The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a long history of blending luxury and off-road capability. The 2022 Grand Cherokee L is the extended, three-row version of the fifth-generation Grand Cherokee, introduced in 2021. It's a mid-size SUV. Key trims include Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve. Pricing ranges roughly from $40,000 to $70,000. It stands out due to its luxurious interior, spacious cabin, and Jeep's renowned 4x4 systems, making it popular with families needing extra space and off-road readiness.
The Good

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers a compelling blend of performance with available V8 power and capable 4x4 systems. Its luxurious and spacious interior provides exceptional comfort. The updated design is both modern and rugged. For practical buyers, it offers ample cargo space and family-friendly features. Emotionally, it provides the prestige of the Jeep brand and the thrill of off-road adventure.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L include fuel economy, particularly with the V8 engine. Some owners have reported electronic glitches and issues with the infotainment system. Reliability, while improved, is still not top-tier compared to some competitors. The higher trims can be quite expensive, impacting value for some buyers. Be aware of potential issues with the air suspension system.

What Problems Does the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L often revolve around the infotainment system. Users have cited issues such as freezing screens, connectivity problems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and software glitches. Some owners have also reported issues with the air suspension system, particularly in Overland and Summit trims; this can manifest as the vehicle failing to adjust ride height or experiencing complete system failure.

Another area of concern involves electronic components in general, with some reports of sensor malfunctions and warning lights appearing intermittently. Some recalls have been issued, often related to software issues affecting safety features or potential problems with the fuel system.

Long-term reliability is still being assessed, but some early indicators suggest that while the build quality is improved compared to previous generations, it still lags behind some competitors in terms of overall dependability. Potential buyers should research specific recalls and technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to the 2022 model year. Pre-purchase inspections by qualified mechanics are advisable to identify any existing or potential problems. It's important to monitor owner forums and resources for updated information regarding common issues and solutions.

How long will the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L last?

With proper maintenance, a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L should provide approximately 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Key to longevity is adhering to the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and inspections. Long-term durability concerns center around the air suspension system, which can be prone to failure with age, and potential electrical issues. The powertrain itself is generally robust, but neglecting maintenance can lead to premature wear. Owners who prioritize preventative maintenance will likely experience fewer problems and a longer lifespan for their vehicle. Rust can be an issue in colder climates where road salt is used.

Great SUV with 3rd row seats and captains chairs in the middle. It drives so smooth for being a larger SUV. Surprisingly it has been great on gas for me. The exterior is so sleek and looks incredibly high end. The interior is true comfort and the Jeep brand has definitely thought of everything. This has been my favorite Jeep by far.
Van
Purchased a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Overland model. Has every option but the 5.8L engine, tow package and second row displays (entertainment, etc). There is so much I like about this Jeep and only one thing that is niggling (well maybe two). Fit,Finish,Quality is hard to surpass! Especially for the price ($69K). My son and daughter in-law drive Audi and BMW SUVs and they don't have all the options I have and they paid more. The Overland is a good value as you get standard some almost all the options. I LOVE the air suspension and how it will lift the body up depending on what mode you are in (and you can set manually the height) and then lowers to enable you to enter/exit the Jeep. I LOVE the "thermo vision". You can see up to 238 feet (according to the Jeep) and anything giving off heat will display on your driver console. Heavy rain, night driving, driving in fog, etc is no issue as you can see what is ahead of you if you can't see it through the windshield. All cars should have this. I LOVE the Heads Up display (again something that should be standard on all cars). I LOVE the front passenger display that is above the glove box. I especially love the NAV option where my wife can be looking at the same NAV I am seeing on the driver console and/or 10.5" center display. She can look for places (gas stations, places to eat, etc) and then send it to my NAV display with the routing. COOL! What I am not enamored with is the MPG. Averaging 23 MPG (town/highway/freeway traveling), BUT knew this going into getting the "L" with the V6 engine. THIS IS A LARGE Jeep! But, if I could not afford the gas prices (even now) I wouldn't bought it to begin with so....the other thing (which will be covered by warranty when I take it in for the first oil change) is that a couple of "buttons" on the center console display act "wonky" sometimes...like hit the Media button and nothing, hit is again and it says "Media button selected" and then hit it again to bring up the Media display (finally). It is the on "button" on the center console 10.5" display that acts up like this....oh, the Assist button in the overhead is not working right. Push it, center console display brings up the Roadside Assistant, Vehicle Check and another one I forget right now...you are suppose to select one of them and it calls a person up (sort of like ONSTAR but Jeep calls it Jeep Assist). Doesn't work (the SOS button does...don't ask me how I know.....). HOWEVER, you can select the Jeep Assist button on your 10.5" display and it brings up the Jeep Assist buttons and they work (will dial). Jeep Technical Service doesn't know why so will be a dealer resolution. There is so much more I can talk about on this Jeep. I love the ride! Can't say how much better than our 2016 Jeep Cherokee we had (traded it in). Jeep could get away with calling it a Jeep Gran Comfort vice Grand Cherokee. You have to go see one before you go look at BMW, AUDI, CADILLAC, TOYOTO, etc. Might change. your mind about what a Jeep can be (plus you get excellent off road mud/sand/snow/rock options with the 4x4.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L boasts a comprehensive suite of technology and safety features. Standard tech includes an 8.4-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims offer a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, and a premium McIntosh audio system.

Driver-assistance features are abundant, with standard equipment including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional features include a night vision camera, a head-up display, and a surround-view camera system.

Safety features are robust, including multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and traction control. The Grand Cherokee L also offers available features like drowsy driver detection and traffic sign recognition.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS are generally favorable, although it's important to check the latest ratings for the 2022 model year specifically. Overall, the 2022 Grand Cherokee L is well-equipped with both standard and optional tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L ranged from approximately $40,000 for the base Laredo trim to over $70,000 for the top-tier Summit Reserve. Current used market prices vary depending on mileage, condition, and trim level, but typically range from $35,000 to $60,000. Depreciation is moderate, but higher trims tend to depreciate more due to their higher initial cost. Factors affecting resale value include condition, mileage, maintenance history, and the presence of popular options like 4x4 and premium audio systems. Lower mileage and a clean Carfax report will command higher prices.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Cost of Ownership

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is moderately costly to own. Insurance rates are typical for its class. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V8 engine. Maintenance costs are average, but potential repairs, particularly related to the air suspension or electronics, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs are influenced by driving habits and maintenance diligence. It is not particularly economical, especially compared to hybrid or smaller SUV options. Budgeting for potential repairs is wise.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Insurance

Insurance for a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L competes with vehicles like the Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade. In terms of performance, the Grand Cherokee L offers stronger off-road capabilities than most rivals, especially with its 4x4 systems and available V8 engine. Feature-wise, it matches or exceeds many competitors, particularly in higher trims with luxurious appointments and advanced technology.

However, reliability is an area where the Grand Cherokee L lags behind the Toyota Highlander and Kia Telluride, which have consistently higher reliability ratings. The Ford Explorer offers a similar blend of performance and features but also suffers from reliability concerns. The Hyundai Palisade provides excellent value and a comfortable interior, making it a strong contender.

In terms of price, the Grand Cherokee L is generally competitive, though higher trims can become expensive quickly. Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Highlander for reliability, the Kia Telluride for overall value, and the Hyundai Palisade for a comfortable and well-equipped family SUV. If off-road capability is a priority, the Grand Cherokee L remains a strong choice, but buyers should be aware of potential reliability concerns compared to some rivals.

Ranks #1160 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is ideal for families needing three-row seating and those who value off-road capability or a luxurious interior. It's worth buying if you prioritize these aspects and are willing to accept potentially lower reliability compared to some competitors. A used model can offer good value, but a thorough inspection is crucial. Consider the Limited or Overland trims for a good balance of features and price. Evaluate your needs carefully; if off-roading isn't a priority, more reliable alternatives might be a better choice. New might be preferred if advanced safety tech is a must-have.

BUYER BEWARE

We LOVE the fam cam, in fact it's the only reason we have kept the vehicle, now that our little one is getting older this thing has got to go! It's has been in the shop more than it has been on the road for very simple yet annoying issues, especially for having owned since mile 1. We have no intentions of getting another jeep anywhere in the near future. The look is aggressive but don't be fooled by the devil in the blue dress.

Good sturdy SUV

Great car so far. Still learning drivability. Tinted driver's windows reflect light from dashboard which interferes with side mirror and external view, to the extent that window has to be rolled down to be able to see side mirror.

Cannot use for towing due to parts issues!

This vehicle cannot be used for towing as the Jeep electrical harness does not work! We had a tow hitch installed and had to wait for the electrical harness to come in. After two attempts the dealer reported that Jeep could not provide a part that works. We did take the boat to the lake anyway and the Jeep does a fine job of towing. The back up system drives you crazy while going down the boat ramp however as the safety feature constantly brakes when it "sees" the boat and trailer. Until the vehicle and the boat are aligned the car will drive you crazy braking and even applying the parking brake for you! Thanks but no thanks! Sold this vehicle and bought a truck to get the job done safely and smoothly.

Big improvement on previous model year!

Great improvement on previous model. Third row seat is terrific. Off road capable with luxury throughout. Big tech improvement over previous model with upgraded infotainment and digital display. Impressed with V6 given its capabilities & minimal noise in the cabin.

Drive several before you buy

Interior road noise is excessive compared to my 22 F-150 Crew Cab. I measured 74 db while crusing at 72 MPH with a peak of 84 db under acceleration. Fuel mileage for a V6 is awful and the engine is massively under powered. Only has 5k miles on it and it has spent a total of 5 days in the shop for issues with radio and instrument cluster screen going blank on multiple occasions. Was told the road noise was due to over inflated tires. Tires were set to correct pressure and road noise had not changed at all. Auxiliary battery had a bad cell and had to be replaced as well. Worst vehicle purchase I have ever made and will be trading as soon as possible. The vehicle looks great inside and out but I cannot recommend this generation of Grand Cherokee due to constant issues and excessive noise. I don't want tinnitus just from driving to the office.

Get the v8 or pass

I love the off-road capabilities of my GC L overland. Love the look and features. With that being said, I am highly disappointed in the performance and under powering of the v6. This Jeep is rated to tow 6,200lbs with the v6. That is probably true if you are going downhill. My boat weighs 3,500 plus 500 of gear so a total of 4,000lbs. Acceleration while towing is redlining every time, going up a hill will put me at a max of 50mph and struggling. This all equates to about 11mpgs towing my 4K boat and a lot of shifting. I am sure with the v8 it would be a breeze. I cannot recommend this vehicle if it is the v6 version because even when not towing it sucks.
