Rating: 4.68
Based on 12 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is a high-performance sports car born from Mercedes-AMG's racing heritage. Available as a coupe or roadster, it boasts striking aesthetics and thrilling performance. Model years span from 2015 onwards, with key trims including the base GT, GT S, GT C, and the powerful GT R. Pricing for a new 2018 model ranged approximately from $115,000 to over $160,000, depending on the trim and options. Its hand-built engine and distinctive long-hood, short-deck proportions make it a desirable choice for enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2018 AMG GT offers exhilarating performance and a stunning design, appealing to the emotionally driven buyer. It also provides a surprisingly comfortable ride for a sports car, relatively good fuel efficiency for its class, and the prestige of the Mercedes-Benz brand, catering to practical considerations. While not cheap, its performance justifies the price for many.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2018 AMG GT include limited rear visibility, especially in the coupe. The infotainment system, while luxurious, can be less intuitive than some competitors. Some owners have reported minor electrical glitches. Also, the rear tires tend to wear quickly due to the car's power and handling. Be mindful of regular servicing costs, which can be high.

What Problems Does the 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT are relatively minor compared to some other high-performance vehicles, but potential buyers should be aware. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including glitches and slow response times. Electrical gremlins, such as sensor malfunctions and issues with the adaptive suspension, have also been noted, although not widespread. Another common concern involves premature tire wear, particularly on the rear tires, due to the car's powerful engine and sporty handling characteristics. While the 2018 model year itself doesn't have a disproportionate number of recalls compared to other years, it's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls related to safety or emissions. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the complexity of the twin-turbo V8 engine and its associated components. Regular and meticulous maintenance is essential to prevent potential issues down the line. Some owners have mentioned concerns about the longevity of the transmission under sustained high-performance driving. Overall, the AMG GT is generally reliable, but as a high-performance car, it demands careful attention and proactive maintenance to ensure its long-term health and performance.

How long will the 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT last?

Based on owner data and maintenance habits, a well-maintained 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT can realistically provide 150,000 miles or 10+ years of service. However, proper maintenance is crucial. Long-term durability hinges on regular oil changes, adherence to service schedules, and addressing any minor issues promptly. Potential weaknesses over time include the turbochargers, which may require replacement with high mileage. The suspension components, especially the adaptive dampers, can also wear out. The infotainment system might become outdated compared to newer technologies, but this doesn't necessarily impact reliability. Preventing performance degradation is key to achieving longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT boasts a range of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The standard COMAND infotainment system features an 8.4-inch display, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. The Burmester surround sound system provides exceptional audio quality.
Driver-assistance features include a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, and collision prevention assist plus. Adaptive cruise control was available as an option.
Safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, and traction control. Optional safety features included lane departure warning and pre-safe brake.
While the AMG GT prioritizes performance, it still offers a decent suite of technology features for its time.
As for crash-test ratings, the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) typically do not crash test low-volume sports cars like the AMG GT. Therefore, official crash-test ratings are generally unavailable. However, the car is built with high-strength steel and incorporates numerous safety technologies to protect occupants in the event of a collision. The focus is more on active safety features designed to prevent accidents in the first place.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT ranged from approximately $115,000 to over $160,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and trim level, typically ranging from $70,000 to $110,000. The AMG GT depreciates at a moderate rate, influenced by factors such as mileage, condition, service history, and the presence of desirable options. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices. Limited-edition models, such as the GT R, tend to hold their value better than the base models. The overall market demand for high-performance sports cars also affects resale value.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is generally a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are high due to its performance capabilities and value. Fuel costs are considerable, given its relatively low fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs are also above average, as it requires specialized service and parts. Long-term ownership costs can be significant, especially if major repairs are needed. It's not an economical vehicle; it's designed for performance and luxury, which come at a premium.

This is level up from 911 Turbo and Nissan GTR

I have had weekend cars for some years now. Started with BMW M3 (E46 competition package), moved to Porsche 911 turbo (997.1 with 6-sp), then 2015 Nissan GTR (I truly enjoyed that car) and I am on the 2018 MB AMG GTR now. I drive them only during late Spring, Summer and store them from October to April. I keep them for 2-4 summers, then move on. MB AMG GTR is the next level. It is starting to encroach into exotic car territory. Lots of attention. It is a race focused machine and by far the most uncomfortable sport car I have owned so far. But that is a good thing. Engine is at the moment one of the best in the business. Sounds awesome. It is a tricky car to drive fast so one has to be a bit more careful when compared to Nissan GTR/Porsche 911 turbo or even Porsche 911 GT3. I had a rear light failure within the first 4k miles. Fixed under warranty. Entertainment system is a bit old. In general I would say this car is worth the money.

2018 Mercedes AMG GTC

The 2018 Mercedes AMG GTC is an amazing weekend cruiser. It is basically a German Dodge Viper with the long low hood and scary speed. The quality of the interior is superb with luxury leather everywhere. Mine had an MSRP of 190k. It is comfortable enough to drive around town and go on long trips. It feels refined and is very smooth. It is a little wide for small alleys though. The suspension is in between a sports car and a grand tourer. It is great for me on the weekends with the top down and I already have 13,000 miles on it.

Mercedes GTS

Great Car, fun to drive. Will give you the wow factor.. Not the fastest car out there, but gives you the sports car feeling. Will buy another one.. Owned almost every AMG, and this was one the best. This is much more fun than the AMG c63s Edition One I sold to buy this car.
