is no bigger than an extended cab. I could go on but hopefully you get the picture.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado offers a decent array of built-in tech and safety features, varying by trim level. The standard infotainment system includes a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity. Higher trims feature an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Optional features include a Bose premium audio system and navigation.
Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to some competitors. Available features include:
  • Rear vision camera (standard)
  • Rear park assist (optional)
  • Forward collision alert (optional)
  • Lane departure warning (optional)
Standard safety features include:
  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system
  • Traction control

Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) generally show good performance, with overall ratings typically in the 4-star range. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) ratings vary, with some good ratings but also marginal or acceptable ratings in certain crash tests. The specific ratings can depend on the cab configuration (extended cab vs. crew cab). Overall the Colorado provides a reasonable level of safety and technology for its class, although it lags behind some rivals in terms of advanced driver-assistance systems.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado had a price range from around $22,000 for the base WT trim to over $40,000 for a fully loaded High Country or ZR2. Current used market prices typically range from the high teens to the low $30,000s, depending on trim, mileage, condition, and location. Depreciation is fairly typical for the segment. Factors affecting resale value include trim level (Z71 and ZR2 hold their value well), engine (diesel models are desirable), and overall condition. Low mileage and a clean vehicle history report can command a premium. The truck's history of transmission issues may negatively impact resale for some buyers.

2020 Chevrolet Colorado Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2020 Colorado are generally moderate, similar to other mid-size trucks. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine chosen, with the diesel offering the best highway fuel economy. Maintenance costs are average, but potential transmission repairs can be costly. Regular servicing is essential to prevent major issues. Repair costs can be higher than some competitors due to the complexity of certain components. Overall, the Colorado isn't overly expensive to own, but potential transmission problems can increase long-term costs. The four-cylinder is the most economical to own.

How Does the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Compare to Other Truck?

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado competes with the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Nissan Frontier. Compared to the Tacoma, the Colorado offers a slightly more comfortable ride and a more modern infotainment system. The Tacoma, however, has a stronger reputation for long-term reliability. The Ford Ranger generally provides better fuel economy and a more refined interior. The Nissan Frontier, although significantly updated since 2020, was the oldest design and often the most affordable.
In terms of performance, the Colorado's V6 and diesel engine options are competitive. The ZR2 trim offers superior off-road capability compared to most rivals, except maybe the Tacoma TRD Pro. Feature-wise, the Colorado is generally comparable.
If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Tacoma is a better choice. If you value a more refined driving experience and better fuel economy, the Ford Ranger is a strong contender. The Honda Ridgeline offers a more comfortable ride and better on-road handling but sacrifices some truck capability. The Jeep Gladiator, if within budget, provides excellent off-road capability and open-air driving. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual needs and priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado a Good Truck?

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado is a solid choice for buyers needing a capable mid-size truck with a variety of engine options and trim levels. It's ideal for those who want a truck that's easier to maneuver than a full-size model but still offers good towing and hauling capabilities.
Whether it's worth buying depends on the individual vehicle's history and condition. A used Colorado is generally a good value, but thorough inspection is crucial, especially regarding the transmission. Consider a Z71 or ZR2 for off-road enthusiasts or an LT or High Country for a more comfortable daily driver. A well-maintained diesel model can be a great option for those needing maximum towing capacity and improved fuel economy. Carefully weigh the potential risks of transmission issues against the truck's overall value and capabilities before making a purchase.

Paint is M&M shell thin.

Paint is M&M shell thin. Chips if you stare at too long. Transmissions from 2015 to 2022 are hand grenades waiting to go off. Two class action law suits as GM refuses to acknowledge that sold absolute garbage for years. Here is to them losing. Solenoids go out all the time and they were on national back order. Of the bloc. To lock thr rear axle goes out, you cannot buy one. They discontinued it. If you have a ZR2 the shocks cannot be rebuilt. DO NOT BUY THIS TRUCK.

Not a good value and over priced....

This truck came with the LT package that is over priced for what you truly get. I put a new bedliner, running boards and topper on the truck to get it the way I wanted, without having to pay the exorbitant price the dealer wanted for the extras...you should not need to buy top of the line to get the extra safety features either that are standard on most imports...

Vibrates at 60 miles an hour

Colorado LT 4x4 is not as good as a full size truck. The interior is made cheaply. the v6 engine has enough power. The 4x4 works Ok. But my complaint is it vibrates at higher speeds and the ride isn’t that great. It’s a bumpy riding truck.. I complained to the dealership about the vibration and ask for warranty work and they said it’s not a warranty problem. I complained to GMC and they didn’t respond when I told them the problem.

PICK UP TRUCK DRIVER on February 21, 2021

NEVER BUY ANOTHER ONE.

In Calgary we had 2 major snow storms so far this winter season. While driving. Snow accumulates on the ground and some snow stays on the rims. This a normal event for all vehicles when it snows. So on BOTH occasions: Snow stuck on the rims and the vehicle sat overnight outside in -15 celsius. The next day I drove the COLORADO speeds of just over 100km/hr The truck began to vibrate in the back of the truck excessively. I was surprised so I slowed down to 70km/hr and vibration stopped I thought there might be ice under the vehicle so I parked the COLORADO In a heated underground parking. The problem was gone. On the Second occasion same vibration. This time, I checked the rims and there was hard snow on the passenger side back rim. I have never had vibrating problems at 100 km/hr except with the 2020 COLORADO. So there’s either a problem with the back rim or the balancing in the back. It’s a new vehicle. It’s not modified in any way. It’s all original. Including the rims and Tires These are my comments and concerns.

Very fun ladies kind of Truck. Just enough!

This truck has just the right amount for me. Enough cabin space for a bigger size person. Has cool technology features. The crew cab is big enough for passengers. The truck bed is just enough for my needs. The exterior is also great. Everything is just enough! I love it. Great on gas mileage for a truck.
